Half of White Americans Call Obama A ‘Risky’ Choice

June 23rd, 2008

Two-thirds of Whites say they see McCain as a “safe” choice
Obama

Lost in all the hoopla over Sen. Barack Obama’s historic victory as the first African-American major-party nominee is the reality that a sizable chunk of White America would never support him for president. While racism in politics is a topic people only whisper about or hint at, a new poll sends a loud signal about just how much of a role it could play in the upcoming general election. Sixty percent of all Americans say that race relations in the United States are in sad shape, and nearly a third of Blacks and Whites admit that they harbor feelings of racial prejudice, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll. Even though negative racial attitudes are not as intense as they were in the 1990s, the chasm between the way Whites and Blacks see race is wider than ever, the poll shows. Six in 10 Black folks say that race relations are “not so good” or “poor,” compared with slightly more than half of White folks (53 percent) who see race relations more positively. Last month, 90 percent of Whites say that they would have no problem voting for a Black president; that number has dwindled to about 65 percent who say they would be “entirely comfortable” with an African-American commander in chief. But perhaps some more important numbers, as far as Obama’s presidential hopes are concerned, are the more than half of Whites who say that Obama is a “risky” choice, and the two-thirds of Whites who see McCain as a “safe” selection. Twenty percent say they believe Obama would give Black Americans extra consideration if he were president. Do you believe that 90 percent of Whites are OK with the idea of a Black president?

WTF??? really listen to yourselves….”Twenty percent say they believe Obama would give Black Americans extra consideration if he were president.” So that means that all previous presidents in the history of America (YES ALL WERE WHITE)has been giving extra consideration to the White Americans . Since that has been said (and it is true especially if those 20% really believe what they said about obama)Then what is the problem with black people getting four measley years of extra consideration? isn’t it past due? Now remember this is based of your terms that you set (20% white america). Now as i state my opinion because i dont believe it to be true @ all (the 20% statement)that is just showing how racist america is Its 2008 and the only differnce is that racism is much more camoflauged tha nbefore so its harder to predict but knowingly available world wide.

This just goes to show how we has African Americans are still perceived by White America. They consider him “risky” due to the fact that he may give Black voters more preference. How long has White America been given preference? Are they afraid that now more than ever may be the time that African Americans will come to take back what has rightfully been theirs for quite some time now? We have worked very hard to get where we are and still do this day those people do not want us to prevail.

For all the white folks who think Obama will give extra attention to black folks if he is elected. I think being that he is half black and half white maybe just maybe he will treat everyone equal . Wow how about that!

seschris Said on

noni:

I agree with you…equal treatment…what a NOVEL concept in America!!!

UMlaw Said on

Yes, Noni i concur. Obama is 1/2 white and 1/2 black. His mother is White and he was raised by his White grandmother. Stop with the race.

Plus, the President is only 1/3 of the total government. It’s not as if he (obama, or mccain) can just make things happen for anyone without checks and balances. Read some books on government.

I would like for Obama to win but in my heart I think Mcslain will win. I don’t trust the gov as well as a single human being. White america is shady, corrupt, evil, and they can lie with a straight face. Now Bet want’s to put this rumor out about “Half of White Americans Call Obama A ‘Risky’ Choice”. Let the games begin…huh…Here comes the NWO soon..

I truly believe white Americans are fed up just as we are with the economy and our leaders. We as Americans are suffering while our government is funding a war that there is no end to. Obama to me means hope. If things keep going the way they are now there will be no middle class, just the poor and the rich. Of course many will not vote for Obama because of his skin color. And I don’t see Obama giving African Americans any special treatment. I see him as the type of leader that will look out for those that have been looked over by the republicans, and thats the middle and lower class. To me, McCain is just an older Bush because they agree on policies. There’s no change there.

Sparkle Jones Said on

I’m just wondering why we aren’t hearing from the hip-hop community like we did when Bush was running against Kerry? What happened to Vote or Die?? Where are Jesse and Al on this topic? Are they supporting Obama?? Where is Diddy and Jay-Z and Russell Simmons? Where do they stand? Does Obama have their endorsement??

Let’s be serious, Mr.Obama is going to help bridge racial gaps in America. He represents both white and black.
Regarding to what Bob Marley said when he was asked whether he was prejudiced against white people. He replied, “I don’t have prejudice against myself. My father was a white and my mother was black. Them call me half-caste or whatever. Me don’t dip on nobody’s side. Me don’t dip on the black man’s side nor the white man’s side. Me dip on God’s side, the one who create me and cause me to come from black and white.”
So black and white in America vote for the real man ( OBAMA ).
Mr.Obama is truly qualified to run the country and he is a great symbol of hope.If Obama is elected,he is going do a better job.
we are just tired of the wars caused by Mr.Bush & co.I’m sure that America will be a better Country a through Mr.Obama. nd the will be through
Goodluck & God Bless you Mr. Obama.

That’s a great point “Sparkle Jones”.

Lot’s of high profile black people seem to lack the ‘courage’ to proactively support Obama.

Then again, maybe they don’t, it’s their perogative.

And is it really fair for use to assume that all black pop-stars are gonna be for Obama!

And let’s face it, alot of Americans don’t seem truly ‘fed-up’ with the Bush approach enough to go for Obama!

If it was so hard for Clinton’s followers to go with Obama, what can Obama supoorters really expect from the rest of white America.

BET is a racist organization that pretends to be a voice for the black community. Really it is a forum for curious whites, Asians, Africans, and others, etc… to peek into the minds of blacks responding and venting to BET’s always racially charged illiterate articles. Unfortunately, those curious onlookers leave this site believing that the posters here represent the black community. That is far from the truth. This forum represents a lot of things but not the black community. While there are some real posts…there are many posts from people whose only purpose is to spew racial insults. Sometimes posters are using other posters names in an effort to create more drama. Sometimes posters are pretending to be a certain race to incite arguments and more drama. Some posters are just bored and want to hide behind their computers and insult black America. The black community comes in all shapes, sizes, and intellects…therefore BET could never incorporate even a real representative sample of the black community because some blacks would never stoop so low as to engage in discussion with some of the poorly written, racially biased, emotionally charged articles posted on this website and called “NEWS”.

BET is a joke!!!!!!!

For those that still live in time they will
probably die in that time. It is not what
whites or blacks want in my eye sight it is
what God decides that makes the differences
I personally think (OBAMA)need to be our next
president, this country need a change and
i believe this man is the one that can do
just that.
My hat is off to you OBAMA and goodluck. I
am going to try much as, I can to get the
people to vote for whom is right and what
this country need.

Terell Said on

There is no way that 90% will embrace a black President. I am from the south and have been hated on by white people for so long just because I am trying to get a good education and I happen to be better at it than their kids. If they treat me like I don’t deserve to share the same air, how do you think they feel about him?
