Black Students Are Ghetto-ized At L.A. High School
June 30th, 2008Their names were changed in the yearbook to insulting fake names
At suburban Los Angeles’ Charter Oak High School, where fewer than 5 percent of the student body is African American, somebody stuck fake “ghetto” names under the yearbook photos of members of the Black Student Union, prompting angry parents and students to call for a reprint. “A yearbook is very significant and something you always hold on to,” Toi Jackson, mother of Charter Oak student Evanne, told the San Gabriel Valley Tribune. “When she shows it to her kids she will have to explain why she has the name Crisphy.” Among the phony names given to the nine Black students were “Crisphy Nanos,” “Tay Tay Shaniqua” and “Laquan White,” the Tribune reports. School Board President Joseph M. Probst called the incident “atrocious.” He said he did not know the student’s name or race but promised that “appropriate actions will be taken,” telling the Tribune that “I am sure the students will be spoken to and given an apology if they haven’t been already.” Authorities at the Covina, Calif., school, which has about 2,000 students, said that the prank was discovered after the yearbooks were distributed. “Someone was just trying to be funny, but it’s not funny,” Jordan Smith, a Black Student Union member, said. “It’s upsetting. It’s a mistake that should not have been overlooked.” About 4.5 percent of the student body are African American; 45 percent are Hispanic; and 30 percent are White, according to the Tribune.

SHARONDA IS TRIPPIN OK?
CALLIN THEM RACIST CRACKAS IS NOT GONNA SOLVE ANYTHING IT JUST MAKES THE PROBLEM WORSE.
AND THAT MAKES SHARONDA JUST AS IGNORANT THE PEOPLE WHO PUT THOSE NAMES IN THE YEARBOOK.
C said it best know yourself, your history and leave ignorance behind. Don’t be naive but progressive, mentally, professional and emoitionally smart.
Remember..that type of behavior and those type of people usually are taught at home. In their reprimand if they find the culprit(s)and example should be made of them like a semester of school/community service including but not limited to a public apology and the editors who allowed this need be fired no matter what color they are!
Sharonda’s comments are just that her comments and only reflect her thoughts. She is just upset but that does not mean you (anyone/everybody)call her anything our of her name cast judgement. Instead of calling her and her comments, ignorant, nasty. Pray for unity and the power of love & understanding
Irregardless if they find out who was behind this the staff or editors incharge should severely disiplined up termination…This is totally unacceptable.
Remember this when you call someone of your same race a name. Like N*gga. It’s only a matter of time before others will feel they can “call you names” too. Respect yourself! N*gga isn’t a cool word. So stop trying to make it okay. Thus, this other name calling will already be understood that it is a no no! And it won’t happen. Or it it does, we have a much better argument.
One Nation!
hi im evanne jackson and im a student at charter oak high and i was invovled in this school prank.I was put in the year book under the name CRISPY. I was really upset at the fact that someone would think his was a funny joke to play on BSU. This prank was not funny and not only wasnt it funny this prank made the BSU club look bad, and made all African american students look bad. I look at this incident as a sterotype that other Nationalities see us african american people as.For everyone who has heard or seen this story in the news paper , on the news or even heard it from a friend knows that this is not right. African americans are strong and i will not put up with this prank nor will anyone ever make me feel so Humiliated like i felt when i was this in my year book.
Evanne Jackson:
First of all, Congratulations of graduating from high school. Make college graduation your next goal. Second, never allow ANYONE else’s perception of you (or your race) to determine who you KNOW that you are. Regardless of what you are called or what is written about you…always, always hold your head up high and know that you are the descendent of kings and queens and greatness is expected from you. From your comment you sound like a strong, smart and confident, young adult. Sometimes in life our lessons are painful…don’t miss the message in this incident…and don’t let it hinder your success and self-esteem.
BE BLESSED!
there is an assumption that the responsible party is white. isn’t that racist also? or that the responsible party could be hispanic. another racist assumption. charter oak is a multi-racial, multi-cultural campus. the majority student population on the campus is not white. according to other news reports (both newspapers and news reports) the bsu names were not the only fillers left in before publication.
isn’t making an assumption without any research or all the facts similar to racism in that a judgment is being made based on ignorance and/or ignorant beliefs?
running down a school, its student body, its staff, and, ultimately, its community doesn’t solve/or resolve any issue. whatever is done will never satisfy/mollify everyone but i choose to believe that this won’t happen again at charter oak.
those annuals should be redone with the corrections made. those kids will probably keep those momentos for the rest of their lives. come on man (condenscendly)
New Black Panther said it–Blacks need to be united. Stop allowing these little episodes of whites bring you down. If the school is that racist, why go there? Is it because it is listed as a better school? My children attended the so called better school and was treated indifferent. I took them out and their progress is much better in their new school. Other parents experienced the same negativity but will not remove their kids simply because the school is listed as ‘better.’
FIRST OF ALL IT STARTS WITH US! I AM ALL FOR NAMING OUR CHILDREN NAMES WITH MEANING, INDIVIDUALITY, AND PRIDE. HOWEVER HOW PROUD ARE WE WHEN WE ARE SPEWING SLURS AT ONE ANOTHER. ON A DAILY WE REFER TO EACH OTHER AS “NI**#”, “B!&@#” AND OTHER DERROGATORY NAMES. AND NOW SOMEONE CHANGES A FEW NAMES IN A BOOK AND WE ARE OUT RAGED. I AM NOT SAYING OVER LOOK THIS INCIDENT, HOWEVER AS WE EXAMINE THIS INCIDENT AND OTHERS LIKE IT, WE NEED TO EXAMINE OURSELVES AND OUR OWN BEHAVIORS! THIS IS RIDICULOUS THAT THESE CHILDREN HAVE TO DEAL WITH THIS IGNORANCE.
OUR CHILDREN SHOULD BE ABLE TO AFFORD THE SAME LUXURIES AS ANY OTHER CHILD IN THIS WORLD, AND WE NEED TO STAND TOGETHER AND SUPPORT THEM. THE TRUTH TO THE MATTER IS THAT CHANGING THE NAMES AND REPLACING THE YEAR BOOKS ARE NOT GOING TO CHANGE THE IGNORANCE THAT IS EVER PREVELANT IN OUR SOCIETY. IT STARTS WITH US INDIVIDUALLY, CHANGE OUR VOCABULARY, CALL PEOPLE BY THEIR NAMES, AND DON’T ACCEPT ANYTHING LESS THAN WHAT YOU DESERVE. WE NEED TO QUIT MAKING EXCUSES FOR THE UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIORS!
STAND UP, SPEAK OUT, BELIEVE IN YOURSELF AND BE HEARD!
PEACE
MISS DEE
yes Jesus need to be in those people lives, and He also said to be wise as serpent and harmless as a dove. He gives us wisdom how to handle the situation, and just to say Jesus wasn’t mentioned is not solving the problem. We need to be doers of the word and not just hearers and sharers. There is a time to pray and a time to take action.
We as black people have to speak up, and take a stand like Dr. Martin Luther King did, like Rosa Parks did, if she would have got up out the seat, and went to the back like they wanted her to, then black people will still be sitting on the back of the bus.
What I’m not understanding is,how did the yearbook get printed and distibuted without being checked first ? Things that make you go HHHmmmmmmm
Who ever did this is a coward.Someone needs to responsible for republishing the books and extending an apology.
