Half of White Americans Call Obama A ‘Risky’ Choice

June 23rd, 2008

Two-thirds of Whites say they see McCain as a “safe” choice
Obama

Lost in all the hoopla over Sen. Barack Obama’s historic victory as the first African-American major-party nominee is the reality that a sizable chunk of White America would never support him for president. While racism in politics is a topic people only whisper about or hint at, a new poll sends a loud signal about just how much of a role it could play in the upcoming general election. Sixty percent of all Americans say that race relations in the United States are in sad shape, and nearly a third of Blacks and Whites admit that they harbor feelings of racial prejudice, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll. Even though negative racial attitudes are not as intense as they were in the 1990s, the chasm between the way Whites and Blacks see race is wider than ever, the poll shows. Six in 10 Black folks say that race relations are “not so good” or “poor,” compared with slightly more than half of White folks (53 percent) who see race relations more positively. Last month, 90 percent of Whites say that they would have no problem voting for a Black president; that number has dwindled to about 65 percent who say they would be “entirely comfortable” with an African-American commander in chief. But perhaps some more important numbers, as far as Obama’s presidential hopes are concerned, are the more than half of Whites who say that Obama is a “risky” choice, and the two-thirds of Whites who see McCain as a “safe” selection. Twenty percent say they believe Obama would give Black Americans extra consideration if he were president. Do you believe that 90 percent of Whites are OK with the idea of a Black president?

Are you saying that a white president gives consessions to white citizens, how foolish to imagine that a black president would give concessions to a black citizen. Does “We the people” mean anything???

I am absolutely certain that 90% of white Americans are not okay with having a Black President. Racism is very much a serious issue in this country and for those that do not think so are just deluding themselves. I will admit there are some whites that have no problem with race and would like to see Barack become our president, however I am sure there are many more who do not like the idea of a black president at all. Racism in the South still runs rampant and everyone knows it does because the Southerners do not hide the fact that they are racist. The problem is the hidden racism with the whites in other places such as in the Northern parts of America, yet it still prevails there alot as well!

Actually, I think the percentage of whites open to voting for a black president is more like 40 percent or less. You have the middle class blacks and whites and the lower class blacks that are supporting Obama. The affluent and the poor whites are definitely not going to vote for a black man, which meens we as black folks need to rally and vote for this man as this will likely be our first, last and best chance for a black president

I think Obama would be the best choice as president. I never was interested in politics until this year I just turned eighteen and this year is my first year being able to vote and I am. VOTE OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT.

tim Said on

It’s a safe bet that the 90% of blacks that are fervent Obama supporters favor him mostly because of his skin color – and that is racism. It would be a stupid mistake for anybody to vote for a president based on skin color. I am a white republican and I can’t stand McCain’s platform – but I can’t stand obama much much more – something really untrustworthy, very arrogant, proud, and innadequate about obama. Blacks want him mainly because he looks black. That’s a bad mistake.

tim Said on

You are forgetting also that blacks only make up about 12% of the US population. White make up about 70%. Obama’s supporters only see his skin color and his big hollow BS message “change”. But Obama is all arrogant talk and no matter. Shame, I don;t care much for McCain either. Screwed again.

Yeah we need a black man in the office we want to see how realy african american have the capacity of ruling the whole world we need him .

tim…..of course I want a black man to be president just because he is black. you as a white person have had someone that looks like you in there all of your life…..come on, and to put the icing on the cake for me he has a sistah (dark skin at that) What the white man is hating, is his mother was white. I don’t believe he would have made it as far as he has, if both parents were black. He can’t be any worse than the many white men before him.

Sistah Said on

MOM…..why would you say he is the wrong black man for the office, when there has been no black man for president ever, and just because you are married to a black man means nothing but I like the way you threw that in to break the ice, it’s almost like saying I have black friends, you should want it for your children. Being black is no cake walk, and for anyone black not wanting Obama for president shows we as a people still need help, what is wrong with us?l

I just wish, and pray that our white Brothers, and Sisters or if they prefer, to be called white America, will finally get over this fear of a Black Man,or Women and , Racism to realize that God has no respectable person, and God do not look at color for his Words states to Love one another, and if we don’t then we are fake, and not real, and God know that he created all Men’s equal.White America lets stop this Rhetoric about Obama being a Risky Choice, or not Qualifiled, God raised Barak Obama up at this moment, at the right time, and that is why he will be our next President, There is no one in the History of our Nation in my humble opinion that was more risky, then to put this current Administration in office, and we are paying for it right now.Just look at the economy, just to mention one thing.Give Barak a chance for I know that for one thing, he will reestablish our credibility around the World, and start the process of our Land healing,by leting God lead him,and seeking his advice.

first of all I personally think that we need a black honest man to run our country. Bush really *$~$*% this country up. He wants the rich to be rich and the poor to be poor. Mc Cain is behind bush 100% and thats not goood. Obama can make a lot of changes. All because of bush the price gases has went up. so BARACK OBAMA for president!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!He even brought half of our troops home to safety

Harmony Robison Said on

Does it matter the color of our president’s skin? It’s only there to protect the body against everyday elements.I think the reason why people are voting for Obama is because they’re prejudice, they just can’t get beyond his physical appearance and if we vote the wrong person into office,we all will pay the consequences. With the high gas prices and taxes, why be careless by thinking color matters? This can easily put us into a depression and some are turning a blind eye to this fact. The government already has control over where our money goes and soon might have control over our personal affairs. The government was originally built to help us to avoid destruction and help us to work together for survival but now government is using our labor for their own benefit.Obama only tells us what we want to hear but isn’t action better than words? Alot of what he’s promising has been tested and failed, screwing our economy more.

scott Said on

betsy, do you think you or going to sit on the right hand of the master?idont know if you are white or not but if you are you are screwed just like us = you do nt know what you are saying

American Said on

White America is NOT scared or owes anything to the black race. Individuals with any color of their skin is responsible for their lives. The last time I looked, their isn’t slavery in this country. Fact is only 1% of blacks were slaves before the Civil War. Also, fact Africans traded with white merchants for black slaves. Africa and now is tribal culture that killed or sold their enemies. Today we are just americans, lets start acting like it is. Their will be a backlash from the white race if this self pitty continues the white man owes.
