Cover-up By Philly Cops In Videotaped Beating?
May 12th, 2008A lawyer says the police never believed the victims were involved in an officer’s death
Did the 15 Philly cops who beat down three Black men during a traffic stop last week really think they had nabbed the suspects in a local shooting, or did they make that story up to cover up a serious case of mistaken identity? Eldridge Suggs, the attorney for one of the beating victims, Dwayne “Lionel” Dyches, said that neither of the suspects was involved in a street-gang shooting – and the police knew it – but they initially thought they had captured the man who had shot a Philadelphia Police officer. “All they’ve done is make up some facts to account for the beating,” Suggs said. “And the reason why they beat this man is because he looked so much like the cop-killer.” On the evening of May 4, police stopped a car carrying Dyches, 24; Brian Hall, 23; and Pete Hopkins, 19. The three young men were yanked from their car and punched, stomped and pummeled with nightsticks by at least 15 policemen, as news helicopters captured the entire event on videotape. Thirteen of the officers have been put on leave. At a news conference Friday, Suggs held up a photo of Dyches and police shooting suspect Eric Floyd and called the two men’s resemblance “uncanny,” Philly.com reports. Floyd was captured last week and charged with the murder of Sgt. Stephen Liczbinski. Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey and Mayor Michael Nutter contend that the officers stopped the three beating victims after a triple shooting in North Philadelphia . They denied a cover-up but acknowledged that the incident was a “black eye on the force.” They also said that the Rev. Al Sharpton, who likened the police actions those of the officers involved in the infamous 1991 beating of motorist Rodney King in Los Angeles , was merely fanning racial flames by suggesting that the incident was racially motivated. All of you that contribute to this is one way or another and you know who you are from media giants to dirty politicians down to filthy pigs that patrol our streets all have to face one judge. Your hands have bloods all over your hands!!!!!! Is is protect and serve or protect your neck while you continuosly serve the blacks in this country with brutality?
MP – I agree. If there is justice – I will be happy. But there is ALMOST NO justice for a Black man being BEAT Down, SHOT up and lets not forget FRAMED, etc. by Police. Most of the time (not all the time) unfortunately, it’s White Police Men taking out their everyday frustrations on Black Men’s heads.
It could’ve been their wife that pissed them off – but it’s a Black Man’s head that’s going to suffer – THAT’s in ANY STATE in America.
another sad day in America…Honestly things like this just make me worry more for my own brothers, not only do I have to worry about the enemy in the streets for them, but also the police…When is being BLACK going to be a little easier?? Just a little…may God have mercy on their souls

I do not know if it is a crover up .But it need to stop police have to understand we are all god people we are not all bad people no one want to be beat like that I live in a small place and I have so much fear of calling the police of being stop by one is this the way we have to live today we black people are human to I was born in 1963 and it was not like this when I was growing up.

Yes, just like the DC cops got off for killing that kid Deonte’, they never found a weapon near or on the boy and they recovered the vehicle days later, adn on top of that the young man was shot in the BACK of the head how was he firing at officers , then they left the scene changed vehicles and did no report it until after they shot and killed a 14 year old proverty stricken kid. Now the DC government is trying to find a solution. If anyone did not know the DC public school system is crappy unless you live in the wHITE NEIGHBORHOODS!

Ok we have heard these stories many times before. It was probably a cover up but then again we need to look at both sides of the story. White verses black, cop verses citizen innocence versesguilt. The cops were wrong in this case. They had no right even if the guy did look like someone it did not take 15 armed police to fight against 3 unarmed boys. Come on now. However where what were the people whp were videotaping at why didn’t they try to help. Society needs to step up from all directions because this is horrible and it could have been much worse. My prayers go out to the victims and there families stay blessed black men.

Even if the guys in the car were guilty… all crimes need to go through the judicial process, not just “hey these black guys look alike” so lets kick their a**. Being a cop is like being in a gang. The police have been gangbanging for eternity. And for crybaby- it doesnt matter if they were hurt or not. They were pulled from a car and beaten. That is wrong. If the same was done to you, I’m sure you’d be wondering when Al Sharpton and Jessie Jackson was gonna have your back too. “Why cant we all just get along?”
