Blacks Lack TV Presence in 2008, NAACP Says

December 20th, 2008

Blacks lack TV presence in 2008, NAACP says. Time was back in the day, Blacks often stopped whatever they were doing to run to the television for a rare glimpse of their own complexion. Many years later, the NAACP says a “serious shortage” of Blacks on prime-time TV threatens to turn back the clock – and the Tyler Perrys of the industry can only do so much. “At a time when the country is excited about the election of the first African-American president in U.S. history, it is unthinkable that minorities would be so grossly under-represented on broadcast television,” NAACP president Benjamin Todd Jealous states in the report, “Out of Focus, Out of Sync: Take 4.” A virtual disappearance of Black-targeted programming has occurred since the WB and UPN networks merged two years ago, according to the report. Among the top four networks’ shows, only CBS’ “The Unit,” CW’s, “Everybody Hates Chris” and the CW’s “The Game” are led by Black casts, according to the study. The NAACP urges the formation of a task force including network execs, educators and activists to address the alleged shortage.

I feel there is a shortage of blacks on tv. They need to bring back more family shows instead of reality tv shows like, “Charm School”, and “Real Chance of love,” which portray black people making a fool of themselves. They need to bring back more shows that show that there are black people out there that are educated and have real family values and that are dealing with everyday issues like ” My Wife and Kids”, or “Girlfriends”.

Wow !! big deal…who cares how many black faces on TV!! What’s so important about that ? Please don’t say “Tyler Perry can only do so much”! Tyler don’t do anything but focus on fame as any one else does. Tyler needs to stop fooling blacks by putting God into his media , seems to be making them think thats this is the way..which is so far from the truth. You can’t put God is trashy talk. Just be a comedian and leave the Church out of it. Tyler speak about God then he wants to talk unholy talk at the same time. “For the love of money is the root of all evil”. This is what one should be concerned about ….how some try and make evil seem Holy…no not right !! Why is all some blacks want to fight over in…not having enough black this or that. Why not fight about cleaning up the hoods and taking the Bibles with you. Lets try to live Holy so we can meet that great day when the LORD returns from the sky. All it seems we want are to be white…have white hair …have the white women…leave our own hoods…follow the white man ….seems some just wants to be white period…do anything the white man do. If any race has belittled us ..we did it first. When the whites didn’t want to live in the same hoods as us..they left and so did the high nosed in the air blacks. We should have stayed in our own hoods and built them up..maybe …just maybe we would have our own TV stations world wide. OK…Enough rantin and ravin…lol LETS DO IT MY PEOPLE!!!

Yeah, we were all dupped by Fox and some other network channel that had a plethora of african-american sit-coms and soon has they had the black demographic hooked they pulled the plug on these shows. The big three aren’t pushing to have any sit-coms or any other weekly series that show cases the talents of african-american actors and actresses. Yes, on many shows there is “ONE” African-American — aka “the token” (which isn’t true in all cases). However, I do see the big three networks attempting to have a diverse cast on shows such as the CSI series and TNT’s Closer and the new show Leverage. TV is now neither all white nor all white — it’s pretty much becoming very diverse in it’s casting of good actors and actresses. SHANNLINWO — as they say in Baltimore — sounds like you feeling some kinda way about things.

It seems there are
a disproportionate number of blacks on NBA telecasts
a disproportionate number of blacks on NFL broadcasts
a disproportionate number of whites on NHL hockey broadcasts
a disproportionate number whites on PGA Tour broadcasts
a disproportionate number of blacks on MVT videos
a disproportionate number of whites on CMT videos

How can we complain about non-representation when we don’t even watch our own shows when they’re on? We don’t watch them or support the sponsors so no shows. It’s all about the support.

Yes my family and I feel the same way! That is why we have shorten the amount of tv that we watch. The problem is that we are not making a big enough stance. What are we going to do about it. Yes I am happy that someone is speaking out about it but what is the plan. We need to boycott or something. Stop watching the shows. I tell my children this all of the time. Every time we turn around there are 30 new white actors and only 1 or 2 black ones. See things are not changing. Black people lets take our money out of their pockets other minorities need to join with us and demand equality on tv. Ladies also we need to learn to love ourselves and stop aspiring to look like people on tv that dont even look like themselves. Lets get real! AGAIN ESSENCE WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO ABOUT THIS ITS TIME TO STAND TOGETHER SHOWING THE WORLD THAT BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL AND THE SAME AND IF PEOPLE DONT WANT TO EXCEPT THAT THAN WE SHOULD NO LONGER SUPPORT THEM BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT SUPPORTING US—WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO I ASK

and… where did NAACP get their statistics from? How did they measure the number blacks vs. whites v.s hispanics on tv?

did they measure the amount of influence blacks have? How about Oprah with her huge audience?

How is NAACP doing the counting… be nice to know instead of just getting all excited over some blurb from BET.
