Drugs Prove Effective in Controlling ADHD

April 30th, 2009

Chalk one up for the drugs. In a study that’s sure to reinvigorate the debate over whether children with attention deficit disorder are overmedicated, a new study shows that ADHD children on meds scored higher on academic exams than their un-medicated peers. In the nationally representative study, the first such long-term analysis of its kind, 600 children with the hyperactivity disorder were monitored from kindergarten through fifth grade. What their scores on several standardized math and reading tests revealed was that the average scores for medicated children were nearly 3 points higher in math and 5 points higher in reading. Both groups, however, performed lower than peers who did not suffer from ADHD. “We’re not trying to say in this study that medication is the only answer,” but the results suggest benefits that parents, educators and policy-makers shouldn’t ignore, said Richard Scheffler, the lead author and professor at the University of California at Berkeley’s School of Public Health. While behavior therapy and tutoring are proven aids to children who find it difficult to control their extreme fidgetiness and impulsive activity, the researchers did not examine those measures. Some 4 million U.S. children suffer from ADHD, half of whom are on powerful prescription drugs, such as Ritalin. Many educators and medical experts argue that school systems are too quick to medicate children rather than get them the non-drug assistance they need to overcome disorders. African-American children with ADHD are many times more likely to receive Ritalin than their White peers, according to earlier studies. Sometimes, critics have pointed out, ensuring that poor children get proper breakfast, lunch and dinner is a simpler, cheaper and much more effective cure for altering behavior than drugs.

I need that drug. But on the other hand, I would use it for illegal use.

I never got to take my Ritalin pills cause my mammy was busy taking all my pills and selling the rest to the other trailer park moms while they washed it down with old milwakee best beer.

That ain’t notthing. When us Asians take medicine, we wash ours down with a warm cup of dog piss.

Yes sometimes these kids can be a distraction to the learning process of others in the class. But medication is not always the answer to the problem. Sometimes African American boys are being given Ritalin to control their behavior simply because their white teacher is incapable of understanding or dealing with boys from a non-white environment. Some black kids live in and deal with circumstances that are totally unique to other kids in the class. Teachers and school administrators are neither educated or nor qualified to make the determination that a black kid needs Ritalin. Take your child to a black trained and licensed reputable child psychologist or two and consider non-prescription treatment if your child is diagnosed with ADHD before just medicating them. Never medicate your child just because the teacher or principle said he or she needs it. This is your child and you need to be sure that there is no other alternative; such as behavioral therapy. Remember this medication is affecting the chemical balance of your kid’s mind at home as well as at school and not all children with ADHD should be on medication and there are side effects that can be harmful to your child. THIS IS NOT A DECISION TO BE TAKEN LIGHTLY!!!
