It is a tragic event when a child, or anyone for that matter loses their life due to a deranged, sick person, who doesn’t value theirs. Secondly: Sunshine-Whoever you are, you are a very inhuman individual. If you can make a comment saying: “Who Cares” when a life has been taken, then you are the type of person who needs to be watched. If you show that little regards for human life, what prevents you from going out and doing the same thing???

I think that people like Sunshine have nothing else better to do than to try to get a rise out of people who actually have an opinion. I think the real issue that needs to be addressed is this mother’s lack of supervision. The article says that she rounded a corner to get her son. Why would she even need to round a corner to go to where her four year old is playing? I don’t think it has anything to do with who runs this country, but more PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY!!! Whenever something bad happens that possibly could have been avoided people look for someone else to blame. I feel that PRAYER is the only answer for the world we live in today!

That is awful. If he did run into the “crossfire” as the police said (I don’t believe a word of it–they are just covering their asses), there would never have been crossfire to begin with if the police had done their jobs and picked this guy up the day before. The mom even stated that the guy shot him deliberately. Now, to state the obvious–I know kids have a tendency to stray into places where they shouldn’t be when you aren’t looking, but did she really intentionally let a four year old play in the street without supervision? I found it a little disturbing because the article states that she “heard” a series of shots, and THEN ran to FIND her son around the corner. With things the way they are, there is no way in hell that I would let my four year old child be out of my sight, especially given what she had seen the day before. That is one harsh lesson. I am so sorry to hear about that. I live in Deleware County, right outside of Philly, but I have lived in East Camden for many years and I know how terrible it is there and I know who messed up the police force is there. I have a 18 month old grandbaby that lives on Everette Street and I pray for him all the time. I wish his mother would give him to me so that I can provide a better place for him to live besides Camden. My prayers go out to you and I know that if you lean to the Lord He will guide you through this heartbreaking ordeal.

As someone who has three children raise in East Camden and now a grandchild I know the neighborhood mood too well. For years I felt a generation is lost its conscience and its heart. Having witnessed several murders I feel the young brothers can’t learn to just let go of a situation(being disrepected). And the police are always too slow to respond. I thought the same thing about “rounding the corner”, but I didn’t comment because hindsight is 20/20, I think we all have done something that made us say “did I really do that?”, maybe the child was with someone one else. Family members talk about me when I visit their homes because I don’t let my children (5 and 2) out of my sight too long (in the house) and I don’t dare let them go outside if I can’t watch them. I can’t trust that someone will watch over them like I would, it only takes a second for someone or something to hurt your babies–and sometimes it doesn’t matter if we are with them.

I can’t imagine the pain Stephanie is going through, I will definitely say a prayer for her and her family, nothing but GOD will be able to heal her, and I don’t know what to say about that inhumane person that shot that baby, he will get what he deserves, one way or the other.

its sad, but why was the baby playing in the street in the first place. mothers need to start watching they’re kids a little mor carefully. its not how it used to be in the 70s when kids can play in the street all day and night without having to worry about shooting like now. yes, indeed the police was wrong for not showing up in time, but the mother was also wrong for having her child in the streets playing at age 4.

This one literally drove me to tears. I have a 4 yr old son and 3 year old daughter and I cant even imagine someone gunning down my babies right in my face. They would have to take me too. These are perilous times…we can’t leave 4 yr ols outside to play….even with the supervision of an older sibling…those ays ende in like the 1950’s.These things are going on everyday somewhere. I used to get irked by how much time kids spend on the net…playing video games or in front of cable t.v. …..but horrible stories like this make me think it might be advisable after all.

I feel so sorry for this woman and her child. I can’t even begin to perceive how she is feeling. To lose my 16-month old baby now would tear my heart out. And this woman who had raised her child to the age of 4, only to lose him to such a horrific incident….i just can’t…

As a mother who also lost a child in a violent way, I totally understand how thi youg mother feels. We should pray for her so that God can give her the strength and the courage to deal with the lost and all thats coming after. Its going to be hard for her and she won’t understand why this happened to her but with the power of God and family and friends she will get thru it. I lost my daughter in a violent manner about 5yrs ago and I still feel it as if it just happened. First and foremost, let me say that my heart truly hurts for her but, let’s not forget the fact that this child was outside by himself at four years old playing in the street. Living right outside of Philly and working in Philly there are too many times where I see children unattended playing in the middle of the street or either walking the streets by themselves. This is another reminder of how many of these young mothers need to wake up and realize that there is real danger out there (especially in Philly and Camden). Unfortunately, a lot of them are so ignorant that they don’t think about or care about there childrens well being. I believe that a lot of these incidents could be avoided if they had there parents with them to protect them at all times. Not saying that it was her fault that her child got shot but, it may have been a different scenario if she had been there to protect him. As far as the police, we can blame them for a lot of things but, people protecting their own children shouldn’t be one of them.

I have a four year old niece that lives with me and I guarantee she does not go out anywhere alone, unless it’s in my gated backyard and it’s with a playmate…and hell I live in Alabama. However, I will give the mother the benefit of the doubt and believe that maybe she was watching him, but went in to call the police. I have to believe that. Either way, it is a tragic story and my prayers are with her through this process.

It don’t matter that this young mother let her son go outside to play because where I live we let our kids go out to play alone because someone is always watching the kids. They know who done it so it no longer matters that she let her son play outside I let my 2 sons (2&8) play out in the yard by themselves alot and I constantly peek out to make sure everything is ok like this young mother. I blame the police for not responding they played with her child’s life and they are the one’s who took it they will respond quickly to a drug bust, black man riding in a nice car late at night. This is very very tragic and i think that the 911 operator or supervisor during that shift when the mother made the warning call should lose their jobs. This goes to show us as African Americans what the law enforcement think of the black neighborhoods by allowing such acts to take place. This has got to stop…The dispatcher and police department are just as well the blame for this baby being killed. Why did they not respond when she called before? I dont think the BET article would have read that at all OREGON8…If the man was riding a bike carrying a machine gun he should have been arrested and this would have never happened. First off i really feel bad for this mother. No mother wants to their child to leave before them, but then to to watch their death is unreal. Secon doff, I can understand she is grieving but where is thematernal instinct,. One he’s not old enough to get his self out of the street and two, I’m a mother of five, and if I knew someone was riding around in the neighborhood with a machine gun or any type of gun for that matter. we have to do better protecting our kids and I know she’s young a we make mistakes but if she had to go and run to see where he was that baby was too far. I truly have sympathy for any parent that loses their child in a act of violence, but we are to look at situation at hand. #1 The parent observed an individual on the street the day before with an automatic weapon. #2 She called the police, but got no arrest or response positive for the safety and security of her child. #3 The mother knowing the danger at hand allowed her child to exit the home with the threat still being imminent in the neighborhood. #4 Why is the child around the corner playing at the age and not in the visual sight of a parent or guardian?

Let’s all look at the facts and understand that all have a responsibility to society. The police to locate the subject on the bike and give a clear effort to locate the subject in order to determine their danger status. The parent, as a protector of the child to insure their safety at all cost, even if that means the child would have to stay inside a day or two. The neighbors in general because I am sure that they observed the subject as well and the wonder is if they called as well.

Truly no one individual to blame, but several including the parent of this child. Let us decide if the safety of our children and family more important or allowing the child to do what they want and not having to listen to complaining from the child more important?

I am very sadden about this and my prayers goes out to you and your family. You done the right thing and sometimes we want to blame ourselves but, the truth is we live in such a cruel world that the only people we have to rely on is GOD. Again, take care and may God give you all the comfort and strenght you need and I hope the little comment that was left “who cares” didn’t mean to say that.

Honestly this story is very, very sad and disturbing. Here’s what I think:
1. I feel really bad for the mother because not only did she lose her child, but she witnessed it and probably felt so helpless. That is so sad…
2. As a mother of a two year old, once I seen the guy with the rifle and called the cops, me and my child would be in the house. We would not still be playing outside. Period.
3. I think this could’ve of been preventing in two ways: 1-Cops responding to the call, but also 2. Mother getting her child inside the house after calling cops
