HBCU Makes Overweight Students Take Fitness Course

A controversial graduation requirement from Lincoln University mandating all overweight students  to take a health and fitness course is causing a serious debate between students, health officials and legal scholars.

Lincoln University, a historically Black university near Philadelphia, requires students who have a Body Mass Index (BMI) above 30 to take the health and fitness course which consists of  aerobics, weight training and nutrition.

BMI is a measurement health officials use to determine obesity.

It is believed Lincoln University is the only is school in the nation to require overweight students to take a health class.

There is a petition calling for the university to get rid of the health class but the school is holding its ground. What do you think? Good idea or is Lincoln discriminating against overweight students?

AS A 62 YEAR OLD REGISTERED NURSE WHO HAS STRUGGLED WITH WEIGHT ISSUES FOR MANY YEARS, I CERTAINLY SEE THE VALUE OF TEACHING STUDENTS, ALL STUDENTS, HEALTHY LIVING PRACTICES. EVERY PERSON WHO CONSIDERS THEMSELVES TO BE EDUCATED SHOULD HAVE A BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF OBESITY AND IT’S RELATIONSHIP TO HEALTH AND PERFORMANCE. ANY ADVANTAGE ACQUIRED BY RECEIVING A COLLEGE EDUCATION IS VERY SHORT LIVED WITHOUT ALSO CONQUERING OBESITY. HUMAN BEINGS WERE NOT CREATED TO BE OBESE AND OVERWEIGHT. MOBILITY AND EXERCISE IS SOMETHING THAT MUST BE AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE IN ONE’S LIFESTYLE.

This is a topic that does not even require discussion. With all the obesity in America, I think this program should be in every school. There is nothing wrong with teaching and helping people stay fit and healthy. I have struggled with my weight for years and I wish my school had this program. Maybe people just need that extra little push for a healthier lifestyle. Growing up, some of us don’t understand the importance for fitness and eating healthy. With heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and other preventable diseases on the rise, maybe we all need a little more guidance and teaching when it comes to our health.

Isn’t that a form of discrimination? Why aren’t the smaller statesque student made to take the same class. There are alot of skinny people who have the same illnesses: diabetic, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc. Just because someone is skinny does not make them immune to such diseases, strokes or heartattacks. People should stop trying to shove their opinions down other people’s throat. If obese students have to take the class so should all the skinny ones. Maybe they will learn not to be bulimic or other eating disorders.
