Black Students Given Fake “Ghetto” Names in Yearbook

June 28th, 2008

“Tay Tay Shaniqua,” “Crisphy Nanos” and “Laquan White” are some of the fake “ghetto” names placed under photos of African American Students at Charter Oaks High School in a suburb of Los Angeles. A few of the students suspect that the act was a tasteless prank but they, as well as their parents, remain outraged. “A yearbook is very significant and something you always hold on to,” said Toi Jackson, whose daughter, Evanne, is  member of the school’s Black Student Union. “When she shows it to her kids she will have to explain why she has the name Crisphy.” The local school board president called the act atrocious and said he has identified the student responsible. To add insult to injury, the school passed out stickers with the correct names for the students to place in the yearbook. For parents of the affected students, that gesture is not enough. They are demanding a full reprint of the yearbook.

Would you all be just as offended if the roles were reversed and these were white students that instead of being called by their real names, were called Chip, Biff, Becky Sue or Kip? No, you’d probably think it was funny and be mad that the black students were being punished for it.

If we weren’t naming our children the first thing that pops into their head or spend the last month of your pregnancy combining everybody’s names into one and taking ghetto to the next level, this most likely would have never been an issue. Although it was wrong for what the students did, we really have nobody to blame but ourselves for this one.

2 pity.

Charter Oaks High School should be held fully responsible for this tasteless prank. The only right thing to do is a full reprint of the yearbook.

THEY NEED TO SUE THEM IGNORANT CRACKAS AND GET THEY SELFS PAID

Lillian Said on

Beside the fact you pay for a book that is going to last you a lifetime a bandage just won’t do so a reprint is the logical thing to do.

Big Chocolate Said on

To Sharonda: it’s ignorant people like you that give us a bad name because you always looking for a hustle to get paid.

If someone came on here and said “them ignorant Ni–ers got what they deserved” you’d be ready to fight, so why lower yourself to that level with a racist comment of your own.

I am a young lady that has just graduated from high school a few weeks ago and i can relate to how these students feel because i would feel that same way if it was me and my yearbook. Big Chocolate you sound stupid, right is right and wrong is worng…people have a right to name their children anything they want to that does not give some racist the right to disrespect their children and call them rude ghetto names, and the fact that these kids paid their hard earned money these yearbooks that are suppose to be a memory of the most important days of their lives, and to have someone ruin that for them is just plain ole wrong no matter what color or race is to blame. you cant be serious by saying its black peoples fault for naming their kids things that you and white america does think is a good enough name, you have no right to judge anyone else, your not GOD and your opinion on someones child’s name is useless. These families are not looking for money they are looking for they god giving right to respect and equalty. please check yourslef before you make the black race as a whole look stupid. Im sure Latin people, asian people and ehite people would all feel some kind of way if this was happening to them, so dont make it sound like these people are over reacting…The kids should get new yearbooks and the wrong do-ers need to publicly say WE ARE SORRY!…The Students, their parents and the yearbook staff are all to blame!

Big Chocolate Said on

Typical response, LaShae. Nobody is proclaiming to be God here, but we have to be willing to take responsiblity for bringing some things on ourselves. Now per what you said, the names are rude ghetto names. If that truly is the case, then why do people actually name their child something that you consider rude and ghetto? If you give your child some outrageous name, you can rest assured that your child will have a more difficult time than others…especially if their parents aren’t dedicating the necessary time to raise their kids instead of letting the television or the streets do it for them. Not everybody will be a Condoleeza (which came from the musical term “con dolcezza” which is italian for “with sweetness”). She too was ridiculed because of her name, but because she had a strong home support system, she was able to rise above it. Many of our youth lack that strong support system at home. You can try to say that I’m wrong, but that is a fact, whether you choose to accept it or not.

I, too, have a different sounding name and had I not had supportive parents and siblings or had I not grown up in a home with a strong religious and educational foundation, I don’t believe I would have achieved the level of success that I enjoy today.

MOST DIFF WHERE WAS THE PUBLISHER(OR ADULT IN CHARGE)THIS SHOULD NOT OF MADE IT PASSED THE YEARBOOK STAFF!!!!! BUT THERE SHOULD ABSOLUTELY BE NEW YEARBOOKS PRINTED!!!!!AND FOR THE LITTLE STICKERS USES THOSE TO MAKE THESE KIDS & THEIR FAMLIES SOMETHING SPECIAL BESIDE THE YEAR BOOK BEING REPRINTED FOR THEIR HUMILATION AND DISRESPECT!!!!!!!

Bailey Said on

it shouldnt be about what race they are. These youngs students don’t deserve to be disrespected like that. Last time I checked, the small percentage of blk ppl naming their children those names do not reflect our race as a whole.. & misconceptions like that lead the rest of the world to think blks are ghetto & ignorant.. So we shouldnt be blaming ourselves, only those ignorant enough to name their children “tequilia” & those ignorant to pull pranks like these. I refuse to blame myself for a mistake I did not commit, but I pity those who could ever think “ghetto” or “stereotypical” names are entertaining. Cause at the end of the day, despite your race, its gonna hurt. I’d like an order of a reprint, hold the racist pranks…

wow

i think that the people how did that should punish for what they did and where was the people that look over that yearbook before it was printed the they might have a part in it to

Ace Boogi Said on

That is horrible…I agree with the parents a re print should be worked on immediately. Your year book staff is supposed to be trusted students/employees, all things put in the year book should be proof read double checked a zillion times. Thass the significance of a yearbook its going to be there for a while…and like the story said somebodys going to have to show their kids that year book and explain to them why their name is Tay Tay Shaniqua ya kno….thats crazy. I’m surprised the school mascot isn’t a neuse

Arene Said on

Reprint-no question

tay Said on

Not only should the parent(s) of the student responsible have to foot the bill for the reprint, but the adult in charge should have to split the cost with the student.

Andre Said on

That is about the most foolish thing I’ve ever heard. A) The yearbooks should be reprinted and B) where was the teacher/parent to look over the yearbook before going to the printer?! If these students were white it would have NEVER happened, that’s just ridiculous!

Charlene Said on

I defintately want to know where the adults were when it came time to editing. Something tells me they knew and are trying to stay out the limelight. Who in their right mind would let a bunch of students print something AND make it all the way to delivery without looking through at least one copy. I vote for a reprint and the students expense but also to ban those students from the yearbook committee and take the teacher over it off it as well. I would also vote for the students responsible to not be in the yearbook.

Jessica Said on

Man we have come so far and yet still have a long ways to go. I can’t believe the school is not readily printing new yearbooks. I hope the parents keep fighting because this is just ridiculous.

DaMan Said on

and white people actually think racism is dead in America. I don’t think so. California is a racist state, especially Los Angeles. Just drive through a white neighborhood and see how many times you get stopped. You noticed the racism is always against Blacks and not asians and hispanics. White parents are teaching their kids the same ignorant racism against Blacks

LaShun Said on

Where was the adult in charge and how in the hell u think sticker is going to undo the damage? Wake up people!!! If you think that is bad check this out. A teacher at my school sent me a copy of an obituary and said ” why do YALL name your kids these names” Is this a girl or boy? I looked at him and said you ignorant SOB and walked off. These ppl dont care what they say to us…mind u that guy was a teacher in a room full of hispanics and blacks. What is the world coming to??
