Half of White Americans Call Obama A ‘Risky’ Choice
June 23rd, 2008Two-thirds of Whites say they see McCain as a “safe” choice

Lost in all the hoopla over Sen. Barack Obama’s historic victory as the first African-American major-party nominee is the reality that a sizable chunk of White America would never support him for president. While racism in politics is a topic people only whisper about or hint at, a new poll sends a loud signal about just how much of a role it could play in the upcoming general election. Sixty percent of all Americans say that race relations in the United States are in sad shape, and nearly a third of Blacks and Whites admit that they harbor feelings of racial prejudice, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll. Even though negative racial attitudes are not as intense as they were in the 1990s, the chasm between the way Whites and Blacks see race is wider than ever, the poll shows. Six in 10 Black folks say that race relations are “not so good” or “poor,” compared with slightly more than half of White folks (53 percent) who see race relations more positively. Last month, 90 percent of Whites say that they would have no problem voting for a Black president; that number has dwindled to about 65 percent who say they would be “entirely comfortable” with an African-American commander in chief. But perhaps some more important numbers, as far as Obama’s presidential hopes are concerned, are the more than half of Whites who say that Obama is a “risky” choice, and the two-thirds of Whites who see McCain as a “safe” selection. Twenty percent say they believe Obama would give Black Americans extra consideration if he were president. Do you believe that 90 percent of Whites are OK with the idea of a Black president?

I keep hoping that America is closer to moving toward a color-blind society when it comes to electing a president of the United States. I believe that when White American get in that voting booth, they will vote for Barack Obama because everyone has had enough of the Bush policies which McCain expouses. I pray that is the case anyway and Barack Obama becomes the president of the United States, not because of his color. But because he is the most qualified.
This is more BS. The only experienced president is a second-term president so dismiss us with that BS. White America is scared to death that a black man could actually rule the most powerful position in the world. We have taken over some of their most sacred things like golf and tennis and to take over the white house will just drive them MAD!! And talk about risk? How can you get more risky than George Bush? Let the troops in Iraq answer that one.
RACE HAS ALWAYS BEEN A CRITICAL ISSUE IN AN ELECTION SUCH AS THIS. OBAMA BEEING A BLACK AMERICAN IS AN ISSUE.BUT THE POLL IS NOT TO BE RELIED ON FOR THE SUCCESS OR FAILURE OF OBAMA.VOTERS GENUINE OPINIONS ARE HARDLY OBTAINED UNTIL THE “INJURY” TIME OF AN ELECTION.
THE SUCCESS OR FAILURE OF OBAMA DEPENDS ON WHAT GOD HAS DESTINED FOR HIM. OBAMA AND HIS SUPPORTERS NEED STRONG PRAYERS AND HELP FROM GOD ALMIGHTY TO SUCCEED.HOWEVER,IT SEEMS A GREAT HISTORY IS ABOUT TO BE MADE!
I think when you talk presidency, you have to throw race out the window. We need to stay focused on the best candidate to run this country. VOTE OBAMA ON THAT NOTE!
Those 50 percent of White Americans who feel Senator Obama would be a risky presidential choice are just paranoid. The fear of seeing an African American in the “White House” is probably too much for them to digest. Would the same 50 percent of Whites feel the same way if Senator Clinton was the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee? Absolutely not. Senator Obama has gone from not being black enough, to too black. The conservative white media will do everything possible, by using fear tactics and outright lies against Senator Obama, to keep him from winning the presidential election. No, I don’t feel that 90 percent of Whites are OK with the idea of a Black president? Perhaps, 40 percent or less would be more accurate!
As a white man (older) who supports Obama with my vote and financially, I want to point out something that should be obvious in this story.
For the first time in history white voters may NOT have a say in who becomes our president. If the “white” vote is a wash – it means that for the first time, people of color can actually decide who our nation’s leader becomes. For this reason, it is VERY important that you not only vote, but must also help get your family and friends to register and vote as well. Volunteer, support Obama financially, and even drive people to the polls.
I will do whatever I can to educate my friends and family (including some black friends who have never bothered to vote), but it really looks like it is YOUR vote that will count, and it is up to you to direct the future of our country.
The fact that BET even have this stupid sh*t on a ”BLACK NETWORK” …makes it clear that it is not BLACK!!!
White owned BET is spreading this sh*t with blogs like this !! BUSH has taught ”mutant” Americans ONE thing (cause we know they are retarded and intelligent thinking they lack due to their mutated form) and that is they ALL are EVIL, GREEDY MONSTERS and don’t care about nothing or no one but themselves and the stuff they need to FEEL special …POWER OVER EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING !! Basically …THEY ARE INSANE !!
And if half of American REALLY felt that way …HOW COME HE BEAT THE WHITE GIRL ?! Clearly according to WHITE OWNED BET …HE SHOULD NOT HAVE WON !!! I did not see a 50/50 split between them …YOU?
So who are the 50% Americans BET is speaking of? And the bottomline …if AFRICAN AMERICAN DON’T GET A WHOLE OF OUR OWN FUTURE IT WILL GO THE SAME WAY THE MUTANTS HERE WILL GO …and that is DOWN !! Learn your history …White nations don’t last long …cause they are RETARDED !! And America is on its way out !! It must go …for the sake of the world and the universe will MAKE IT HAPPEN ! Now let’s see WHITE OWNED BET POST THIS !!
Fear is one of this nations best dividers. It has been used as a weapon since the landing of the May Flower. The White people that are afraid of giving a Black man this type of authority , have been raised to fear black people at a very young age . They are not looking at his whole party which is made up of all cultures , they are just focused on Mr Obamas skin color. It is very hard for them to shake values that has been passed on from generation to generation.
Its not the race that I am concerned about. It is the issues that Obama supports. We as black people need to READ and do our research on these presidential candidates.
The choices may be slim, but lets make a wise decision. Not one that is solely based on the color of our candidates skin.
well we all are certan that america has had many white leaders and it is certan that the rich keeps getting rich now why is that? well for one thing thay take care of there own and blacks need to step up to the plate. It’s hard not to think a black man in charge of the nation when blacks do not look after themself (some) to many black on black crimes,to many fatherless kids,to many black men in jail who would of thought that all the years thrue the fighting pushing on and on the songs had change from the fields to music were blacks still call themselves the n word insted of getting big rims for the car and bling for show why not a company a bank or somthing white kids are doing it and making out like billinars look at u tube, google, myspace, the list goes on an on so i ask where is the black minds at today???
Absolutely not, 90% of whites are not OK with the idea of a black president. Let’s be real…most would rather have $19/gal. gas, more dead soldiers coming home from Iraq, abortions become illegal again and be able to say that “at least the white house is still white”. Racism runs very deep in America and distracts from the real issues. Actually, its human nature to fear the repercussions of your actions (or your ancestors actions) when the power shifts. However, in Obama’s defense …he’s BIRACIAL and really wants to unite the country…the way it should have been all along. Are whites really worried that Obama he will give extra consideration to blacks or that he will NOT continue to give extra consideration to whites? For instance, however, every time a less qualified white person get’s the job, the loan, the scholarship over a more qualified black person (with everything else being equal)…isn’t that “extra consideration”? or is that a just typical day in America? CHANGE terrifies people who are comfortable and benefiting from the current status.
I will “NOT” vote for McCain and I am white.
I wanted Hillary but that chance is gone.
I will vote for Obama if that is my last resort and to keep McCain out of office
I have a son in the Army and I do not want him to die in Irqa and if McCain is in office he intends to continue this War of Mass destruction,
Hello, Mass destruction is leaving our troops over Irqa.
I also feel we owe the black man for the white
mans stupid moves back in the day.
Uys been a long time coming. I’m tired of struggling and if obama wins our people will be able to get a good Night sleep I think this will be another Martin Luther king situation the whites won’t stand to see a black man succeed and do better or become the first so with that being said someone might or will assassinate obama
It honestly scares me to have Obama go into office. A lot of people won’t understand that it will take much longer then his presidency tenure to fix the mess that Bush made. I think that anyone who steps in after Bush will end up being unfavorable. I know he can do the job better then anyone else. McCain is such a poor choice.
I truly believe that it’s time for a black man to step his game up and claim the place as the next President of the U.S. I believe that we are spending too much money on the war, which is what McCain supports. Because of the war, gas prices are rising and when they rise, everything else has to follow suit. Bush is not really doing us any good because we are hearing all of these promises, but nothing is being done. If the White Americans believe that McCain will be a better choice, then they need to prepare themselves for $5.00-$7.00 a gallon for gas and for the war in Iraq to continue for the next 4 years. They have no one to blame but themselves. I can hear the complaining now after the choices that they might possibly make.
Voting for McCain will be the risk
The bottom line is that elections is about numbers and voting blocks. The blacks in America are roughly 12% of the voting population and overwhelmingly support OBAMA. The whites who are over 60% will do like the blacks and support McCain and the hispanics will flow with 60%/40% in favour of McCain.
This will result in a McCain win. I will be surprised if OBAMA can overturn prejudice overnight as it takes time to CHANGE genuine concerns especially issues concerning race.
This point was pointed out by HILARY CLINTON as she pointed this out and demonstrated this in the last few races she won before pulling out of the race.
In my opinion, and as a BLACK, I feel OBAMA’s best chance of becoming president was to first come in as VICE PRESIDENT under Hilary’s ticket which would have been a SURE winner (America is much uch more ready for a white woman than a black president). OBAMA then will have a stronger chance of becoming president after this and he has age on his side.
Appart from RACE, OBAMA has the issue of experience to contend with which would make many white voters genuinely concerned and vote McCain.
As much as I would like to see Obama win, my brains tell me it is a lost opportunity and a PIPE DREAM. I hope I am wrong.
BET, I have to agree with TW. This question is very devious and I would expect it to be put forward on a racist conservative blog. Please be more positive at this extremely important moment in out history.
This such crap. They put this out so it will keep people thinking about an African American in the white house. This is what political stratagist does. Put rumors out in the public so they can favor the other candidate. This is to play on the heart strings of Americans of all color and religion. Make em feel guilty if something does happen. LISTEN EVERYONE: WE NEED THE REPUBLICANS OUT OF THE WHITE HOUSE. IT IS TIME FOR A POSITIVE CHANGE AND MCCAIN WILL NOT BE THE ONE TO GIVE IT TO US. THE WHITED MONIES WILL CONTINUE TO PILE UP AND OUR WORKING CLASS SELVES WILL CONTINUE TO LOSE OUR JOBS AND HOMES. TO ME THIS IS CALLED WHAT THE OLD FOLKS USE TO SAY “KEEP EM BAREFOOT AND PREGNANT”. LETS DO THE RIGHT THING AND MAKE IT BETTER FOR OUR GENERATIONS TO COME
I believe Democrats of all races will vote for Sen. Obama in November and he will be our next President. But I also realize that there are people who will not vote for him because of their insecurities, fears, and racism. Sen. Obama is the Presumptive Nominee for and of the American people. And this is what we must embrace. If those who doubt, don’t do it out of prejudice and fear, listen to his messages. Educate yourself on his blueprint for change, visit his website wwww.barackobama.com, and then vote your conscious. Just ask yourself, “How can we dictate to other countries about democracy and freedom and, although we made some progress, but we still have a problem with voting for a candidate who happens to be Black. Sen. Obama is the only candidate, I passionately believe, who can and will bridge the gap domestically and international to restoring respect and honor to America. Obama ‘08
