Ex-NFL defensive lineman found dead

. Chris Mims, a former defensive lineman for the San Diego Chargers, was found dead in his downtown apartment Wednesday. He was 38. Authorities said there was no evidence of foul play. Mims was discovered shortly before 9:30 a.m. by police officers conducting a welfare check, police said. The coroner’s office declined to comment because Mims’ relatives had not yet been notified. Mims, who had been plagued by legal problems, played eight seasons in the NFL, seven with the Chargers and one with the Washington Redskins. He retired in 2000, finishing with 42 sacks and 10 forced fumbles in 104 games. Mims was a first-round draft pick out of Tennessee in 1992. He had a career-high 11 sacks when the Chargers won the AFC in 1994. The Chargers released him in 1997. A year later, Mims was convicted of refusing to take a blood-alcohol test after being pulled over for suspicion of drunken driving. His driver’s license was suspended for a year. A judge had previously found Mims innocent of driving under the influence because prosecutors failed to prove their case. In 1999, Mims was accused of attacking a man outside a fast-food restaurant for stealing his tacos. Tennessee Vols Coach Phillip Fulmer, who was offensive coordinator at the time Mims was a player, recalled how Mims and his teammates helped turn around a struggling defense in the early ’90s. “I had to coach against him every day in practice, and that was no fun,” Fulmer told The Associated Press Thursday. “That’s really a sad thing, a very young person to be passing away at that age.”

It is truly sad to hear of anyone’s passing. I attended Southwest College with this young man who had a bright future ahead of him. Friends would go and support the team’s games at home and away. We were all so proud the day he got the call to go to Tennessee and the opportunity that led him to play a sport he was dedicated to and loved professionally in San Diego. My prayers go out to his family.

Just Right, a welfare check is when a family memeber or friend can’t get in contact with you and they asked the police to go and check to see if you are alright, we will just pray for the man’s family.

that is really sad and im sorry i give respect to all of the family members and may he rest in peace

I work in law enforcement.

A welfare check is when a family member has notified the authorities that they haven’t heard from their loved one in a while. The family gives permission for the authorities to go in and check on that loved one.

Get the facts people before you start assuming foul play.

In DC Said on

Welfare check is usually done for someone who is considered a suicide risk.

well, thanks for clearing that up ~ “welfare check”. hell they should have stated what it was when printing it! quite naturally folks started thinking foul play… a man 38 – dead apparently without reason? Well it must have been his time to go – whatever the cause of death was… he was called home to Glory. so sad – may God grant his family peace and acceptance.

a check welfare call is when someone has been tryinh to contact that person for a while and was unable to, or if he was to have been somewhere and never showed up so you call your local PD dept. with the info.and they go out to make sure everything is okay. they do have a right to enter. someone had to call or there was an ordor. that’s really sad.May God give his family peace in this time and Bless them in everyway, to cope with their loss, it not an easy thing and especially when you leave so young. My prayers to chris Family
