Hip-hop Mayor’s Sex-text Nightmare About To Get Worse

July 11th, 2008

The question is whether Kwame Kilpatrick was a frequent philanderer.
As the defense team for Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick prepares to beat back charges that he lied about his relationship with his longtime chief of staff, prosecutors are planning to roll out a whole new string of sexy text messages showing that cheating on his wife was a way of life. The so-called “Hip-hop Mayor” is currently facing a single perjury charge – that he lied under oath regarding his alleged affair with Christine Beatty. The case against Kilpatrick centers largely around the numerous sexually explicit text messages he sent to Beatty, who served as his chief of staff from 2002 until January 2008 when she resigned amid the scandal. But the bulldog-tough D.A. in the case, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy, is picking through a mound of other Kilpatrick text messages – five year’s worth – hoping to find other evidence that Beatty wasn’t the only woman the married mayor was seeing on the side. “I’ll put the defense on notice, we’re about to file an amended warrant and complaint to amend the counts that relate to conspiracy as it relates to testimony about having a sexual relationship with the codefendant,” Assistant Prosecutor Robert Moran told The Detroit Free Press. “We’re going to amend to add the language ‘and others.’ We’ve uncovered other evidence.” The newspaper recently reported that a review of Kilpatrick’s trial testimony uncovered proof of additional affairs. “In addition to denying an affair with Beatty, the mayor denied having sex with an unidentified Jamaican woman at a barbershop,” it states. “One of the mayor’s former bodyguards had also accused him of meeting a woman at the Lofts apartments in Detroit for a late-night liaison. Kilpatrick was not asked directly about that allegation at trial.” As one might expect, lawyers for Kilpatrick and Beatty are perturbed. James Thomas, who represents Kilpatrick, expressed disappointment with the prosecutors’ plan of attack but would not elaborate on the revised case, according to the Free Press. Mayer Morganroth, Beatty’s attorney, call Moran’s comments “outrageous.” District Judge Ronald Giles has yet to rule on whether the content of the 14,000 text messages will become part of the public court file. “But they don’t even care,” Morganroth said of prosecutors. “They just want to get stuff out there any way they can to taint the jury. It’s outrageous but they do it anyway, whether it’s true or not, whether the information is privileged or whether it’s sealed or not.”

To me if you must say this all not called for but what the mayor did was a long time ago and maybe he felt the need to cheat on his wife because she was doing something. Wrong at home but truly all this needs to stop because it again is so not called for eventhought it was wrong let the past be the past.

UMlaw said on July 11th, 2008

It goes beyond him cheating on his wife…that in and of itself is not illegal (immoral, maybe). HE LIED UNDER OATH!! And he used his power to get people fired, and hired. He isn’t worthy of a public position.

I wish they would just leave Kwame the hell alone! Honestly folks how many other politicians have done this much and worse and it doesn’t get run into the ground like this has. If Kwame was a manager at McDonad’s and did the same thing (cheat) no one would care. If he owned a nightclub everyone would expect him to; if he was a sherriff no one would care. It’s not even thay people “care” now it’s that people love drama and love to see others persecuted.

I would like to say thank you to all those who have currently posted, about Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, and have not talked down on him, like so many that live in the state of Michigan, especially those in the Suburbs. Detroit has a wonderful Mayor who has done a lot for the city. Yes he has done some things wrong but how many politicians have not. They have been attacking this man since he stepped into office, and it is ridiculous. Mayor Kilpatrick is a Mayor who is not afraid to speak his mind and don’t care if you like it or not, that is why he is called so many names especially Thug, Monkey, King Kong, Pimp name it they have called him, and some people think it is so funny and cute. I could say more, but I am going to end right now, I just wanted to say thank-you to all those who have said leave him alone, and not talked down on him.

Loving Detroit, no matter what the circumstances.

If he only lied under oath about cheating on his wife, I wouldn’t even care much about that, because they shouldn’t have been asking him about that. (Just like with Bill and Monica.) What’s sad is that the s-e-x is all the media coverage focuses on. There are no details in this story (or most others) about the REAL issues: possible misuse of city funds, the personnel issues you mention, and whatever else is the real problem with his governance.

What alot of you are forgetting is this: whenever a black person–especially a black MAN is in a power position, people will do ANYTHING to bring him down. No, I’m not from Detroit but I’m a black woman-and we should all know that we have to work EXTRA hard to keep our noses clean if we want to accomplish anything in life. Ok, so he may have done some good things for the city: noone disputes that. But he WAS busy texting inappropriate msgs to a woman OTHER than his wife, often when he SHOULD have been working, on the taxpayers’ dime. Anything he has done that even APPEARS to be wrong is going to be blown out of proportion, and yes I find him at fault because he should have KNOWN BETTER. If you don’t have morals or hold yourself accountable for the trouble YOU get yourself into, then it’s your OWN fault when your drama comes back to bite you. The last mayor in Philly (my hometown) was also a black man. The DA and the Feds did their best to catch him doing something–ANYthing wrong. Bugged his office, interrogated his staff…they did charge a few of his staff members with crimes but ultimately the mayor was never charged with anything. You know why? If you don’t do anything wrong they CAN’T find sh– that doesn’t exist. So hey-when WE remember that WE are held to a higher standard, WE’ll be better off. Just ask big-mouthed Jesse Jackson…

Ms. Confused said on July 11th, 2008

Why is constantly being called detroit’s “Hip-Hop Mayor”? Does he have a rap album out that I haven’t heard of? Or is it becuz he’s young and black? BET needs to stop it! And WTH does his ‘messin around’ have 2 do with how he run’s the city? Or this current case goin on?

D. Alexander said on July 11th, 2008

Kwame you have been HAD brotha. What a shame that you would solicit yourself like this and philander around like a “dog” belittling and embarassing your wife, kids and family. Another stereotypical attitude brought forth as truth to those who look upon African American men as unfaithful, dishonest and not worthy to be in the position that you were in.

The truth will come out and we as adults must be held accountable for our actions, no matter what position of authority we are in or who we are. I am sure you will be made an example for others.

Another set back for African Americans because we are (all) “unfortunately” judged by this type of behavior.

Gary In Pismo said on July 11th, 2008

The mayor is in a difficult position. One would hope that the charges will prove false, but if they don’t then he will have to take responsibility for his actions, apologize to all those he hurt, offended and lied to and be about the business of rebuilding his life and (if his wife agrees) his marriage. I wish the brother the best. Hopefully its all lies. We don’t need another brother in leadership falling to something as base as not being able to control his sexual appetites. If a man knows that he likes having more than one lady on his, then stay single. And if you do something stupid, as we all do from time to time, tell the truth. Its an issue of character.

Second of all he’s taking money from the city. Third he’s married with children. Kwame hasn’t done nothing for the city but make us look bad. All the big projects he’s done have been downtown detroit which is nice by the way, BUT WHAT ABOUT OR NEIGHBORHOODS KWAME U PUT ALL THE MONEY DOWNTOWN BUT NOT IN THE HOODS WHICH REALLY NEED IT. He got our police f**ked up layn off a lot of they jobs. So of couse theres more crime. By they way I didn’t vote for kwame neither time. So I never like him. It wasn’t because he young sh*t I’m 23 its because I didn’t think he would be right for mayor, and I was right.

I moved from Detroit because of the chaos that is an intricate part of the culture there. Nonetheless, I think it is important for us to firmly evaluate this man’s lifestyle because the taxpayer’s dollars are firmly supporting his antics. Of course, we can easily say, “This is his life; we need to stay out of it, etc.” However, remember that it is the people of Detroit’s tax paying dollars that pay for his lifestyle; thus, Detroiters have a right to know what their public servant (a servant that they elected) is doing. The fact that he lied under oath makes it worst because it demonstrates his lack of integrity. I live in Boston, Massachusetts, and the mayor here is a worthy one that sincerely cares about his city. A lady made a mistake and hit Mayor Menino with her car while he was bike riding, and you know what he said? He told her to not worry about it, that he would personally pay for the damage on her car–and HE was hurt [not badly, but he was hurt nonetheless]! That, to me is an example of a public figure that sincerely cares about the people he serves. I am honored to be a resident of Massachusetts, and am glad I moved from Detroit because it was crippling my intellect and destroying my spirit. Remember, the politicians are here to serve the public…not act in their own best interests.

How can you use the adage that because he’s black their trying to bring him down or other people have done this and gotten away with it. This thought process is not right and doesn’t make it right. The Mayor of Detroit has set a bad example in Leadership, Marriage, and being someone the youth of today can look-up too. I thought this man could have been the Next Obama. Look at the President of the United States, he’s been doing Bad behavior since the year of 2000. The govenor of New York State, do you honestly think this kind of behavior is right. The whole city of Detroit is swirling around from the Mayor,to City Council, to News Anchorwomen. People seems to think that it ok to not follow rules or guidelines that are set before them, we have lost Structure, Morals, and VALUES, seems to be a thing of the PAST!!!!!!!!!

First let me get this out of the way. Kwame was wrong for cheating on his wife we all agree. It was a very stupid thing to do. But let us not forget that we wouldn’t even know about this if it wasn’t for that “PUNK” lawyer Stafani, who represented the police officers, for leaking this to the “Press” in the first place. He had agreed in private not to do this. Yet this “WHITE PUNK’S” intentions were to do this all along. Kwame got punked by this punk and we gleefully jump down Kwame’s throat. Kwame is suppose to be smarter than this, but apparently he isn’t. In no other city does the media, instead of reporting the news of this matter, is the engine behind it. Only in Detroit. Black politicians wake up. You can’t do what the white man does. HAVEN’T YOU LEARNED THAT YET. He might be the mayor of a black city but he’s not the one who truly runs it. He didn’t play ball the way those who run this city wanted him too and now he’s paying the price. We can’t be blind to understanding how this system really works, or are we?

Terca said on July 12th, 2008

Please my people, don’t squabble over the Mayor’s morals (or lack thereof). The question is: Did he lie under oath? Answer: It seems to be YES. That is currently the only charge. Please let’s forget black treatment verses white treatment and ask ourselves about the law verses lawlessness. The mayor knew he would be held to a higher standard than his counterparts. This is not new territory for him. The hounding started BEFORE he was elected and it is wrong. None the less, the ONLY question remains, Did he lie?

When will someone tell Public, Famous, Black people that they are being prayed upon to make wrong choices? That they are being looked at harder than anyone else? The sooner these realities are realized, the sooner Black men in such positions will stop ruining themselves.

What is starting to really concern me is, why do we as African Americans continue to excuse the actions of our elected officials? Why is it that we don’t think we should be held to a higher standard? Aren’t we worthy of at least having moral, intelligent , law-abiding officials representing us? We justify their actions by saying, “It’s just the white man/media trying to take him down” or “If he was white, you wouldn’t be hearing/reading about it like this.” The sad fact is, Detroiters elected — not once, but twice — an immoral man to represent them. I try to understand his election the first time, the mentality that it was going to be so cool to have this young, “hip-hop” African American as mayor. But to re-elect him AFTER all the scandals — the stripper who turned up dead after an appearance at the mayor’s mansion (which is funded by YOUR tax dollars); the “disappearance” of her cohorts; the numerous lawsuits as a result of illegal hirings/firings, etc., etc. — is beyond reasoning. Then to add insult to injury, a city the size of Detroit, with hefty personal city income taxes deducted from your paychecks AND three booming casinos, re-elected a mayor who outsourced city jobs and then told you all that you had to pay for your own trash to be picked up!!
Even though I re-located to Las Vegas from Detroit eight years ago, I was so very proud to tell any and everybody that I was from Detroit…..until Detroit and its mayor began making regular appearances on CNN! Now I pray none of my co-workers or neighbors remember that I’m from Detroit. The same is true of the large Detroit population at my church and the Las Vegas “Detroiters Club.” Although the vast majority of my family and friends left Detroit after the mayor’s re-election, I am still deeply saddened that the remaining population of Detroit does not realize that they deserve so much more.
For those who continue to say that the mayor’s “personal life” has nothing to do with his political life, STOP IT! You’re telling too much about your own character/integrity! A man who lies, cheats and steals make a good leader? Really!!

How many of you know the law?It matters in a court of law if you lie on the witness stand!! If it were you or I common folk it wouldn’t take this long for us to be in jail.No I don’t care who he sleeps with that’s between him,his god and his wife, but when you lie in court and use the hard working tax payers money in an already struggling city to cover/hush up the truth you (Mr.Kilpatrick) should get what you deserve by law.And people if your not from the city of Detroit or the state of Michigan you have no clue how this has impacted our city/state.”keep hope alive Kilpatrick”lol. And now that it’s time to elect again soon hopefully the people of Detroit will understand that a skin color doesn’t mean it’s the right person for the job.Do your homework and try to elect someone that will move the city forward into the future and not backwards in scandel. We as a city have grown and alot of new things have taken place but you can’t give him all the credit for those things alot of things were in the works when Mr Archer was in office so you can’t say he has done all of these things that have come to pass in the city. Now the truth will come out since new witnesses that were supposed to be there when the incident occur will now testify,we will see if they disapear just like Miss Green did for telling the truth.(Mr.Kilpratrick)LOL…..

i’m not a political science major but can’t this kwame be impeached or fired by the city council. can’t they have an emergency action to get him out quickly before he damages the city further. he’s already done too much damage to the office in general and to detroit’s reputation in particular.

That’s right Greg, and Stefani has been in hiding ever since then. I don’t know why charges are not being brought against Stefani, he knew what he was doing, and was paid to do it.
He held on to those text messages until after the trial, and used them as Bribery/Blackmail, to settle this case.
Kwami did not give in to the offer made by the officer, and he also wanted to appeal the decision, which 8 million dollars was awarded by a jury full of Suburbans.

To be honest we all do dirt, and at the same time when your in a powerful position in a powerful city you just have to do your best to let go of your sinful ways because it’s more people out trying to expose all your dirt and get a nice paycheck doing it too.

Well anybody as STUPID as Kilpatrick does not DESERVE to run the city. In 2000 I was younger than him when I was elected to our City’s Commission. And even at that age I wasn’t stupid enough to partake in sexual conversations via municipal telecommunications devices. He thought he was longer than the long arm of the law. And he was wrong.

Using tax payers dollars for your personal sins is unacceptable. Parties, strippers, paying bodyguards go arrange meetings, serve as alibis, unfair hiring and firing, etc… the list goes on and on.

And then you see all these people supporting him. WTH is that about!??

This is what’s wrong with Black people today. We focus all our energies on the wrong CAUSES. Are you crazy!? Malcom and Martin didn’t march and die for HIM. Rosa didn’t sit down so he could use his power to abuse women! Thurgood Marshall didn’t integrate schools so he could be educated and then act ignorant! And W.E.B. didn’t fight for us to have the right to vote in order for us to waste it on this type of trash!

WAKE UP PEOPLE!

I live in a suburb of Detroit. I agree that Kwame Kilpatrick has done a lot for the city. No one can argue that. The problem is not with him as a mayor, per se. The problem is using city funds any way he chooses. That has included high priced vacations, hotel rooms, huge wage increases for family and friends, etc. When will we, as black people, stop backing one another in wrong doing just because the offender is black? Wrong is wrong and that is the bottom line. We will never be the people we were chosen to be until we say enough is enough. So what if other politicians sleep around, that does not make it right!! Grow up, if you can’t be faithful don’t get married. There is no law that says you must marry. When all hell breaks loose around you, take a moment and examine yourself. If you are the cause, remove yourself from the equation and allow people to heal. Kwame needs to step down, not because I say so. But because it is the right thing to do. He has served his purpose and needs to find another line of work. He has become a joke to our young people, not someone to look up to. Just another brother with a criminal record, what a shame!!!!!
