Another Law Targets Saggy Pants

July 22nd, 2008

The latest penalties include a $25 fine and even jail time

Saggy Pants
The crusade against sagging continues as the Chicago suburb of Lynwood has become the latest community to slap a fine on young folks who think it’s hip to show their underwear in public. Eugene Williams, mayor of Lynwood, led the campaign to impose $25 fines against anyone who reveals three inches or more of their drawers. But Lynwood’s new law isn’t the first of its kind. Just a week or so ago, Flint, Mich., showing its utter disdain for the fashion trend, says it will throw offenders in jail. Leading that city’s crusade is the new chief of police, David Dicks, who calls sagging “immoral self-expression,” reports Mary Chapman and Jessica Bennett of Newsweek magazine Their article suggests that Dicks, like officials in other cities with anti-sagging laws, are at least partially angered over the roots of the hip-hop clothing trend – prison, where inmates’ pants often hang off their butts because they don’t get belts. To find out other reasons mentioned and what the NAAPC had to say, go to BETlcom/News. What do you think about laws targeting saggy pants?

Its nasty and disrespectful they dont even have the nerve to pull their pants up around their elders or they get smart when someone says its a shame, Im 22 and its not a turn on nor is it cute!!!!!!!!!!! Come on please get a little class and respect for yourselfs and others, please EVERYBODY!!!!!!

THAT’S WHY THIS IZ AMERICA…. BECAUSE WE HAVE THE FREEDOM of such WONDERFUL Things as Speech, And Self-Expression! The Style isn’t “Tacky” this is a clear attempt to DISCRIMINATE Against a particular class and type of people, OUR YOUTH, Especially OUR Black Youth! I Have seen Many references to Homosexuals And Prison as to this style, However that may have been the case back in the days But…. Now its part of the hip hop culture…. People Should HAVE the Freedom to Do thinsg that DO NOT HARM Others Such as Wearing Saggy Pants, Or Same-Sex Marriage! Really I See a Potential for A “SNOW-BALL Effect” I Mean whats next they will start passing laws as to what color cars you can or can not buy? Thats ridiculous! Just ridiculous That we allow so much infringment on our cival Roght’s! And if no saggy pants is a law so should be wearing skirts that go above the knees or any flesh showing at all, lets just step back into the 50’s we are all about advancement as a people and Look at this what about high-heels they were originally worn by Prostitutes but not its ok to wear them to a job interview or in Everyday life, so then is Every person that wears High-Heels A Prostitute? Is Everybody that wears Saggy Pants A Homosexual? The Answer My Friends…. NO!!!!!!!!! We Are Simply AMERICANS!!!!

Worry whether a man’s pants are sagging is ridiculous. we have children right here in America that could use that $25.00 to get the food they need.
Putting a man in jail for a non-violent crime is a waste of tax payer’s dollars.
I look at it as self expression and a fashion statement. There are more important issues to worry about then sagging jeans. It looks better than the TIGHT fitting jeans men are wearing.

i can see a high school passing dress code, but a community… you’re just asking for more problems. start a crusade over something important. wow, get a life Eugene.

I AGREE 100% WITH KENNY WHTIE Which I Believe is a typo and is WHITE, And as for Dressing for an Interview… EVERYBODY Knows YOU DRESS DIFFERENTLY For that, not Because the way you were dressing originally was wrong but because you have to dress up business-style, just like casual-style, atheletic-style, e.t.c. And Women have been wearing the “LOW-Ridder Jeans That also show there Thongs but I See No such Law passed on that! It’s Pure Racisim! I understand what these communties are trying to tell us, but I don’t think that they should make it against the law or charge a fine. What happened to the United States being a free country??? They shouldn’t tell you what you can and can’t wear. I beleive that what you wear on your OWN time should be your OWN business. Like I said before, I know where they are coming from, what you wear shouldn’t be up to them. I would understand that they don’t want to see your underwear, but so what?!?! DON’T WE HAVE SOME KIND OF FREEDOM OF APPEARANCE??? I think that it’s a waste of our fellow tax payer’s money to put people in jail for nonviolent crimes. The way people choose to express themselves has nothing to do with the person who looks down on them. MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS!!!!! I think that it’s more offense for someone to actually show unnecessary SKIN, rather than fabric…I wish someone would walk up to me and charge me with a fine or throw me in jail because of the clothes I was wearing. We have some many people in Jails that they are having to buil more!!! Why throw someone in there for unnecessary reasons when you could fill their spot with a ~@~?$~, murderer, or something worth taking up space…

I was brought up to think this country was all about freedom..the freedom to be able to express yourslef in any way you want as long as it doesn’t harm the well-beings of others..now how does sagging your pants treaten anyones right..if you find it ovensive than its simple DON”T LOOK..this country is getting worst and worst..it first started with you can’t hold a phone while driving your own car..now to this those America really have nothing better to do there’s millions of crimes such as drugs dealers and sex offenders and health care and all they can pass a law on is sagging pants??? thats seems a bit irrational to me..why don’t they pass a law on them lil white boys who where tight pants or have chains hanging every where or where weak up….i find all of this just to be so dumb the government has nothing better to do..how about this..TRY AND SAVE THE LIFES OF MILLIONS OF BLACK TEENS THAT ARE DYING EVERYDAY..INSTEAD OF WORRIYING ABOUT WHAT THERE WEARING..THANK YOU

If it takes a law to stop this disgusting style, trend, or whatever you want to call it then I’m all for it!!! Where is the sense of pride in our black youth? Where has it gone? What is even more disgusting is seeing 40 year old MEN like Jay-Z and other “old school” rappers and every day men on the street walking around looking like idiots! They not only wear sagging pants in jail because they can’t get belts, it also has a sexual connotation to it too. Why on earth would our young people want to emmulate or glorify such a disgusting trend? Who wants to see somebody’s drawers – boxers or briefs?? Have some dignity about yourselves, especially as young black men! You have so many things going against you as it is: Your skin color, you’re a male, you’re a target by police no matter where you go in this country, you are more than likely not going to live to see the age of 25 or 30, it’s hard for you to get jobs, especially if you have a criminal history, many come from single parent families, and many are the products of babies having babies. Why add to the struggle making yourself look foolish? I went to a McDonald’s one day and just about all the young men who worked there had sagging pants. There is no way on God’s green earth I would allow an employee of mine dress that way on the job, let alone HIRE them! It’s slouchy, it’s uncouth, it’s disgusting, it’s trampy! Where is the self respect? Where is the pride? You can’t go in the corporate world dressed that way. You can’t be taken seriously in the real world looking for a legit career dressed that way. It’s a shame it’s taking a LAW to make us wake up! This should have started in the HOME!!!!

sweetjess Said on

It doesn’t make sense to pass the law!!

people have the right to wear anythig they want!!
wearing saggy pants are kinda fshion and it looks so cool( though some don’t think so) ..not all kind of job should refuse sagging,it depends on what kind of work it is…

however this law sucks

The world is beautiful because of its variety!!

bryan Said on

i totally agree with the law. people like martin and malcolm died so that we could be respected as a people and here we are acting like a bunch of ignorant niggers walking around with pants sagging, gold all in our mouths, earrings in our ears big enough to choke a dinosaur. when are we going to learn to conduct ourselves with some class. if you want the white man to respect you learn to respect yourselves first

Termaine Said on

I think it is just another reason to put young people away in jail, people should have a right to wear or buy their cloths any way they like. I dont even sag my pant but i think its a violation of human rights, they should be trying to keep young people out of jail rather than putting them in. Also the hip hop world isnt the only ones who sag their pants. They might as well put everyone in jail in that case because mostly every guy I see sag their pants. People who are for the law are nothing but hypocrits, especially African Americans because if they think about it, they are sending atleast one young male in their family to jail. no ones perfect.

this is a disturbing trend black teens pickup annoying trends from these rappers, whom most wealthy and live by thier own beat. they set the worst fashion and young teens admirer them and popularize those images, wake up black community and leave irnogrant to those who can afford it.

I am sure that my comments will be unwelcomed after reviewing most of the posted comments; and I understand that sagging is some how what is “in and/or cool” at this time and it applies to mostly black males. However, I find it offensive to see young black males who wear their pants soooo low that I can see their whole butt!!! I am all for freedom of expression and the right to wear one’s clothes as he/she wishes. However, there should be a limit. I should be able to walk in my local stores and malls and not see several young men’s behinds or dirty dingy underwear. What about my right not to be exposed to that? What about my right not to have my children exposed to that? It’s not like this is at the club or a private affair. Its not like I can choose not to go to certain places where it wouldn’t be in my face. We are talking about public places. AND what is wrong with dressing with self-respect? What is wrong wearing “baggy pants” that have room. Why must the ALL of the underwear be exposed? The fine mentioned above is $25. To avoid the fine, GET A BELT, WEAR A SIZE SMALLER so the pants DO NOT FALL off of your lower half!!! This is not rocket science. I am all for this, I wish we had a similar ordinance where I live.

To UNlaw and poison control there are 2 roads a single person can take according to the word of GOD that you said man wrote UMlaw and to you poison control and If I understand you right, your name means something and you need to turn it around and control your poison, and let me tell you a thing or two lets say man did write the bible, were you there to witness it? and if so then can you tell me how it started when there was one time we as black people could not even read a book according to the so call white mans policy, could it be because we would gain knowledge and if so then you gain it too, there knowledge,do you know where you came from, because if you did then why are you trying to go back to an everlasting one that just won’t stop burning something you would not be able to quench,u know what don’t even though I know you will write me back, to only state your case, but guess what only a fool would respond to you again, because you and the other one is truely a pathway for someone to turn from GOD and turn to your foolish accusation, the bible says that when your time comes and you have not walk with GOD in the days of your youth, the LORD will say unto you DEPART from me I NEVER knew you which would be your final stage that you guys would not have to repent, because there would be none for you,Peace and I truely hope that Peace finds you before your Judgement before the FACE of GOD the One and Only TRUE GOD Judge you and the other that is not of this fold.

UMLAW:

Any comments on this BET blog are open for response; remember as you are so fond of reminding me…this is a public forum. Just as with anything, some people are fanatics about their religion and can go overboard quoting scriptures to justify wrong doings and “acting” religious and doing atrocious acts “in the name of the lord”. Only GOD can decide who goes to hell and who does not. Don’t be offended when true believers tell you that they are going to pray for you…prayer never hurt anybody. Also, true Christians will NEVER demean a person for not believing or being ignorant about GOD…that’s the opposite of GOD’s will. Finally, the bible may have been published by man…but all scripture is inspired by GOD; men moved by the Holy Spirit which is spoken from GOD, therefore GOD is the author of the bible.

Tadjata Said on

UMLaw,

I am not a religious person, however, I do believe in the God. I got to know God, not through religion but through, me. (I’m not saying you have to believe in God or a God).

There are many scientist who have reconciled science & God. I define God as the Creator of all things (including science) seen and unseen. God is the creator of Laws (universal laws) for all things–and they are created equally for all and apply to all…

UMlaw Said on

Tadjata: i respect everything you said. Personally, that doesn’t clear anything up for me. There are too many contradictions between factual science (i.e. dinosaurs/evolution) and Christianity/God for me to believe. I am not hoping there is no God…i just would not believe in something that is not factual, or proven beyond blind faith.
