Cover-up By Philly Cops In Videotaped Beating?
May 12th, 2008A lawyer says the police never believed the victims were involved in an officer’s death
Did the 15 Philly cops who beat down three Black men during a traffic stop last week really think they had nabbed the suspects in a local shooting, or did they make that story up to cover up a serious case of mistaken identity? Eldridge Suggs, the attorney for one of the beating victims, Dwayne “Lionel” Dyches, said that neither of the suspects was involved in a street-gang shooting – and the police knew it – but they initially thought they had captured the man who had shot a Philadelphia Police officer. “All they’ve done is make up some facts to account for the beating,” Suggs said. “And the reason why they beat this man is because he looked so much like the cop-killer.” On the evening of May 4, police stopped a car carrying Dyches, 24; Brian Hall, 23; and Pete Hopkins, 19. The three young men were yanked from their car and punched, stomped and pummeled with nightsticks by at least 15 policemen, as news helicopters captured the entire event on videotape. Thirteen of the officers have been put on leave. At a news conference Friday, Suggs held up a photo of Dyches and police shooting suspect Eric Floyd and called the two men’s resemblance “uncanny,” Philly.com reports. Floyd was captured last week and charged with the murder of Sgt. Stephen Liczbinski. Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey and Mayor Michael Nutter contend that the officers stopped the three beating victims after a triple shooting in North Philadelphia . They denied a cover-up but acknowledged that the incident was a “black eye on the force.” They also said that the Rev. Al Sharpton, who likened the police actions those of the officers involved in the infamous 1991 beating of motorist Rodney King in Los Angeles , was merely fanning racial flames by suggesting that the incident was racially motivated. Do you think there was a cover-up?
Cover up??? Let’s be real, Policeman think they are above the law, and I see that everyday. I can get a ticket for talking on my cell phone without a hands free device, so who gives the officer a ticket when he’s on his? Who gives the tickets when they park where they please? Maybe this doesn’t apply to all, but it can sure apply to a big majority. And by the way-WE ALL DON’T LOOK ALIKE.
I believe this was a cover up. The police are not above the law. This is new time and day. Not all police shield them selves behind their badge but, those who do think they can do what ever when ever. I’m glad the news crew was there to film this taken place. If it would have been left up to the police to film the event, how much would have really been filmed from their patrol cars. I hope they are sued for this mistaken idenity.

I do believe it is a cover-up. They said that they were involved in a local shooting; however, were not charged as such. Those kids just happened to be BLACK at the wrong time.
Philly cop? If the story was caught on camera, what is there to cover up. There’s your evidence right there. You mean to tell me that it takes 15 cops to take three men into custody??? Must be some soft cops then since the pretty much beat the S#$@ out the guys!!

Cover up or not, the beating of the three men were unjustified. I haven’t yet heard that these guys were armed! I just think it’s sad that you can even trust the law anymore. I just keep on praying..I just hope it gets better before it gets worse.
Yes This is a cover up and I think that they had no right to beat those young men like that they should be in jail and they should b in there for attempted muder cause if they would have kept beating on them they would have probably died and i pray that god have mercy on their souls but also show them who Is God they have to face him on judgment Day and Man Oh Man it is comming sooner than you think just Look at the World NOW it is getting worse by the min.just like the bible says and its time to get right and do right now day you have to pray and pray hard for protection from all the wordly thing cuz it is the only thing that is going to help is Praying to Our Lord and savior Jesus Christ I pray that those young men come out on top and come to know the Lord if they dont which they might do Im pretty sure if I could say anything to them It would be that God is keeping Yall through it all and I will be praying everyday that justic is served Cuz God Know all and Sees all and If you Pray to him and just say Jesus he will work it all out for your good Im a living witness to that just hold on and be strong cuz God is with you and all he want is you to Keep the Faith and Trust in him!!!!

We should be policing our own communities; teaching our own children – people we must unite and take back what’s ours. How long will we sit around and allow officials to brutalize us and our children – our men are being attacked by those set forth to protect them. If we can’t trust the boys in blue, then we need to become Men in Black!
It was never my understanding that the police pulled the guys over because they thought that they had been involved in the murder of Sargeant Steven Liczbinski, the police officer who confronted the males responsible for the bank robbery inside of a grocery store and who are also ultimately responsible for his murder. The story in which BET refers to above, it was my understanding that someone in that car had just shot someone and that was why they were being pursued by the police before they were stopped, dragged out and viciously beaten.
Cover up or no cover up they did not deserve to be beat the way they were regardless of what they did.You don’t see them resisting arrest. You see the police looking to see which one can I beat.Plus the cameras don’t lie. There is not justifying what we saw. I have lived in Philly all my life and am ashamed at the way the police treats certain minorities. How can they call this the city of “Brotherly Love?” Where is the love toward our own people of this city. We teach our children to go to the police but when the police do things like this it makes them all look bad. I know that you do have some good cops but the bad makes the goood look bad. I feel as though everyone of them that was involved in the beating should be dismissed and charged with police brutality. What ever happen to “innocent until proven guilty?” Mayor do your job and stop trying to cover this situation up.You are disappointing the people of your fair city.
This is directed to PPD, I am a pilot, but it does not mean that all pilots drink while on the non drinking period, even though some do. In essence, I am saying just because you are with the Philly PD doesn’t mean wrongs did not occur. Don’t be that shallow. No matter what, you don’t beat a SUSPECT. Whatever happened to CIVIL RIGHTS? INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY????? Oh, I forgot, I am a Black person in America.
It’s just another sad story and i believe justice will not be served as usual ONLY because the three men that were beaten are black and All the cops were White….. Same Old Story and it does’nt make any since at all seriously!!!!
If the story that I have read over and over is correct, then it means that the attorney who is using a “cover up” defense will need to go back to the drawing board.
aight i seen the video…1st of all the car was NOT fully stopped when the cops literally YANKED nd beat down 3 black men….u kno wat i think?? Cops think that they can get away w/ ANYTHING nd EVERYTHING jus ’cause the got a badge….it’s NOT right…it’s jus ridiculous!!
