Entertainment: Gabrielle Union Working on New NBC Series; Cedric Says a Critic Slew His Play; Akon says, ‘I Am a Felon’
December 3rd, 2008Gabrielle Union is working on a new NBC series. Gabrielle Union and X-Files writer/producer Frank Spotnitz are teaming up again to develop a new series for NBC. The two worked together on the short-lived ABC series Night Stalker during the 2005-2006 TV season. They’re now working on developing a series for the Peacock, according to Variety. Spontitz will write the show and Union, best known for her role in Bring It On, will star as a detective who must race to save someone’s life before it’s too late. The project is a collaboration by Union and Spotnitz and will be produced by Universal Media Studios.
Cedric says a critic slew his play. The David Mamet play, which also starred Haley Joel Osment and John Leguizamo, opened to much hype on Nov. 17, but it closed after just eight performances. “Barbershop” star Cedric insists one reviewer in particular was responsible. The bitter star says, “We got crushed by one critic, Ben Brantley, from The New York Times. All you need is one to say bad things, and he was the only one. So, write your protest letters to Ben Brantley!” Brantley likened the revival to “a souped-up sports car’s flat tire, built for speed but going nowhere.”
Akon says, “I am a felon.” In an interview with Essence.com, melodic rap-singer Akon sheds light on his much talked about criminal past. “No, I am a real convicted felon. I’ve been locked up once and I’ve been released. I’m more mature and intelligent to find ways to stay out of trouble. Believe it or not, that’s the challenge now, I want to see how he gets out of this one. A lot of times [the press] misconstrues and misinterprets. Being in jail was my experience and what I wanted to do with my music is say that this wasn’t a situation I ever wanted to experience again.”

I never heard of the play until now but I feel I would have loved it just because of who was in it. Stay up Ced, put it on dvd it will sell.

MR CEDRIC, I REMEBER ONE COLD AFTERNOON IN PHILLY AT THE ALL STARS GAME AND WE WERE ALL IN THE LINE(YES HE HAD TO STAND IN LINE AS WELL) AND HE COULDN’T EVEN BE COMFORTABLE AROUND BLACK PEOPLE THAT WERE GIVING HIM HIS PROPS. IN PHILLY WE ARE A LIL MORE CONSERVATIVE WE DON’T JUST JUMP WHEN WE SEE CELEBS (WELL MIKE JORDAN, MAGIC, KING JAMES U HAVE TO HOLD ME DOWN, HE, HE) BUT I SAW HIM AS BEING SO UNCOOL. HE WAS ACTUALLY TRYING TO HIDE IN THE LINE.
PLEASE BRO CEDRIC. – WHAT GOES AROUND COMES RIGHT BACK AT U.
I lost a lot of respect for Ced when he disrespected Rosa Parks in Barber Shop. Some things are just uncalled for. But as far as Akon…if he is a ex-criminal or not, that is nothing to be proud of and Black people, etc, you need therapy when you put these types of entertainers on pedastals just because they have you shaking your butts. You complain about crime in the neighborhoods but then you idolize the criminals, while decent young black people who didn’t resort to crime are under appreciated. I feel sad for our culture/community’s lack moral authority & rampant black on black crime -don’t blame the white man for that.
