Half of White Americans Call Obama A ‘Risky’ Choice

Lost in all the hoopla over Sen. Barack Obama’s historic victory as the first African-American major-party nominee is the reality that a sizable chunk of White America would never support him for president. While racism in politics is a topic people only whisper about or hint at, a new poll sends a loud signal about just how much of a role it could play in the upcoming general election. Sixty percent of all Americans say that race relations in the United States are in sad shape, and nearly a third of Blacks and Whites admit that they harbor feelings of racial prejudice, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll. Even though negative racial attitudes are not as intense as they were in the 1990s, the chasm between the way Whites and Blacks see race is wider than ever, the poll shows. Six in 10 Black folks say that race relations are “not so good” or “poor,” compared with slightly more than half of White folks (53 percent) who see race relations more positively. Last month, 90 percent of Whites say that they would have no problem voting for a Black president; that number has dwindled to about 65 percent who say they would be “entirely comfortable” with an African-American commander in chief. But perhaps some more important numbers, as far as Obama’s presidential hopes are concerned, are the more than half of Whites who say that Obama is a “risky” choice, and the two-thirds of Whites who see McCain as a “safe” selection. Twenty percent say they believe Obama would give Black Americans extra consideration if he were president. Do you believe that 90 percent of Whites are OK with the idea of a Black president?

Its funny to me that they call Obama a risky vote. He represents both white and black. How can he choose one over the other? He was raised by his grand parents, come on people lets get with the program. We need someone like him thats young and is about making a change for the better. He knows what its like to be poor and rich. He has my vote!!!!!

what about credibility? mccain enventhough hes white is a war veteran he did time for the us. obama is open that he rolls with anti american people. he has been associated with muslim terrorist and he dont deny it! so theirs racism on both sides. have a president that is dont deny himself against this just because he is black. i think people nedd to open their eyes on what would happen if a person with anti american people is president.

The democrats & OBama have goofed and should have settled for a Clinton/Obama ticket. With this winning ticket, Obama will be in the White house and many whites will get comfortable with him there.
Then he will comfortably win and become the first mixed race president!
Now, I find it hard to believe he will never be president and will take a long time before any BLACK gets to contend for the WHITE HOUSE.
I think % of white votes really don’t make a difference because after the mess that Bush made with the US, we all know that McCain don’t need to be in office to make an even bigger mess. Stop being scared of change. If a black man can run this country better than a white man, give credit where credit is due.

I’m white an i like Obama’s way of doing things,,,,,BUT do you want a President that wont salute the American Flag an sing the national anthem, an also said, if he is elected, he will not be sworn in on the Bible that has been used forever, he wants to use a m uslim Bible,to me that is not an American. Think people, black an white alike, the Islimac is trying to get America, so the can run it,look at all your atores, who is running them,

One step forward and then two steps back. This is not a suprising article to me. I dreaded that Whites would help Obama with the nomination and then leave a hanging once he was there. Do I think Whites would have a problem with Obama in office…of course, BUT that does not mean that they shouldnt be willing to try. It couldn’t hurt this country to try something different. Isn’t that what you do when something isn’t working? Try something else? I always thought so. So, to all, Black, White, purple, green, and polka-dots alike, give Obama a chance. This country can’t be any worse than it is now. We have got to stop looking at skin color and look at what this PERSON can do. ABILITY COMES IN ALL COLORS! Just because a person is White does not mean they are more able than a Black or Hispanic person. And like we say, once you go Black, this country just may not want to go back. Obama ‘08!
