Black Girl Sets Aviation Record
July 14th, 2009

A 15-year-old Black girl from L.A. became the youngest African-American female pilot to make a solo flight across the United States. When Kimberly Anyadike landed her single-engine Cessna at Compton Woodley Airport Saturday, she was greeted by dozens of cheering admirers. She had taken off from Compton 13 days earlier with an adult safety pilot and an 87-year-old former Tuskegee Airman who served in World War II. Together, they flew to Newport News, Va., and made about a dozen stops along the way. “I wanted to inspire other kids to really believe in themselves,” said Anyadike, who learned to fly a plane and helicopter at 12 years old with the Compton-based Tomorrow’s Aeronautical Museum. She said she didn’t make the trip to set any records, only to honor the Tuskegee Airmen, the U.S. Army Air Corps’ all-Black WWII combat unit. “They left such a great legacy. I had big shoes to fill,” she said. “All they wanted to do was to be patriots for this country. They were told no, that they were stupid, that they didn’t have cognitive development to fly planes. They didn’t listen. They just did what they wanted to do.”

As I was reading this piece, it gave me goose bumps. I am so proud of the young black sister who has accomplished so much in her young life. May she be an inspiration for us all young and old. What is disturbing is I never would have known about this fantastic feat had I not been on this website. This deserves to be on all the networks, Oprah, Ellen, Dav, Jay, Conan, well you get my drift. This needs recognizing.

You go girl! I am a black woman from Compton and I continue to see that good things and good people are still making progress in Compton. =)
Nigerians always have it in them to do wondrous things but working hard on it is the problem…. Kim Anyadike keep the flag flying, you are a Naija Representer… Don’t forget you are Nigerian(Igbo presicely)
Congratulation, I seen this story on the news when she landed, a very proud moment for us all. “Anything is possible”.
I agree with asil and mary jenkins, people we must recognize and acknowledge great things as they occur, let her sit down with tyra banks, or oprah, and express how wonderful it felt to soar to excellence.
Although, she doesn’t need oprah, or tyra or any other talk show to hold her in high honors.
Keep reaching the sky Kim, and I look forward to seeing you walking on the MOON!
Nice story, nice accomplishment, I just wish it wasn’t illegal as all get out!
Under the USC Title 49 section 44724, the “Pilot” who let her “manipulate” the controls could well loose all certificates and the ability to fly!
TAM should keep doing its work, it just needs to stop the illegal acts it is committing! What message does violating the law to set a “Media Record” (since it can’t be a Aviation one) set? That simply isn’t good for anyone.
