Another Law Targets Saggy Pants
July 22nd, 2008The latest penalties include a $25 fine and even jail time

The crusade against sagging continues as the Chicago suburb of Lynwood has become the latest community to slap a fine on young folks who think it’s hip to show their underwear in public. Eugene Williams, mayor of Lynwood, led the campaign to impose $25 fines against anyone who reveals three inches or more of their drawers. But Lynwood’s new law isn’t the first of its kind. Just a week or so ago, Flint, Mich., showing its utter disdain for the fashion trend, says it will throw offenders in jail. Leading that city’s crusade is the new chief of police, David Dicks, who calls sagging “immoral self-expression,” reports Mary Chapman and Jessica Bennett of Newsweek magazine Their article suggests that Dicks, like officials in other cities with anti-sagging laws, are at least partially angered over the roots of the hip-hop clothing trend – prison, where inmates’ pants often hang off their butts because they don’t get belts. To find out other reasons mentioned and what the NAAPC had to say, go to BETlcom/News. What do you think about laws targeting saggy pants?

@Stephanie, that’s the point; you DON’T have clothes on, they’re hangin’ off your ass. And as a young woman, I would hope that you expect more than than out of a young man. But now, women settle for so much less. *smdh*
I TOTALLY DISAGREE WITH THE FINE & JAIL TIME. THE GOTHIC KIDS DON’T GET FINED OR JAIL TIME. BUT IT JUST GOES TO SHOW THEY DO ANYTHING TO LOCK US UP & CONTORL US. I HAVE A 12 YR OLD SON’T HE DOESN’T SAGG. BUT HE WEARS HIS PANTS A SIZE BIGGER & HE WEAR A BELT HE LIKES THE BAGGY LOOK . SO I GUESS THEY BE GIVING THEM FINES & JAIL TIME NEXT?
Seschris:
I will respond to you again when the statement was not made towards you. I respect your faith, as i do with anyone else’s faith. I am just writing what i believe in. i went to church for many years, and i even attended catholic school. Upon studying science, the universe, and the many contradictions between Church and science, i made my own designation on religion. I just don’t like the fact that so many on here and many other places, try to demean anyone that isn’t a follower (’i'll pray for your soul…you’re going to hell’). That’s the same type of mentality that pushed me from the Church and also the same thought patterns of all of those who killed in order to push their religion on non-believers.
The Bible was written by man…that’s all i know.
For the people that think this is not right. It is not right for some one to show you their behinds. This is the right way to go . Fined them all . I am tired of seeing this. Some of them have their pants near the knees and show where their underwear stops. Half of the time their under wears are not clean. The the girls need to be fine too, wearing low cut pants. When, they walk and bend over, they show their behinds too. I don’ want to see their tongs. They are called under wear, not showing wear
Although I really, really don’t like this sagging “style” I think to *%~$* a law to criminalize it is not the answer, in my opinion. Ideally, (if the young men are not adults) the objections should come from the parents/parent (but I realize not all parents care or have a problem with this). I’m finding that the men sag baggy pants, more form fitting jeans, sweat pants, basketball shorts and athletic pants. I’ve seen them sag everything!
However, schools, theatres, malls, shopping centers and other places that are established for the public can establish a dress code or state what attire is not acceptable in their establishment.
it’s going to be up the family & communities and the larger society to make this code unacceptable. However, when families and communities of these men remain silent or simply don’t care, then it’s taken to the next level…

@Ava, the gothic kids don’t walk around showin’ their ass, I’d rather see them then the guys with their pants around their thighs, underwear showing. No, they won’t be fining your son or putting him in jail because you said your son DOESN’T sag, he just wears his pants a little baggy with a belt. No problem with that.
I do believe that the goverment needs to be worried about more important things than saggy pants. BUT I am glad that they are letting people know that it is NOT RIGHT to have your undewear showing in public. Some people get disgusting with it! And the true story behind saggy pants is from prison; if a prisoner wore his pants below his waist, it was a sign of homosexuality. People who do wear they’re pants so low that other people can see their underwear, need to go up! So yes, I do agree with the new law.
You can’t tell people how to dress that’s just like taking away another part of their freedom rights…. And I do believe that this is another attack at the black community seeing how we are the predominant race that sags their pants. And then to say that you can be thrown in jail for a simple way of dressing that’s really doing way to much… Dressing is a way of expression if your not free to be your self in this world then who can you be. The governmet is trying to shape us into their ideal image it like another form of assimilation except for its not being done to natives its being done to the black culture…
GOOD! It’s ugly, distasteful, stereotypical and utterly disgusting! I am all for the ban on those nasty lookin’ pants. If you wear pants that fit, then you don’t need a belt.
I understand what the states are trying to do, but will it really make an impact on young people? Will it really teach young people to stop wearing their pants below their waist (showing their underwear)? It’s a clothing trend. It’s a style. Are they fining girls who show to much of their chest $25 dollars? Are they throwing women in jail who show their bras or wear those lingere type tops? No. And for everyone who is so eager to agree with this new law, when does it end? If they can slap out laws like this, what do you think they will think of next. You may think that it’s ridiculous to think that they would think of anything else but it can happen. Would you like it if your state told you how you should dress? People always think that when things like this happen it will somehow change how the young adults of this world, but in order to change the young adults you have to change the way they think. That is really where the rubble meets the road. So don’t be so quick to say hooray…the state might just be telling you how you should live your life as a decent citizen next.
This is all bull…
This law is nothing but bull – with the media constantly talking about how America may be nearing (if we ain’t already in it) a recession, various cities around the nation are going to try and pass any and every law imaginable to make money, including ridiculous fines such as this. If you don’t like it, you ain’t gotta STARE at it
On a side note, I personally hate saggy pants – tried once in high school and almost fell. And dudes need to be seriously educated on this – let ‘em know that they rockin’ ~*** wear when they do this. Pull yo *ish up, homey! Don’t nobody wanna see dat!
Another way I suggest to get dudes to stop this is tie their shoelaces together and watch as the fun ensues…but that’s just me…
I personnally don’t like the look, but I don’t think they should be fined $25. The fad of showing their underwear has been around longer then I thought it would be, I remember when I was their age the teenagers, girls and boys wore greased down stiff Levi’s way below their waist and white shirts. Of course their underwear didn’t show, but the Levi’s were down around their hips. It was just a fad.
Its not just one group of boys that wear their pants down, its most teenagers, black, white, mexican, chinese, trying to make a statement, or so it seems. Leave them alone.
I agree with CoCo, if laws are passed with either a fine or jail, what’s next. There are more critical problems that need attention then a persons dress attire.
I have noticed this saggy pants trend slowly making it’s way into the elementary school level of young boys particulary african american boys. I am however saddened and dissappointed with our brothers, who are instant roll models reguardless of their choosing. Even white men are roll models in their communities in the same way. Black men just continue to think that they are Islands. Nothing they do effects anyone but those who choose to be effected due to their own participation. But, everything anyone does wheather white or black effects everyone around. Slavery didnt just effect blacks, it effected whites as well. It was all negetive and the white man still until this day is paying for his crimes. Look at the children in schools now, they come to school looking like they dont know how to dress for school. By wearing our pants down we are saying more of nothing to the white man then we have ever said before. We know its stupid to show our under pants in public. And to make it so bad we are showing our whole ass. Men are walking around like they have a pile of mess in their pants and see nothing wrong with it. Look at us, the white man had to come in once again and tell us whats proper and then make a law so that we would be FORCED into doing something that should come easy to the average HUMAN. It’s disrespectful and rude but again our black men feel that thats YOUR problem. We are forever making silent statements that dont never get heard because of the ignorrance that underlines them. When are we going to just SAY IT in plain english?
I THANK THEM CRACKAS IS IGNORANT AN RACIST AN JELLUS THAT THEY AINT GOT NO FLAVA
I am all for this law and hope other states follow. Personally, I think the fine should be more. Seeing this act in public among civilized people is rather embarrassing.
About time. im happy about this, i feel sorry the guys or girls that saggs, good luck to them. society look down on you. change for once.
Why should I look at someones’ rear end and boxer underwear ? This law should be implemented ASAP. I would not hire people that wear their trousers in that manner to work in my business establishment. If they want to dress in that attire at home…so be it.
Just because it displeases a small part of society doesn’t mean there should be a law against or a fine to it. They might as well slap a fine on showing cleavage in public or wearing a thong up high! How pathetic this is….
What i think is, i really see no problem. It’s a style for young people such as myself. I don’t think everything in the world will be how people would want it to be because, everyone’s not perfect, your not going to like everything you see. Why come every boss i ever had is Caucasian. Look where people come from. The type of lifestyle that they lived sometimes. I’m not saying people who sag lived ruff lifestyles but it’s a trend dat has broadened & it will never go away, no matter how much your grandmother, mom, dad or whoeva dislikes it, it’s always going to be here. I sag, that’s just how i like to wear my jeans and shorts. You really not going to tell a grown ass man to pull his pants up, he mighy listen for a minute. Of course when you go to a job you supposed to go presentable, businees casual as I would say, at your job or interview. People do know when to do that. Let them be them, that’s their style.
