Court to review King love letters today.
Coretta Scott King kept love letters between she and her civil rights legend husband, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., beneath her bed, in a blue Samsonite suitcase, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. But Tuesday, those letters and other “intimate correspondence” between the Kings are expected to be in a far less private place: Fulton County Superior Court. The papers are caught in an increasingly bitter and public dispute among her three living children. On one side is Dexter King, head of the corporation that handles the rights to his father’s works. In May, he negotiated a $1.4 million contract to publish a biography of his mother. It would be co-written by the Rev. Barbara Reynolds, a journalist-turned-minister who taped conversations with Mrs. King before she died in January 2006. On the other side is Dexter King’s younger sister, Bernice King, who has refused to hand over the intimate correspondence between her parents for use in the biography. Bernice King says her mother didn’t want Reynolds to write the book and that the correspondence belongs to Mrs. King’s estate, which she controls. The family corporation that Dexter King leads, called King Inc., is seeking a temporary restraining order that would force Bernice King to give the papers to Reynolds. A judge ordered her to bring the letters and photos to court Tuesday, though they are not expected to be shown in court. At stake is the book contract with Penguin Group, the New York-based publisher that has threatened to pull out should Bernice King fail to hand over the papers by Friday.
These two people are dead. What harm could it do to them for the world to know just how much love these people had for one another and for this so call world you people said they changed. If this had been something about an adultrey and MLK have sex with one of his children, the fact of it still being personal would not be the topic. Now all of the sudden it is personal. You people need to make sure that when you define personal items you make sure it applies for when something is good and when something is bad. Remeber man ate from the tree that contain good and bad knowledge. So, good things should be treated just like it would if it was bad. And it that is devilsh, we I rather be in hell then to be on earth.
I pray that the King siblings will seek the Lord of their salvation and come together in peace so that they can settle their differences without all this public scrutiny is exposure. It is a true embarassment to what their parents worked so hard for in bringing them up in the ways of the Lord. We must keep them in our prayers and not judge or take sides.
These people are dead. How in the world could it hurt them now for the world to know how much love they had for each other as they had for the world. If this was about MLK cheating on his wife, everyone would want to read it. Now it is personal. You know for all of you people who believe that man ate from the tree that contained the knowledge of good and bad, then you must accept the good with the bad. You can not just determine when something is to personal when it is good and then define it not personal when it is bad and you want to know it anyway. And for those of you who think I am devilish, well I rather be in hell then in your world. At least their is fairness in hell, I can’t say the same when it comes to some of you black people.
This makes me very sad greed some people will sell there own mother for the almighty dollar.
It’s sad that a family will let greed take over.. All of this over something that their parents probably held close to their heart…Dexter wants to make money off of what made his parents happy…
i can understand that every one thinks it wrong because it is, he should of left it alone and it wouldnt be in the opening but scent it is him giving them letters up the next person is gong to do the same thing he did tryed to sell them to make money this world is all about money and it shouldnt be but what happens he goes to court get find guilty and suffer what ever happen while the next person hand them letter fall into will be the one dong the same just mto get money he was very wrong thats something you suppose to hold and have in the family for year til your kids have kids an so on but never think that the next person wont do it look at bursh and you still got people taking his side i want to see how they going to handle his case i bet it wont be him going to jail

I’m not sure why some people on this post keep saying that the both of them are wrong for bringing this mess into the media. I believe Berniece is the only one trying to defend her parents privacy where as Dexter is trying to expose it. And because Dr. and Mrs. King are both deceased, it still doesn’t mean the public needs to see what they wrote to each other in private. Money and greed will make you do foolish things. I hope and pray that they will come together as brother and sister and resolve this because it is turning out to be a heated situation. If Coretta stated to Ms. Reynolds herself that she didn’t want a book made of their conversation, then she should honor that. Please pray for this family. God bless!
One question to all “commenters” it’s only so much that the King’s children have know and was told, now who or if one is going to tell the other stories that are contained in those letters………OR DO WE REALLY NEED TO KNOW ???…..that is the BIG question in this situation, and what is also causing a rift between siblings. Personally i would love to hear more about the historic couple, but not at the expense of a fight or court order, (how unfortunate) PLEASE let “the dream” of peace live on!!!
To: Rev. Bernice and Martin, III hats off to you and God’s blessings for standing up for your Mother’s wishes!. Indeed as there are some things as Dr. and Mrs. King’s intimate letters that are priceless as the Sisters posted earlier. Its so sad that these family issues have to be played out in the open as a family fight in order that Mrs. Coretta King’s wishes are honored. Unfortunately, that is how some individuals who value a dollar above what is right and what constitutes integrity play their game and also force others who wish to do do the right thing into the play, due their own selfish greed.
Dexter is in charge of his father work and family inc.He should be making the decision on this…BUT not at the stake of falling out with his siblings. I think the judge will rule in dexter’s favor.
Its a shame the dollar bill has split a family decision making who’s parents stood for non violence. Did they not listen to Dr. King? The daughter seems to be the only one with the sense. Plus those letters were something sacred between the two of them. It shouldn’t be broadcasted to the world about the love they had for one another. We already know b/c they BOTH had love for u and I.
It is a shame that it has ot come to this. No matter who you are, rich or poor. What happens between a man and a woman is and always will be private. During that time all you had was the ones that you loved and could trust. If Dr. King wrote his wife intimate feelings then that is where it needs to stay between he and his wife and not to be published all over the world. No matter who is in control of the company there are lines that you do not cross. Dexter should realize that that part of his fathers letters should stay private and not exploited.

To the Late Dr. M L King and late Mrs. Coretta S. King children I say “Oh my sisters and brothers do not let this get out of control. This is a family matter not a coin toss with the publishers. Family means just that! FAMILY!!!!!!! Put ALL your effort into carrying on your parents dreams!! Make a mends with each other. Go hand in hand and VOTE!!!!! Continue the DREAM and help make that CHANGE! Everyone lets keep them in our prayers.
this is a disgrace, why would you wanna give up your parents inner most passionate private thoughts to anyone, shame on you for even considering let alone forcing your sister to take part in such terrible taste Dexter……your parents as i, would be ashame of your actions, your parents were better than this….
What a mess! Martin Luther King did not only want all the different people of this world to get alone, but especially his children. He would probably come back here and whip Dexter’s butt like the slaves were whipped by those ignorant slave owners back in slavery days. Why would either one of them want to share with the public something so personal ? Where has all the love gone ? If it were possible for there parents to know what was going on can you imagine the hurt and utter pain they would feel ? Children get it together , your father fought so hard for the rights of black people, do not make a mockery of him . Believe it or not you were included in his fight, your father did not only fight to make life better for all people of color , but for his children as well and probably more so for you all. Dexter I am so ashamed of you. I am just an old lady born in the forties and know the struggles your Dad fought and died for. Do not let the love of money destroy the love you children should have for one another.
