Another Law Targets Saggy Pants

July 22nd, 2008

The latest penalties include a $25 fine and even jail time

Saggy Pants
The crusade against sagging continues as the Chicago suburb of Lynwood has become the latest community to slap a fine on young folks who think it’s hip to show their underwear in public. Eugene Williams, mayor of Lynwood, led the campaign to impose $25 fines against anyone who reveals three inches or more of their drawers. But Lynwood’s new law isn’t the first of its kind. Just a week or so ago, Flint, Mich., showing its utter disdain for the fashion trend, says it will throw offenders in jail. Leading that city’s crusade is the new chief of police, David Dicks, who calls sagging “immoral self-expression,” reports Mary Chapman and Jessica Bennett of Newsweek magazine Their article suggests that Dicks, like officials in other cities with anti-sagging laws, are at least partially angered over the roots of the hip-hop clothing trend – prison, where inmates’ pants often hang off their butts because they don’t get belts. To find out other reasons mentioned and what the NAAPC had to say, go to BETlcom/News. What do you think about laws targeting saggy pants?

Another excuse to throw innocent black men in jail. There are more things important than baggy pants that plague the poor black neighborhoods that need to be solved.

UMLAW:

I am a Christian and I strongly believe in GOD. If you want to worship the sun then you worship the sun and I will pray for you. I worship JESUS CHRIST, MY LORD AND SAVIOR!!! Not because I lack anything better but because he has revealed himself to me and I have a personal relationship with him. He is the center of my life. I don’t disrespect anyone else’s spirituality or religion but I know where my help comes from!!! As a child of GOD I am compelled to rebuke anything that demeans my GOD. This is not science, astronomy, evolution or any of your other theories. THIS IS SPIRITUAL AND BASED UPON FAITH AND REVELATION!!!

You have a right to your beliefs and I have a right to mine, I will not debate my faith with you (or anyone else) and I CAN NOT be moved by anything you say!!!

HAVE A BLESSED DAY!!! (I know that I will)

Sagging originated in jails. Some male inmates sagged to show that they were taken by another male. I can understand why some people don’t agree with the negivite image that comes with this cultural trend. At the same time, I’m a young person I believe that you should be free to express yourself through clothing. We have a law against nudity. I think it’s going a little too far with sagging. This is America the free country. It seems like the government has more power then the people. Someone needs to speak up. Fight for you rights!

i’m gonna pray for your soul sense you don’t have enough sense to pray for yourself. i’m gonna ask god to forgive you for the ignorance of your words because you truly don’t know any better. you and the rest of the atheist on this blog will be in my prayers. god is god whether you acknowledge him or not. that’s the good thing about him; even the nonbelievers can be saved. for you are definitely hell bound and hell is way hotter than your sun!!!

I have to say that I do not enjoy seeing these young boys and grown men’s underware and doo doo stains hanging out, but I don’t think you should be jailed or fined for it. It is a fashion statement that was started in the 90’s and never went away (I wish it would). What we need to do is teach our kids that this is not cool, it is not a fashion statement and that no one wants to see your nasty drawls. We need to let them know that they can by bigger jeans for comfort and wear a belt all in the same turn. Most boys and men buy the jeans big because they are comfortable and they don’t hug in areas they don’t want. But they forget that a belt needs and must be worn with them. I honestly believe that if this is the only thing that these idiots are concerned about there are more people leaving in a bubble with blinders on than I thought. There are more things in this country and world to be concerned about besides saggy pants. Get over it.

Every state copying another state, and stealing their ideas. If they really want to stop the pants sagging, why they cant talk to them their selves and see where they are coming from? I not saying

I agree with you DJTONYLOVE.
Yuck! I hate sagging. In my 26 years of living, I can honestly say that sagging has NEVER made me swoon over any man. I mean it’s disgusting to go to the mall and see some silly young person with their drawers showing. That is NOT cute. Fines, jail time, whatever needs to be done to get these people to stop is cool with me. Now a young person will spend $60-75 on a pair of jeans and won’t pay $10 for a belt. Come on. That’s crazy. Try TJMaxx, Marshall’s, Ross, anything. They come cheap at those stores, so there is NO excuse for your pants, which are already 3 sizes to big, not to be held up with some cowhide. I mean a person can wear baggy pants and not sag. I prefer it that way. Sagging is an old trend anyway. Let it go people! It’s time to move on and grow up. Get a clue!

Hmmm…
We have implemented laws…to remove “time for prayer ” from schools…( everyone but atheists pray…mono-theistic or not …for -the-record)and laws to allow abortion …even heinous partial-birth abortion…we have supported the porn industry…as well as lowered our standard of allowed language and subject matter on “prime-time” t.v. and radio and support same sex marriage… to name a few of our legislative efforts.

YET …
we want to support laws incarcerating folks over boxer shorts showing…?

I for one concur …it looks and is ridiculous…and watching one of those cats try to run…while rocking that style…is hilarious….But it did come from prison with definite homosexual purpose…as others in the inustry confirm.

it hurts my spirit to see men…particularly young black men ….emulate the criminals…the average racist -white americans see them destined to be.!!!

I don’t see any laws prohibiting women from wearing shorts low enough to nearly expose their $?@~% hair….or short enough to show their butt cheeks….or…tops that leave 3/4 of their breasts out !Never min women walkin’ aroun with their thongs showing all the time.
WHAT’s up with that ?

I hate the sagg look…it is very unflattering as well …makes even guys with great builds look dumpy or extra -skinny ( the straight-leg jeans make ‘em look even worse.and wearing shorts sagged make ‘em look deformed …I hate watchin them ride bikes around with their butts up in the air…drawers all-out.

With all that being said…. I see it as an attack on minority youth…as much as I hate it…they are dead wrong .

Blessssssssss

No one should go to jail for baggy pants , but should be fined.

First of all, the people talking about the sagging pants coming from Prags in prison is true. Secondly, we need to worry about educating our youth more than their ability to sag or not sag.

As a community, we have so many issues at hand that it is ridiculous. Are crime rate is still way too high, which leads to our prison rates being out of control. How many single Black mothers are taking care of 1, 2, 3, 4 or more babies, and how many of them are fathered by multiple males (men is used for a man, not somebody that got a woman pregnant).

Our forefathers fought and died (Mostly horrible deaths) to gain so many of the freedoms that we take for granted today. We allow the TV to raise our children and teach them what is cool, and how to think. Let’s take responsibility for our youth, and start being a community again.

I have read some of your comments, and I can tell you that some of them are bull for various reasons. Don’t think that they are trying to run you out because of a sagging law. How about the fact that people just don’t want to see your daws. Also, how can somebody’s child sag without showing their draws. Physically impossible I would say.

I have an idea, and if you agree, try it out. The next time you are about to do something. Talk to a female, buy clothes, decide where to shop. Think for one moment what our forefathers and foremothers gave up so that you have the right to make that decision. Then, try and make the decision that would make them proud that they gave their life in a unbelievable struggle.

Trust me, we were not always a people about fancy cars, bling bling, or any of those bull stereotypes you hear about. We were a people about community, family, education, and improvement. The media has taken that fight out of us.

One last thing, the next time you hear a person that is not African-American say the :N” word (any variation), sock them in their mouth, and then lets stop using that word ourselves.

Dwayana Said on

LMAO!!!!!!!…….. OK LET’S GET DOWN TO BUSINESS ARE YOU REALLY UPSET ABOUT OUR YOUTH TODAY THAT YOU WILL TRY ANYTHING TO ABOLISH OUR WAYS AND HOW WE EXPRESS OUR DIVERSITY. THIS TO ME MAKES NO SENSE BECAUSE AMERICA IS A VERY INDEPEDANT STATE AND IS OPEN TO EVERYBODY PERSAY. THIS LAW IS CRAZY TALK AND FOR YOU TO AGREE MEANS YOU DON’T HAVE THE RIGHT TO SPEAK OUT FOR YOURSELF. I MEAN IF WE SEEN HINDU’S WALKING AROUN WITH THEIR WRAPS ON SHOULD THEY TAKE THEM OFF?? IT ALL FALLS IN THATCATEGORY THE WHIT MAN CAN’T STAND UNITY WITH OUT IT BEING CONTROLLED IN HIS LAW OR WAY. I SAY DO WHAT YOU DO CUZ IN THE BAY WE GO STUPID MAN WITH THE MIDDLE FINGER IN THE AIR SAYING @~$@ ALL THE HATERS….

toya Said on

how is it that the united states goes by the right of free speech, the right of privacy, free press, guns, etc but when it comes to the rights of our own and what we chose to do with our bodies, is now getting taken away. Everyone knows that the african american community is being targeted by this, because we are the most common people that “choose” to dress a certain way. no one is targeting white communities when there parents allow them to leave the house dressing in all black which signifies hatred and the devil!!!!! theres no laws telling women that going out to the clubs half naked with there titties out, ass out, and stomach out is against the law….so how is it, that these states are coming up with laws pertaining to saggy pants….theres a lot more things that our tax paying money should go to, such as ending the ?@$*#* war, poverty and education….and stop blaming everything and anything on HIP HOP and raise your own damn children.

Watts 2000 Said on

And UMLAW who do you think created the sun. I am praying for your soul. Back to the subject. If we as a people talk to our kids more about sagging and what it actually represents then maybe our kids wouldn’t do it. Learning how to respect yourself starts at home….

Monique Said on

So you mean to tell me, you people like to see men and boys walking around with their pants off their behind and I mean that literally. Actually tying a belt around their THIGHS, so that the pants can be under the behind? You all think that is cute? You honestly don’t think it’s time to GROW UP? You all keep saying that there are other things more pressing to concentrate on, but you keep forgetting that even the small things are a part of the big picture. It’s called RESPECT for yourself and others. You don’t see Obama with his pants sagging, nor any other powerful, influential black man. So why are we accepting this as yet another OK thing. C’mon people, we are so much more than this. Men/Boys PULL UP YOUR PANTS!

Rana Said on

I agree with D July 22 statement (see above) shouldn’t the law be dealing with more pressing issues~ like ‘crime’! folks should able to wear what they want to wear…period. To each his own this is a FREE country isn’t it???

JENNIFER Said on

THOUGH SAGGING PANTS SHOWS A LACK OF CONFIDENCE AND SELF-DISRESPECT, YOU CAN NOT USE THOSE ISSUES IN LAW. THAT IS UNCONSTITUTIONAL AND ALSO UNRATIONAL. WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO, THROW ALL THE YOUNG MEN WHO CHOOSE TO SHOW THEIR UNDERWEAR?!THATS ABSURD

Stephanie Said on

I DONT THINK THE BAND AGAINST SAGGING IS RIGHT, BECAUSE THATS VIOLATING OUR RIGHTS AS YOUNG PEOPLE IF I WAS A BLACK MALE AND I GOT FINED OR SENT TO JAIL OVER THIS DUMB MATTER I WOULD HIRE A LAWYER AND FIGHT IT BECAUSE ITS JUST UNCONSTITIONAL I MEAN PEOPLE CANT TELL U HOW TO DRESS AS LONG AS U HAVE SOME CLOTHES ON WHO CARES

Erica Said on

I agree with this new law no matter your race, gender creed whatever I don’t want to see your underwear no nasty dirty draws or nasty dirty thongs it should apply to females as well. Yeah just have some decency cover yourself up!

Monique Said on

It’s so sad that we hide behind this constitution to say, “it’s our right, it’s violating our rights!” Well, that’s why we have laws; to help control people when it seems like they can’t control and regulate themselves! When do you as a man/boy say, “Ok, this was a fad. Let me now wear my pants like it was intended?” You don’t and that is why the laws are made and generally by white men. For those who keep hollering and hiding behind the constitution; the passing and signing of the Patriot Act, took away your Constitutional Rights. Read about it! Be responsible for yourself and wear your pants as they were intended, because if you don’t the law will make you and I’m 100% for it!
