Famous Sculptor Dies at 58
September 13th, 2008
If you saw the movie “Akeelah and the Bee,” you just might remember the scene when Akeelah and her spelling mentor gaze at a sculpture of Frederick Douglass before the big spelling showdown. The artist who did the sculpture, Tina Allen, has died. Allen’s ex-husband says she died at a Los Angeles hospital from complications of a heart attack. She was 58. Allen had also done sculptures of Martin Luther King Jr., Sojourner Truth and “Roots” author Alex Haley. A memorial service is set for next month in Los Angeles.
