Blacks Lack TV Presence in 2008, NAACP Says
December 20th, 2008Blacks lack TV presence in 2008, NAACP says. Time was back in the day, Blacks often stopped whatever they were doing to run to the television for a rare glimpse of their own complexion. Many years later, the NAACP says a “serious shortage” of Blacks on prime-time TV threatens to turn back the clock – and the Tyler Perrys of the industry can only do so much. “At a time when the country is excited about the election of the first African-American president in U.S. history, it is unthinkable that minorities would be so grossly under-represented on broadcast television,” NAACP president Benjamin Todd Jealous states in the report, “Out of Focus, Out of Sync: Take 4.” A virtual disappearance of Black-targeted programming has occurred since the WB and UPN networks merged two years ago, according to the report. Among the top four networks’ shows, only CBS’ “The Unit,” CW’s, “Everybody Hates Chris” and the CW’s “The Game” are led by Black casts, according to the study. The NAACP urges the formation of a task force including network execs, educators and activists to address the alleged shortage.

There is no shortage of blacks on TV. Maybe if you turn on the TV you would see they are all over the place.

First, it’s always good for black children to see positive black images portrayed on television. The more the better…we come in all sizes, shapes and skin tones from various walks of life so why not show the positive variety and not just the buffoons? Second, in some suburbs surrounding certain cities there are non-black children that have never dealt with non-white people before and even adults who only get their knowledge of blacks from the negative stereotypes portrayed on television. Case in point; I had a 43 year old white female colleague ask me earlier this year “Is Welfare only for black people”? I was so shocked at her audacity that I had to go into my office (close my door), pray and gather my thoughts before I could properly respond to her. Fortunately, I realized (just in time) that her question was born of a universal ignorance about real black people that some non-blacks still have in 2008! I knew then that I had to respond in an intellectual way “educate her” rather than in an emotional way “cuss her ass out” so that she would leave the experience more enlightened rather than with her feelings hurt (honestly cussing was my strongest initial response but I suppressed it). So I took that as an opportunity to teach her some REAL FACTS about my people. Apparently, some non-blacks only know what they see on television or the news about us…and too often that is not a good thing!
This is very true. I don’t even look at primetime television until Fridays when “Everybody Hates Chris” and “The Game” is on. We look at television so why can’t we on television? It seems that there are a few shows with one token black person. I guess it suppose to make us happy and shut us up. With a lot of these comments, it seems people are too afraid to say anything about it. I guess no one wants to make “Massa” mad.
