Congress Recommends Pardoning the First Black Boxing Champ

Congress recommends pardoning the first Black boxing champ.

It would be safe to call boxer Jack Johnson one of the boldest Black men in history. Not only did he make a living beating White men around the ring at a time when a Black man could be lynched with impunity, but he regularly flaunted his relationships with White women, which further insulted the sensibilities of a racially segregated, hostile nation. In 1908, U.S. officials had had enough and convicted the first Black heavyweight champion of transporting White women across U.S. state lines for immoral purposes. He was stripped of his title and sent to prison for about a year. Now, a full century later, Rep. Peter King has authored a resolution urging President Bush to grant Johnson a pardon. The resolution says that Johnson’s conviction was a result of racism because of his athletic popularity and relationships with White women. “He was a victim of the times and we need to set the record straight – clear his name – and recognize him for his groundbreaking contribution to the sport of boxing,” King said. Federal officials first tried to prosecute Johnson for his relationship with a White woman he later married, but they failed. Later, they pressured a second White woman to testify against him that he had taken her out of state, violating the Mann Act. Johnson’s life was the subject of the award-winning play, “Great White Hope,” and movie of the same name, starring James Earl Jones. Johnson held his title from 1908 to 1915. He fled the United States in 1913 following his conviction, but returned in 1920 to serve his sentence. After coming back to the states, he never regained his boxing crown.

Yeah! They should it ruin his boxing career with the slander and libel. Atlanta Journal Constitution did a story on him back in the Summer of 2004.I mean be fair ! White men were sleeping with black women during that era and having children with them. He just did the opposite of what they were doing.

About time!! Excuse me but white men were raping black women back then. There is a big difference from being forced and giving permission.

Black men will never be strong again until they begin to love themselves and their women and quit fighting with the white man over the white woman. This song has dragged on for so long its a little old to me. We need to focus on one another.

Trina55…Your comments goes both ways ..’Black Women’. Are at fault also Respect goes both ways . You can say that Black women will never be treated with the love they deserve untill they love them sevles and the black man. Both are at fault!!! The Blackman and the Black woman both are full of pride!! And untill they both come to respect each other besides the bedroom. And give each other their..’ Crowns’.. In a relationship they both will be confused and reject each other when the first sign of trouble comes into play. ..’Crowns’..Give in to the fact that you can not win all the time. Know that if you belive that ..’God ‘..Has given you this woman or man and you are in a christian relationship this means that ..’God ‘..Will use both of you and you have to admit and submit to each other when ..”God ‘..Uses you I think this is when most of the problems come into play .The man and the woman can and don’t submit to each other when ..’God’ Is in play because they only belive that ..’God can use only one of them.

Trina55,
Very good statement, I beieve the same thing – But its women who ALSO need to learn how to love and give strength to the proud yet lost black man. Once the black man and Woman learn to stand by one another – all other goals are obtainable. Trina 55 if you gotta facebook, hit me at Drake Love… message me.

Trina55..I must correct my self I said If you are in a..’ Christian relationship’..I must add that no matter what type of relationship you are in because not everyone is a Christian. If you have ..’God’. Leading both of you and has blessed your relationship.Godcan and will use both of you in your relationship so If you and your man have a good relationship with each other and ..’God’.Youwill not be afraid to submit to each other because both of you know that in difficult times you have trust in your mate because you know and understand that you have a praying Man or Woman. And it will be the..’Lord’.That will lead yourmate to make that difficult decision

This is only a form of individual reparations! ! ! Congress is absolutely right to try to make amends. The legislators who now preside in Washington were not the culprits! They should also name every member in Congress at the time, who was associated in this travesty ! !
