Ex-NFL defensive lineman found dead
. Chris Mims, a former defensive lineman for the San Diego Chargers, was found dead in his downtown apartment Wednesday. He was 38. Authorities said there was no evidence of foul play. Mims was discovered shortly before 9:30 a.m. by police officers conducting a welfare check, police said. The coroner’s office declined to comment because Mims’ relatives had not yet been notified. Mims, who had been plagued by legal problems, played eight seasons in the NFL, seven with the Chargers and one with the Washington Redskins. He retired in 2000, finishing with 42 sacks and 10 forced fumbles in 104 games. Mims was a first-round draft pick out of Tennessee in 1992. He had a career-high 11 sacks when the Chargers won the AFC in 1994. The Chargers released him in 1997. A year later, Mims was convicted of refusing to take a blood-alcohol test after being pulled over for suspicion of drunken driving. His driver’s license was suspended for a year. A judge had previously found Mims innocent of driving under the influence because prosecutors failed to prove their case. In 1999, Mims was accused of attacking a man outside a fast-food restaurant for stealing his tacos. Tennessee Vols Coach Phillip Fulmer, who was offensive coordinator at the time Mims was a player, recalled how Mims and his teammates helped turn around a struggling defense in the early ’90s. “I had to coach against him every day in practice, and that was no fun,” Fulmer told The Associated Press Thursday. “That’s really a sad thing, a very young person to be passing away at that age.”

@ just right – a welfare check is just that…police checking on your welfare. A family member morethan likely [possibly a close friend, but would still need authorization from a family member...next of kin probably] had to contact the police to request a welfare check. I’m assuming he lived in another state or something…away from family.
May he rest in peace.
man thats so mess up..my prayers also goes out 2 his family..!
My prays go out to his family and friends, may Jesus comfort them in this trying time.
It is very sad to hear about someone so young passing away. My heart goes out to his family and friends in their time of grief. And just for the record…it’s called a “Well Being Check.”
I’m with Just Right???
This sounds like a bad case of how races Calif. can get; now the little torts oh well for someone of that stature, that ambitous, and that African American sounds reather nice. No signs of foul play really now, who ever heard of welfare check maybe it was just that, I, hope so because the attitudes of local white folks is we are going to still press on against young African America who gives a danm Barack Obama will be our next president, as the old saying gos nobody’s above the law.
This is SOO TRAGIC! I have seen the incredible athlete at work with such admiration. This should tell us ALL something, appreciate what all that God has given us. Health, family, friends, freedom, talent, career. To his family, just know that his suffering is no more and he is in the care of God. My prayers to the Mimms family.
How sad that the writer of this article still felt the need to mention negative information at such a sad time in his families lives.

Funnyeyes,
Thanks for clarifying what a welfare check was because I ignorantly thought that it had something to do with the social services administration.
To Francky:
My sincere condolescences on the passing of your mother…I lost mine in 2004. It may look dark now but…it get’s better…you never forget but the pain lessens with time….if you really think you could be next then perhaps you should find someone to talk to for an objective opinion….when your grieving it’s hart to be objective. Blessing.

Death is what we all must face someday, still it is soooo hard for our family and friends to accept when time here on earth has expired. To MIMS, I say REST IN PEACE. To his family and friends, I say, “GOD visited your garden and HE picked your flower……………During this difficult time in your life, only GOD can see you through. Remember GOD will never leave you nor forsake you. Take care and GOD BLESS!”
