Cover-up By Philly Cops In Videotaped Beating?

May 12th, 2008

A lawyer says the police never believed the victims were involved in an officer’s death
Philly Cop BeatingDid the 15 Philly cops who beat down three Black men during a traffic stop last week really think they had nabbed the suspects in a local shooting, or did they make that story up to cover up a serious case of mistaken identity? Eldridge Suggs, the attorney for one of the beating victims, Dwayne “Lionel” Dyches, said that neither of the suspects was involved in a street-gang shooting – and the police knew it – but they initially thought they had captured the man who had shot a Philadelphia Police officer. “All they’ve done is make up some facts to account for the beating,” Suggs said. “And the reason why they beat this man is because he looked so much like the cop-killer.” On the evening of May 4, police stopped a car carrying Dyches, 24; Brian Hall, 23; and Pete Hopkins, 19. The three young men were yanked from their car and punched, stomped and pummeled with nightsticks by at least 15 policemen, as news helicopters captured the entire event on videotape. Thirteen of the officers have been put on leave. At a news conference Friday, Suggs held up a photo of Dyches and police shooting suspect Eric Floyd and called the two men’s resemblance “uncanny,” Philly.com reports. Floyd was captured last week and charged with the murder of Sgt. Stephen Liczbinski. Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey and Mayor Michael Nutter contend that the officers stopped the three beating victims after a triple shooting in North Philadelphia . They denied a cover-up but acknowledged that the incident was a “black eye on the force.” They also said that the Rev. Al Sharpton, who likened the police actions those of the officers involved in the infamous 1991 beating of motorist Rodney King in Los Angeles , was merely fanning racial flames by suggesting that the incident was racially motivated. Do you think there was a cover-up?

of course it’s a cover up!! a blatant abuse of power, and racial profiling at it’s finest!! those cops knew what they were doing from the beginning..they are ALL white, the victims are BLACK, and the cop that was killed was ALSO white… do the math…

PoRo Said on

Yeah right PPD, you are a Philly cop like I’m a airline pilot…..

I don’t know if any of you remember this story…but this story with the beating victims and mean they are victims…well some years ago a white man..said that a black guy shot his wife and tried to rob him…and the police force in Philly went door to door beating and arresting black men…this ashame..also they lost it during the Black Phanther years..the cops in Philly have always been out cold..

MAN O MAN…. regardless of the state, i think the police do a lot of negatvie things. not all but a vast majority. On sunday i was driving w/my man and his little brother they pulled us over “because yall r out, chilling” now a days they don’t have 2 have a reason, they searched our car, made them get on the ground and all but mind you we were parked already b/c we was picking someone up and i am from Boston… so i say f**** all these lame, using there authority to get somewhere sorry A** cops.

Are you kidding, a cover up? Man please! All you have to be is black…and be in the car with other brothers..could have been three deacons in the car..uummn Well!

WOW! Once again…Of cours its a cover up, they are never going to admit wrong doing, and this will get swept under the rug like evrything else.

PPD-22d then you should know the rules and procedures, of a car stop. You don’t just stop a car and drag people out and start beating. Is that a form of racial profiling, (he looked like the suspect a black male). So what you are saying is all black males look alike or are the all suspects? There is a right way to do things, and kicking a man on the ground is wrong at all times when he/she is not fighting back.

crybabyscry Said on

It was hardly an “attack”. It was little more than a school fight. No one was seriously hurt so why should anyone get in trouble?

SOBLU Said on

Oh and you best believe before any thing is published, when it may have potential for a law-suit it is backed by facts not fiction!

those cops should be sent to jail, and the mayor and chief of police should be forced to resigne

yeah it is a cover up!!!! some cops swear that just because they have a badge that they can do whatever they want. its true because i nearly got my butt locked up cuz a cop thought i was with a group of dudes who was selling and i was just trying to get some food from the Chinese store. I ain’t saying all cops are bad but the cops that feel like they can pick on the little people that are law abidding citizens are pathetic.

all i wanna know is why? everytime a cop or cops beat and hurt peoples more then less blacks its always justified. why are they always getting away with this type of thing, this is so wrong i mean they have it on video buy some how or another it means nothing maybe it was videoed wrong.i have a son with autisum he also was beaten by greenville county cops tased nearly broke his foot took his money all because they say he had something in his pocket the cover was he could have been drunk or on drugs you have four car’s of cops no blue lights flashing at 10:00pm you have peoples telling you a person is retarded can’t talk don’t understand you and you still say he’s drunk or on drugs and you don;t smell alcohol you don’t have your blue lights on because it will cause your cam to record now you tell me who was out looking for trouble now it’s time for a change because we are tired of our people’s being hurt are killed by cops and getting away with it i feel if they do the crime they should do the time like the black man do every day of it
