Half of White Americans Call Obama A ‘Risky’ Choice

Lost in all the hoopla over Sen. Barack Obama’s historic victory as the first African-American major-party nominee is the reality that a sizable chunk of White America would never support him for president. While racism in politics is a topic people only whisper about or hint at, a new poll sends a loud signal about just how much of a role it could play in the upcoming general election. Sixty percent of all Americans say that race relations in the United States are in sad shape, and nearly a third of Blacks and Whites admit that they harbor feelings of racial prejudice, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll. Even though negative racial attitudes are not as intense as they were in the 1990s, the chasm between the way Whites and Blacks see race is wider than ever, the poll shows. Six in 10 Black folks say that race relations are “not so good” or “poor,” compared with slightly more than half of White folks (53 percent) who see race relations more positively. Last month, 90 percent of Whites say that they would have no problem voting for a Black president; that number has dwindled to about 65 percent who say they would be “entirely comfortable” with an African-American commander in chief. But perhaps some more important numbers, as far as Obama’s presidential hopes are concerned, are the more than half of Whites who say that Obama is a “risky” choice, and the two-thirds of Whites who see McCain as a “safe” selection. Twenty percent say they believe Obama would give Black Americans extra consideration if he were president. Do you believe that 90 percent of Whites are OK with the idea of a Black president?
I don’t think the older white america is ready for Sen Obama, but with no disrespect intended, they ARE the ones that really need to die off and let this nation and the younger generation take it on. As long as there is racism, and people who honestly believe that ONLY a white man can rule this country,( and perpetuate THAT madness) we will be in sad shape. I am voting for Senator Obama. I’m voting for him because he is calling for CHANGE in this country,and because he is a good manwho has shown nothing BUT class since the start. Sen. Obama’s time is here and now. People can’t wait until November! What doesn that tell you??? People who have never voted are registerering to vote, both young and old. This man doesn’t believe in the “White America Rhetoric”, he believes in AMERCIA. White folk don’t have the monopoly on honor,integrity, and hard work.There are PLENTY of people out here who want the best for their families and this country. There are those of us who want to see our country get off the Republican toilet it has been on for the past 8 years.

You would have to be in another if you did not think that race would play a major issue in this race, let’s face it, this is still there game, and they would rather put a man in charge that health isn’t the greatest, age is a factor, and for someone that stands behind the same ideas that we have have for the past 7 1/2 years,if Obama had ran as a Vice President I don’t think that the color issue would be of such big concern, the only thing that I can see that he has going for him is that the younger White Americans are a more color blind than that of thier parents.

As for FACT CHECK, I think you’ve been listening to too much late night talk radio. I’ve heard these stories too; but they happen to be over the same radio stations that broadcast news about crop circles, aliens, and a parallel universe. The problem with this story was they said Clinton and Obama both attending this secret meeting in Virginia a couple of weeks ago, at the same time C-Span (live) was showing both of them on the floor of the Senate.

The American population and Blacks as well have not accepted we as a people have never truly recovered from slavery! It might take another 400 years to heal mentally, financially and spiritually. I hope Mccain wins so those that still believe every thing is fine will be smacked with reality. Barrack will die trying to clean up this mess. I don’t want that for him or his family. Black people come from struggle in this country, while whites have no clue about struggle. So we can survive another deppression, while whites will resort to jumping off of buildings. The economy hitting rock bottom will awaken the sleep. Those that want to blame Blacks and the terrorist for the economy and the dwindling condition of this country. Europeans always have to learn the hard way.

Bush didn’t make a mess of this country single-handedly. We live in a Democratic society, not a Monarchy(Govt 101-think Hitler). I’ve said it before and I will say it again, lets make sure that the Congress (House of Reps and Senate) remains a Democratic majority. Democrats have the majority, but we need a 2/3rd majority to ratify anything. If Obama wins, he will need the support of the Congress to make the effective changes that this country needs. Remember the President of America is a FIGUREHEAD… a FIGUREHEAD. So, please stop getting caught up in this foolishness of divide and conquer or you will continue to be disappointed.

I’m republican, and am desperate for change. I wish there was a strong place for the black moral majority, however, there isn’t. We’ve prayed for change and God has opened the door for Obama. Let’s just get those crazy people out of office and use our brains he has given us for once.

When has America ever taken the “safe” route? We are at War need I say more! To be safe is to elect someone with the same values in regards to our troops coming home & economy. Obama is safe – he is the only true representation of hope, instead of relying on a failing political traditions.
