Half of White Americans Call Obama A ‘Risky’ Choice

Two-thirds of Whites say they see McCain as a “safe” choice
Obama

Lost in all the hoopla over Sen. Barack Obama’s historic victory as the first African-American major-party nominee is the reality that a sizable chunk of White America would never support him for president. While racism in politics is a topic people only whisper about or hint at, a new poll sends a loud signal about just how much of a role it could play in the upcoming general election. Sixty percent of all Americans say that race relations in the United States are in sad shape, and nearly a third of Blacks and Whites admit that they harbor feelings of racial prejudice, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll. Even though negative racial attitudes are not as intense as they were in the 1990s, the chasm between the way Whites and Blacks see race is wider than ever, the poll shows. Six in 10 Black folks say that race relations are “not so good” or “poor,” compared with slightly more than half of White folks (53 percent) who see race relations more positively. Last month, 90 percent of Whites say that they would have no problem voting for a Black president; that number has dwindled to about 65 percent who say they would be “entirely comfortable” with an African-American commander in chief. But perhaps some more important numbers, as far as Obama’s presidential hopes are concerned, are the more than half of Whites who say that Obama is a “risky” choice, and the two-thirds of Whites who see McCain as a “safe” selection. Twenty percent say they believe Obama would give Black Americans extra consideration if he were president. Do you believe that 90 percent of Whites are OK with the idea of a Black president?

One thing is for certain, and two things for sure.
If we look at History of past presidents all of which we thought we safe choices were not.
Only certainites we have is in GOD. Man will forsake you. I believe Obama was called to lead this county, and that for a surety is safe enough for me. McCain, how safe will he be with those health risks and age factor. However, White America would rather take a chance on him than Obama because of the color of his skin.

The white population is just scared that a black president will do a better job than bush that why they are calling a risky choice. But i think Obama is the best thing that that happend to the USA since Bill clition.

I truly believe Black Democrates will vote for Obama and at least 1/2 of serious White Democratic voters will vote for Obama. Enough of the Democratic voters will vote to make Obama our next president. America still has its racial divide, but I think will come together for this most important voting election. It is going to be an exciting time and it is going to be a lot of hard work for Obama to “run” the country. There is still that active “powers that be” force at work which will try to rule.

I don’t believe that any % of white Americans are cool with the idea of a black president. They are afraid we will get special treatment if Obama is president, but how do they think we’ve felt all these years that they have been given preferential treatment. Obama has my vote.

You know what once white americans started to feel somewhat of what black americans have been going through in the past years such as in alarming rates of uemployment, housing crisis, non stability of the econonmy and all the mayhem our current president Bush has put us in, they too want to put there trust in anybody who is going to promise them change which is what this country needs. My opionion is that if a white man screwed this country up then why not give a black, brown or off white individual for that matter a chance to get it right for once. They probaly think just like us, oh what the hell nobody can do worse. It can only go up from here that is if they keep Mcain out the white house. Now my people this is issues we should be discussing not filling up the message board on the R kelly cases because that issue is deep but we need to talk about things that are going to impact our future, he is already rich and famous and in reality he we never feel what you as an African American in this time are going through trying to take care of your family and what you are feeling..so stop wasting your time writing about him.
