Civil Rights Icon Will Deliver Inauguration Benediction
December 19th, 2008

Civil rights icon will deliver the inauguration benediction. The Rev. Joseph E. Lowery, who helped found one of the nation’s largest and oldest civil right groups and marched aside the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., has been tapped by President-elect Barack Obama to headline during inauguration ceremonies next month. Lowery, a stalwart of the Civil Rights Movement and co-founder of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, will deliver the benediction. He said Obama called to ask him to take part in the Jan. 20 ceremony but hadn’t decided exactly what role he would play. Obama said he’d get back to Lowery. “I guess this is his way of getting back to me,” Lowery said Wednesday afternoon. “I’m grateful to the president-elect for picking a small-town preacher like me to be on the program of such a historic inauguration. I’m humbled.” U.S. Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) said through a spokeswoman, “I am very pleased that a minister like Rev. Joseph Lowery will play a powerful role in this inauguration.”

I didn’t vote for Obama but I’m glad he won. He’s my President and I’m very proud of the way he has started his Presidency. He has won me over.
I thought the Inauguration speech was well spoken. The benediction, however, I thought was inappropriate. Let’s hear a prayer rather than a speech with political undertones. Additionally, is it really appropriate to infer that the white man needs extra help from God in order to do what is right?…nah, I don’t think so.
Just another face -
Don’t you think wisdom and prudence would lend itself to judging a person based on their merits, performance, and accomplishments? Perhaps it’s best to wait and see how this new president executes the office and then follow the established pattern of four years at a time before we just up and concede 8 yrs to the new president. Seems reasonable.
Am I the only person that finds it offensive that this Chirstian preacher says,”And as we leave this mountaintop, help us to hold on to the spirit of fellowship and the oneness of our family. Let us take that power back to our homes, our workplaces, our churches, our temples, our mosques, or wherever we seek your will.” Implying that the god of a temple the same living God that I worship? The God that died for my sins?
Very very sad. This is exactly what is still wrong with America. A racist man, making racist statements. We should be coming together with the election instead of having to hear that racist benediction. Does he think that’s how you bring the races together? That was offensive.
I Loved the benediction.
David is a loser,
Lola sucks…. black guys all the time
All of you all sound like a bunch of children bickering and throwing insults around
I am black and saddned. Though I do not believe that Rev. Lowery is a racist , I do believe that his comments at the end is his benediction were inapropriate. His comments are the antithesis of Dr. King’s nessage.
Can we have a day when we are united as Americans without the reminders and references to skin color
I believe that Lowery’s benediction was in very poor taste. When he made the comment about the different colors of people and stereotyping them the way he said:
“Lord, in the memory of all the saints who from their labors rest, and in the joy of a new beginning, we ask you to help us work for that day when black will not be asked to get in back, when brown can stick around … when yellow will be mellow … when the red man can get ahead, man; and when white will embrace what is right. That all those who do justice and love mercy say Amen.”.
Does he not see the progress we as a country has made? His racist comments are what fans the flames of racism and keep it alive. Does he think the black man is still asked to sit in the back, or that the brown man is not allowed somewhere or that the Asian people are angry, or that the white man is unable to accept what is right?
He didn’t inspire people to achieve something new, he set our country back 60 years!
I totally agree, the ending of the benediction was completely racist. It was a prayer that ended up being more of a racist platform. I also cannot believe all of the Obama supporters there who boo’d and sang the goodbye song when Bush walked out. That was completely classless and just enforces the white opinion that blacks are more racist than any other race but nobody can stand up and say anything about it without Jesse Jackson showing up on their front lawn. If it were a white man telling blacks to do whats right, the NAACP would be knocking on his door. I’ve also noticed that no news agency has picked up on this. When he’s asking the white to embrace what is right, has he forgotten about the NAACP, the United Negro College Fund, Miss Black America contest, Black History Month, and Martin Luther King Day? I dont see a NAAWP, a United Caucasion College Fund, Miss White America, White History Month, and our former president’s days on the calendar are all gone. I think the whites have done more than their share to honor and embrace the black race. And before anyone brings up the ’slave factor’, just remember that EVERY race in history has been enslaved at one time or another. Blacks weren’t the only slaves in the history of the world.
I read the words of Reverend Lowery’s benediction, and felt they were good. I think that if all of us could walk in his shoes for the past six decades, we would understand how he could say something like white embracing what is right. From what I have read about him, he appears to be a good man who has been battered by decades of cruel and unjust treatment by the white man. This type of battle that he has fought against his whole life must take it’s toll on someone. I know as a child, I knew in my heart that black people were not treated well, I knew it wasn’t right, and I remember feeling bad. I think that white people can cut Rev. Lowery a little slack when he says something like he did. Try to have a little understanding of where he came from and the roads he has traveled. Anyway, that’s my two bits.
Lowery is a racist. Along with the majoity of blacks. Also there is no such thing as a afican american… afica is a continent not a country. Lets see…there no asian americans just chinese americans, korean americans, japanesse american etc. No European americans. There are German americans, irish americans, etc. Get over it and get rid of affimative action. You don’t need it just look to the white house: a black man has the top job in america. Just put the crack down and go get a job and stop with the govt hand out.
I am very upset about the Rev’s speech. He had no right about what he said. That ended in the early 1900’s and that’s where it should stay. I was very offended.
