Half of White Americans Call Obama A ‘Risky’ Choice

Two-thirds of Whites say they see McCain as a “safe” choice
Obama

Lost in all the hoopla over Sen. Barack Obama’s historic victory as the first African-American major-party nominee is the reality that a sizable chunk of White America would never support him for president. While racism in politics is a topic people only whisper about or hint at, a new poll sends a loud signal about just how much of a role it could play in the upcoming general election. Sixty percent of all Americans say that race relations in the United States are in sad shape, and nearly a third of Blacks and Whites admit that they harbor feelings of racial prejudice, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll. Even though negative racial attitudes are not as intense as they were in the 1990s, the chasm between the way Whites and Blacks see race is wider than ever, the poll shows. Six in 10 Black folks say that race relations are “not so good” or “poor,” compared with slightly more than half of White folks (53 percent) who see race relations more positively. Last month, 90 percent of Whites say that they would have no problem voting for a Black president; that number has dwindled to about 65 percent who say they would be “entirely comfortable” with an African-American commander in chief. But perhaps some more important numbers, as far as Obama’s presidential hopes are concerned, are the more than half of Whites who say that Obama is a “risky” choice, and the two-thirds of Whites who see McCain as a “safe” selection. Twenty percent say they believe Obama would give Black Americans extra consideration if he were president. Do you believe that 90 percent of Whites are OK with the idea of a Black president?

Black America first has to understand that we will not get special treatment just because a black man is in the white house. We have to continue to work and take care of our families that will not change. Do not think you will be receiving a check in the mail for slavery. Maybe we will get an apology from the US for all wrong committed against blacks in America and the 400 plus yrs of slavery. Let Pray and be happy that we are apart of history and remember God has the last say on who gets in the white house.

Not a Voter Said on

I am a young black male, that thinks that voting don’t make any difference. The reason why is because according to the constition (The Superm Law of the land) states Africans where not freed through the 13th amendment So why Vote in a country that still consider you( Black male, Female)a slave. I believe that it is time for a change, but the only way that I would ever vote would be if we the people could hold all of those in athority accountable for there action, so when they tell the people that they are going do something and they must know that punishment follows. untill then I will not VOTE. THANK YOU.

I don’t think that a lot of whites expected him to win the nomination. A white acquaintance was all for Obama until he actually got the nomination and then he told me that he is not going to vote for him. Before he got the nomination he said he would. It doesn’t matter. What matters is Black Americans need to take this opportunity for change and give Obama the chance to ’sink or swim.’ IT IS DEFINATELY TIME FOR A CHANGE!

White folks think Obama is a risky choice. Tell me are these the same White folks that put Bush in Office twice because he was such a good candidate? Please give me a break. If you could vote for Hillary you can vote for Obama. She has no more experience than he does. No matter how many times you say 39 years of experience does not make it the truth!. I tell you what the last time we went for the sure candidate I think this time I will go for the “risky” one. OBAMA 08!!!

This is so funny to me, these are the same two- third white folks that voted for Bush.Look at the mess Bush has caused our country.McCain is not the answer he is another Bush. Wake up white american. It is time for a change and that man is BARACK OBAMA!!!

I feel that Mr.Obama is a risk, but not in a bad way. He gives us as black people hope. { I mean I’m only 17, there’s alot I dont know} But I do know that Mr.Obama had to work very hard to get to where he’s at now. We should acknowledge his efforts and embrace him for his success. Although I don’t get to vote this year I hope that the people who do get to vote make a wise and mature vote!! { P.s: Its not nice to come on B.E.T’s page and dis a Black man… Thats rude. This should be a place of support for Mr.Obama. Please stop the player hating}

SiSi:

I respect your post and you are absolutely right. More of us adults should behave better than we do even when posting. While it’s no excuse understand that political discussions usually get emotional and sometimes adults don’t handle themselves accordingly. Strive to be better than us honey.

I fill that Obama just may win the election but, the only reason they will be putting him in office is so that when the stock market crashes, and we go thru a real depression, they will have Obama to point the finger at because How can Obama come in & fix what So many other presidents have messed up for over 40years in this country the only thing different about this situation is the color of his skin.I believe no matter what color of the person its the character of the person that truly matters. It’s really just time for real change in America Every president before him made promises they didn’t keep are lost their life trying.

I also feel that Obama is more than Qualified for the job of president and it is not to only help the people of color but to help everyone all should be treated equal it don’t matter if your Black or White it’s time to make change a real change for all americans.

When it your season, it is your season. I believe that Obama will do well as a president. We need to pray and cover our new president to be because I believe he will do a whole lot better than the leaders of the past. We have been known to dominate in whatever we set out to do. We are special, chosen and wonderfully made. He will do well. He definately has my support. Go Obama and first lady Michelle.

President OBAMA, when you take your oath. Please don’t forget about the constitution. We are being cheated in the tax realm. We are not suppose to be paying income taxes unless we work for the federal government. Come on and do the right thing and stop the income tax on Americans that have been robbed since the 30’s.

STOP THE DRAMA….AND VOTE FOR OBAMA!!!

I would love to see him become president, just because it has never happened, but it won’t change one thing for black people, we still hating, and killing one another.

“BE OF GOOD CHEER MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS”… “You just may, discover that the souls that matters, likes Barack Obama, just fine!”

However, on a personal note: I was compelled to respond, to the arrogance of a Dr. James Dobson, in his denigrating, of the honorable, Presidential Nominee, Barack Obama, and the First Family – to be!

In response to the dogma posted on James Dobson’s, Radio Show –

…A young man, reportedly, said, some time ago – “Why do you worry?”… “Did you not know that I was about my Father’s Business?”…

Wherever, Barack, has been, and to just whom he has spoken with or on behalf of; were in the interest of a greater good, a journey that has injected him into the world’s arenas, of frivolous posturing, hosted by fraternities of disparaging patriots … contemptuous of [HOPE]. And yes, Obama, having the audacity of [HOPE’S] tenacious, resilience of passion and human dignity; has all but, sealed his fate as the lamb of sacrifice, if you will… By all accounts, have inflamed the naysayer, to trample upon the truth in frantic attempts to shadow the vision of the lamb of any continued hope that may foster a real peace by virtue of dissemination, guaranteeing a preponderance in posterity for the duration of the People’s, United Nations… Any such shadows would be indicative of an anti-Christ… [“If a man says, I love God, and hateh his brother, is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?”]. 1 JOHN 4:20-21. Those that are truly of The Father will (KNOW HIS CHILDREN), especially, the Sons: “All of them, besides, the young Nazarene… Nonetheless, as would be in His Salutation – Jesus of Nazareth: Unto Barack Obama… “Blessed, are the merciful, for they shell received mercy.”…

[“BLESSED ARE THE MERCIFUL, FOR THEY SHALL RECEIVE MERCY.”]… Mr. Dobson may want to make of note of that…

As we speak, there are those whom have suggested that America should undergo a terrorist induced carnage, at this time, which, would help Senator Machine’s campaign: Sentiments of course, of McCain’s chief advisor, Charlie Black, and mp’s (media pimps), twisted and terribly distorted, criminal, and subliminal visions, in an extrapolation, that will play host to apocalypse trumpets which should ignite the sleeping warrior (McCain), no doubt: “Desecrates, the gift of life.”… And truth be told – any such, palpitating call at 3:00am, is subject to take out, or either (compromise), the “best,” of health… People, do take care, for what thou has asked…

The Republican’s fear, no – nightmare, is that the Democrats are likely to enhance the White House for the greater portion of the century… Why?… Because no one is going to attack this young President: “And why not?”… A fool knows, NOT to INVOKE a world catalyst, which is sure to mimic nothing short of mass suicide – HYPOTHETICALLY… Though, arguably, like the young Nazarene, this young President has family everywhere… His blood line can be liken unto the River Nile, long and diverse.

An excerpt from a compatriot: Frank Schaeffer – Senator Obama just took another giant step toward winning the presidency. Actually, someone who considers himself a sworn enemy of Senator Obama took the step for him. Dr. Dobson of the Focus On the Family radio program (and evangelical media empire) has aired a program in which he attacks Senator Obama, the Senator’s theology and his credentials as a Christian. With enemies like this Senator Obama doesn’t need friends.

Well here we go getting to the real issue in this presidential election.Race, creed, age shoe size should not matter it is about who is best to lead this country into the the next four or even eight years if you will. Bs like this will always come up whenever there are people of different skin color opposed to become a powerful force in any aspect of life.Whether Obama gets it or McCain hopefully they be willing to turn this country around for the best, because the administration that is leaving has gotten more blood on their hands than maybe even the Reagan era did. this old racist peopl need to take a bac seat because sure as the sun set and rise change is coming. GOD BLESS AMERICA

If they don’t want Obama for president, then I guess they just want another crooked president who tell lies like the ones in the pass. It’s time to show the world that it could be better off without some president always lyin and scheming for the better of it’s own personal gain. The world needs to be a place of peace and happiness for all man kind. Not about what man can possess, or control. It should be about humanity so all can prosper in a way that we as people can be excepted into Gods Kingdom, merciful. But I know that’s asking to much, for the world to get long. We all know it’s time for change. If you took a chance on George Bush running this country, don’t u think it would be a change for the better to get a democratic president like Obama? He can’t be worst, just try it. Guarantee you will like this choice better. I’m not a politician but I’m not stupid either. You want to gain or you want to lose you choose. I choose to make a change, don’t let the media pick your presidential candidate be smart play your part pick Barack Obama for you next best president. I promise u can’t go wrong let’s make history together. Take a stand for your country.

The whole world is not ready for a black president I say this because look at how we do each other if we work together instead of fighting with one another we could go far yes Im angry I want to lash out at some of these uncle toms and these white folks who are bringing Obama down but the change starts within ourselves we have to grow as a whole if we want change I ran into a young man the other day asked him was he voting he told me why try I tell him because really its up to us because we are the people white folks have been winning too long yall when we are the original winners when we see that skies the limit we can do anything we want to do and be anything we want to be but our success is our own lets own it yall dont get down and give up because you know the deal on some of white America Im not gone say all(Bill Cliton What Up!!!!)Obama is the future and we got more to come vote for Obama cause he real not only cause he black much love respect chuuuch!!!!!

I don’t feel color should make a difference. If the economy is in bad shape, I choose the best canidate for the job. History have proven that republicans can make a mess of things and it take a strong DEMOCRATE to clean it up. If Obama can be our next Bill Clinton SO BE IT!!!

Kool Hand Said on

I don’t know where your getting these poll numbers from because they don’t make sense. He won the Democratic nomination and is well ahead in the polls against McCain, so it seems to me there are ALOT of white people backing him other wise he would not be in the driver seat in this election. I also think that just becau8se someone says they think Obama is ‘risky’ does not necessarily mean they mean because of his color. They might just mean his politics. Of course a republican would think he was risky they would think any democrat would be risky because they have a different view on things. Of course I also realize there is always going to be a small part of ANY race that just don’t trust people different then them, but nothing can be done to fix ignorant.

George Said on

Risky – if that ain’t some dumb-sounding B.S., I don’t know what is. THEY’RE ALL RISKY!!! At least Obama isn’t talking about fighting a 100-year war when our economy’s in the dumps.
