Black Radio Listeners Undercounted, Critics Claim
May 19th, 2009Are radio stations that cater to largely Black and Latino audiences getting cheated out of important advertising dollars? On Monday, the federal government announced that it would look into complaints lodged by minority-oriented stations that their audiences are being seriously undercounted by Arbitron, a Maryland-based broadcast research firm. The problem, critics claim, is that Arbitron does not distribute enough of its Portable People Meters (PPMs) in communities of color. Lower counts make it more difficult to compete for advertisers. Minority-owned stations believe that the PPM is having “a devastating effect on their ability to compete,” Michael J. Copps, acting director of the Federal Communications Commission, said in a statement. “If our renewed commitment to promote minority broadcast ownership is to succeed, we must understand the ecosystem in which minority owners operate.” The metering devices, which are worn by radio listeners, register the radio stations they listen to. The FCC uses Arbitron’s figures in its analysis. But even though Arbitron calls its method a accurate way to measure what consumers listen to, broadcasters disagree. The problem, they say, is that Arbitron relies on homes with telephone service as its sample group. Since roughly a fifth of Black and Hispanic homes have only cell phone service, the methodology is faulty, critics contend.

JUST LIKE THE CENSUS IF YOU DON’T HAVE AN ACCURATE COUNT OF BLACK AND LATINO PEOPLE AND WHAT THEY NEED IN THEIR COMMUNITIES THE MONEY GOES SOME PLACE ELSE.
And without an adequate number of advertisers buying airtime on minority-owned radio stations, they run a greater risk of losing their space and being bought out by larger (usually white-owned) station.

BLACK Radio is all some of us have to learn about our lifes back ground. We need radio gave me courage to go back to school after 30years of being out.For my nursing degree.
First of all, the radio stations need to stop playing what these crazy teenagers want to hear all the time and play some artists that actually have some substance to their music. Kweli, Mos Def, dead prez, Murs, Common, The Roots and others get virtually no airplay and they all spit positivity and awareness. I personally stopped listening to the radio about 4 years ago because of the repetative nature of the music. The same songs get played over and over with little variety and it’s sickening. Turn off the radio! Peace.
THATS IGNORANT ITS IGNORANT THEY NEED TO STOP BEING IGNORANT THEY JUSS IGNORANT THEY RACIST AND IGNORANT
OBAMA ALL DAY
If you have grown up on black radio stations but have listened to others in the process you will always appreciate it we all support it in some type of way the calculations they are using really hurts now because of the new & not so new new means that can be used to get the information on who is really listening to what and even why they listen. We must try our best to institute change!

Michael Jackson, Jermaine Jackson, Madonna & one of favorite female
singers from the 70’s Rickie Lee Jones. And BET,inc. It’s time for a change
