Bernice and MLK III Sue Brother Dexter

July 12th, 2008

Bernice and MLK III sue brother Dexter.
The children of Martin Luther King have been at the center of a number of publicized family feuds mostly about the management of the King Center in Atlanta or the handling of their parents’ estate and legacies. In their most recent dispute, the first since the death of their sister Yolanda King in May 2007, Bernice and Martin Luther King III are suing their youngest brother Dexter Scott King. They claim he has mishandled money, including the $32 million the city of Atlanta paid for Martin Luther King Jr.’s papers, and hidden documents from them. They’re hoping the lawsuit will force Dexter, who is President of King Inc., to hold a meeting of board members. Bernice and Martin Luther King III are board members. “He owes Martin and Bernice an accounting of what has happened with all of the money,” said Jock Smith, the attorney representing Martin III and Bernice. “We’re trying to get an accounting as to the financing and well-being of the estate. The way to do that is to get records, books and accounting.”

It is a shame what the “LOVE” of money can cause between people. So many people are “Hell Bound” for the “Love” of it. It is a shame when family can’t get along because of money. How can we expect anyone to get along because so many of the churches are in the same fit. May God help us all!

Come on children!! Your folks would be very dissapointed in you! Both your parents were legends and are in the history books! Please don’t smear all the beautiful things that they have done for us all by fueding over money!!

You guys get it together and make your folks continue to be proud of you!!
NO LAW SUITS!!!!

Angie Said on

What would Martin Luther King Jr, say? You should not have law suits against each other. Get it together!

I don’t think people are really understanding this, they aren’t fighting over money trying to get money for themselves, they just want some accounting of where and how the money at the King Center is being spent. Bernice and Martin are both board members of the King Center, but to go the records they are seeking, they have to go through Dexter, who runs it. As board members, Dexter HAS to be accountable to them as to how money the money is being appropriated, etc., but apparently he hasn’t been as clear as maybe he should have with his siblings as well as other board members.

IN THESE TYPE OF SITUATIONS IT SEEM AS THOUGH MONEY IS ALWAYS THICKER THAN BLOOD

First, “the PURSUIT of money is the root of all evil”…there is nothing evil about money…personally, I’m rather fond of money.

Second, Dexter needs to provide a full accounting of all financial transactions concerning the management of the King center and their parent’s estates and legacies. No one person should control ALL of the money anyway. There needs to be a financial audit and proper internal controls implemented.

Finally, Dr. and Mrs. King would NOT approve of their offspring’s behavior. Simply shameful. America is watching.

I just read this on a hot forum on tall dating site: Tallmingle.com which is a hot dating site for all tall friends and tall singles.

I wholeheartedly agree with Tay’s statement. However, regardless of whether this is a bad hit for the King family’s image, I refuse to let this overshadow what the great doctor did for America. To Dr. King’s children, as someone else pointed out, don’t let the pursuit of money undo all the your parents have worked hard to build! Please resolve this issue!

you would think with parents like they had , that a matter like this wouldn’t even matter. I just hope that they can put this aside . LOOK @ THE BIGGER PICTURE!!!

Not cool…Considering the legacy their parents left you would think it would have been handled or not even an issue. But there’s always one knucklehead in the family who makes you look bad or embarrassed. I think the two siblings have to do what they have to do and make him accountable is a good start.

their mama and daddy must be rolling over in their graves to have their kids fighting over money after what they gave their lives for the kids are fighting over what their mama and dad did not what either one has deserve or work for they should be really ashamed of themselves

Bernice & MLK III say they want a board meeting!

Mackbear Said on

I am totally discussed that this would be happening to a family with such a great leacy. I know their parents are turning over in their graves. The King children could not have been raised that way.

WE DONT REALLY KNOW WHOS RIGHT AND WHOS WRONG, SO WE CANT MAKE AN ASSUMPTIONS ON THE MATTER, THEY COULD HAVE SETTLED THIS PRIVATELY………………………………..

It is seriously sad how some families (no matter whether rich or poor) fight over material things.

IT’S SAD FAMILY CAN’T GET ALONG BUT IT IS WHAT IT IS HUH

This is a very messy situation. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. , taught and preached non violence, if he were living he probably would let all of this go. My thougts about it is why wont he tell them about the money? Whateva the big secret is all i can say is, “its praying time.”

Niecie Said on

If I hadn’t said if before, I am going to say it now. Please people leave a will for your estate. This is what happens where there is money left behind from the head of a family. Money gets lost, items get misplaced and the family eventually falls apart. And for what? Material crap. It’s always about the dollars. However, I am saddened about this news. Family should be about more than this. Both of the parents, who are pillars in our culture, are gone and now look at the children. I just hope that this matter is resolved before it escalates into something unnecessary. I pray that it gets better.
