Health: Sleep is Just What the Arteries Need
December 24th, 2008Sleep is just what the arteries need. Those who get an extra hour sleep at night are less likely to get calcium deposits in their arteries, which stiffen over time, a new study shows. ”We don’t know why there is an association,” said Diane Lauderdale, associate professor of health studies at the University of Chicago Medical Center, who led the study. “And until we know why, we can’t tell whether it is a causal association.” The report was published in the Dec. 24/31 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. Lauderdale and her colleagues followed a group of young adults for years, studying their heart arteries from a number of angles, HealthNews reports. “The latest report linked the sleeping habits of 495 participants, ages 35 to 47, with the incidence of artery calcification, measured by CT scans. Calcium deposits can make the coronary arteries less flexible and ultimately lead to heart disease. None of the participants had detectable calcium deposits when the study began, but five years later, 61 (12.3 percent) did,” according to HealthNews.

Could it be because their bodies were are not using the calcium efficiently due to a lack of vitamin D? Or maybe just too much calcium? Just how much is enough anyway: And can these calcium deposits be responsible for osteoarthritis? Is it that if I sleep more I won’t have this problem?
Right now I have this along my spine (X-rays show) and doctors say osteo is the culprit, but I have taken a supplement with Vitamin D for years, which I might add, I was told would guard against just such an eventuality.
I have lots of questions, which of course I will put to my doctor, but I want to say that you people need to give more information or do more investigations into this issue. The results of the study did not say whether these people took supplements or anything. Just that the doctors “followed” them and found that more sleep equals less deposits – was it because more sleep allowed the body to process calcium better in the system? I think they need to be more specific or you (BET) need to investigate more/better!!.
