Half of White Americans Call Obama A ‘Risky’ Choice
June 23rd, 2008Two-thirds of Whites say they see McCain as a “safe” choice

Lost in all the hoopla over Sen. Barack Obama’s historic victory as the first African-American major-party nominee is the reality that a sizable chunk of White America would never support him for president. While racism in politics is a topic people only whisper about or hint at, a new poll sends a loud signal about just how much of a role it could play in the upcoming general election. Sixty percent of all Americans say that race relations in the United States are in sad shape, and nearly a third of Blacks and Whites admit that they harbor feelings of racial prejudice, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll. Even though negative racial attitudes are not as intense as they were in the 1990s, the chasm between the way Whites and Blacks see race is wider than ever, the poll shows. Six in 10 Black folks say that race relations are “not so good” or “poor,” compared with slightly more than half of White folks (53 percent) who see race relations more positively. Last month, 90 percent of Whites say that they would have no problem voting for a Black president; that number has dwindled to about 65 percent who say they would be “entirely comfortable” with an African-American commander in chief. But perhaps some more important numbers, as far as Obama’s presidential hopes are concerned, are the more than half of Whites who say that Obama is a “risky” choice, and the two-thirds of Whites who see McCain as a “safe” selection. Twenty percent say they believe Obama would give Black Americans extra consideration if he were president. Do you believe that 90 percent of Whites are OK with the idea of a Black president?

What white folks are forgetting is that Obama is just as white as he is Black. He was raised by white folk so who’s to say who should be concerned. Though I know it will never happen just look at the credentials and stop worrying about if he might give a brother/sister a break that would be a welcomed change.
I really have a problems with the comments that I am reading. It seems, as though, the majority of them are totally race related both ways when it comes to the vote of the president. Many believe that if Obama is voted into office then that is going to totally benefit Black America and not White America. People let reality hit. Yes, Obama is bi-racial and is considered a black man. That really means nothing for these reasons. America still has the Senate and the House of Representatives that every decision has to go through. Just because he is Black doesn’t mean he is going to break his back to help us as much as you may want to believe he still has to try to get re-elected because the majority of his first term will be to clean up the Bush administration’s messes. Even using what a few of you said Blacks have a bad tendency to only look out for themselves instead of the collective. Just like everyone is saying whites need to quit looking at the skin color so does blacks. I am voting for Obama not because he’s black but McCain has already proven that he sees nothing wrong with Bush and Chaney politics and Obama “claims” to be opposed. Politicians also have a tendency to say what they think the majority wants them to say just to get elected (not saying this is what he is doing) but this has been proven repeatedly. As history has shown you never know what you’re going to get until they are in office (except for Bush since we all knew he was going to use his father’s politics) Kennedy and Clinton surprised everyone, they were white. So please people just because he is black doesn’t mean he will be great he is still a man who still has boundaries. Quit voting for race and just vote for who you feel will do the better job for everyone. For the record Obama is not who was sworn in on a Koran, Minnesota Congressman Keith Ellison is the congressman who swore in on the Koran. Barack Obama is a Christian, and he took the Oath of Office on a Bible.
I personaly think that people are not focused on whats importent for this country, we should not be focusing all of are attention on skin color, even tho having a black man running for president & having the possibilty of becoming the president is a great thing !!!, yet & still we should vote for somone who is focused on everybody’s need’s in this country rich, middle class & poor to the best of there ability, and deffintly someone who is talking about ending this war cause violence never solves any problem. In my opion violence is very contagious, with that being said it looks like Obama is going to be president so lets vote black people and keep are prayers in the sky.
OBAMA 1000% MY VOTE!!
Bush did this…Bush did that. People we live in a Democratic society, not a monarchy (Think Hitler). Let’s make sure that we keep the Cogress (House of Rep and Senate) as a majority. But, we need to make sure that the Congress is @ a 2/3rd majority to ratify anything. If Obama is elected, then he will need the support of the Congress.
Lol again at B.e.t.. So, 50% whites believe obama is a risk based on various reasons, and you see this as racism….lol. But over 90% of blacks will not vote for McCain, and that has nothing to do with racism….lol. My point is simple; racism exist across the board everywhere, and just b/c many of these same whites who are responsible for him being the nominee may support McCain after seeing who obama spends much of his personal time with are not so sure of him, and you call it racism.
I also wish B.E.T. would list specifics reason why Americans should vote for obama, and define the specific change obama is refering to without talking about Bush who is not running. There are specific issues that are very important to me, and obama and I are on totally opposite side of the fence. I am a moderate conservative, and cant get down with any left wing liberals. There is not one thing B.e.T. can point to that shows the senator reaching across the aile working with republicans other than senator lugar, and that nuclear waste issue I think. Talk about specific issues, and please stop making everything racism….geeesh.
RT: I belive that many Republicans like your self will realize that we do need change . And they will vote for Mr Obama , we have the same children dying for a war, we pay for the same high priced gas and are trying to keep the same jobs and houses.
Obama ned 2 b n tha ofice i wouldnt care whut tha racist b****** think towards Obama. I hope he get n it =|
Denise, I respect your post, and wish more would look at issues, and not this other crap B.E.T. plays up.
On a side note, McCain is a conservative, and has always been viewed as the media darlin b/c he blast, and has opposed the President on many fronts. McCain has also know as the maverick, now all of a sudden the media and dems are trying to paint him as a bush lap dog, come on….The guy has a LONG track record of teaming up with dems and repubs to get things done, unlike obama who is voted as the most liberal of dems, which means he only sees politics, etc through a liberal/socialist prism. I cant recall what piece of legislation it was on, but McCain was pretty mad that obama double-crossed him by not teaming up on a bill less than a yr ago I think. But I like your thoughtfulness of voting based on issues, etc, and not this he is black crap.
God is the ultimate decision maker and He will put the man, who is best equipt to do the job as president of the United States. Race may play a role in politics but God Almighty is no respecter
of man and he is the real chief of all creation.
The spirit of god will never fail us. United we
stand divided we fall. So, we the people need to support whomever represents America. We need to
stop complaining and do something positive to help
make this a better world.
AMERIKKKA is a 25,000 square foot mansion built on cardboard boxes and is about to crumble prepare yourself now (GOD) before you ask which room is yours!
Regardless what others (black, white, republicans, democrats, etc) say…some of the black folks voting for Obama are doing so because he is black…SO WHAT!!!(THEY CAN DO WHAT THEY WANT WITH THEIR VOTE AND IT DOESN’T MEAN THEY ARE STUPID)…some white folks are voting for McCain because he is white (WHY AREN’T THEY CALLED STUPID FOR VOTING THIS WAY).
Now, the rest of us are really interested in choosing the best candidates based upon the issues that are important to us. That takes time and research for accurate information. It’s worth taking the time. Each person has one vote to do with as they please…nobodies vote is better than anybody else’s. REMEMBER YOUR VOTE IS YOUR BUSINESS AND NEEDS NO EXPLANATION!!!
Interesting…I wonder if the whites who think blacks would receive “preferential treatment” by a black president feel that way because of the priveleges THEY have received by white presidents? John Stewart on The Daily Show joked that whites feared Obama may put white folks in Slavery if elected…it would never happen, but truly the thought of payback for years of bias and unjust treatment scares some people.
No,I do not think that 90% of white americans are comfortable with a african american president. I also believe that race relations are very poor in this country and are heading back to more traditional times. When you examine the killings of Sean Bell and Amado Dialo(my apologies for the misspelling) and the movement to eliminate affirmative action, these things clearly show white america is trying to eliminate virtually all opportunities and they are not concerned with justice for african americans. It is inconsistent that white america is against affirmative action but is in favor of racial profiling. The issue is that with or without affirmative action, with or without diversity, with or without justice, white america is still fighting against equality for african anericans.
our vote, Gods decision
The poll is very distorted. I don’t trust white americans at all when it comes to their views on Obama. I feel a large chunk of white society is still very racist and I can’t foresee them voting for Obama in large numbers. It is very important that he gets overwhelming support from blacks, latinos, and native americans as well as asians in this election. We’ve seen this same old playbook from white america before. Publicly, they say one thing and then their prejudice shines through and they do the opposite.
The Facts And Denise I agree with you 100%. You two seem to be the only ones not being blinded by race.
Yet again B.E.T brings out the racism, I dont know what their point is by doing this, I find it very stupid, A while ago there was another racist post i saw but i could not even post, maybe it was too good for B.E.T but anyways the point remains that they always bring out the racism in anything.
Obama is the Anti-Christ! You better find the Lord, the end is near!
Blacks are scared to death Obama will win. It will be so much harder to play the perpetual victim. But of course… you can always call him an Uncle Tom, he is half white.
Racism is very real in America and only those blinded by ignorance pretend otherwise. People who say I don’t see color are LIARS.
