Innocent Man Cleared of Rape Charges Thanks to DNA Testing
May 30th, 2008DNA frees a man who spent 14 years in prison for a rape he didn’t commit
Dean Cage, who spent nearly 14 years in an Illinois prison for a rape he didn’t commit, is now a free man, thanks to DNA testing. The 41-year-
old Cage was released from prison late Tuesday after Chief Criminal Court Judge Paul Biebel dismissed the conviction at the request of prosecutors. Cage was locked up in 1994 after a tipster saw a police sketch of a rapist and led police to Cage. The 15-year-old victim also identified Cage as the man who raped her after a detective investigating the rape took her to Cage’s job. Despite having an alibi from his fiancée, and the lack of any physical evidence tying him to the crime, Cage was convicted and sentenced to 40 years behind bars. Cage’s mother, Jerley Cage, said, “They stole my son’s life. They stole mine too.” The Innocence project is now calling on Gov. Rod Blagojevich to grant Cage a pardon, clearing the way for him to receive $150,000 in compensation from the state. See what Cage had to say, and then tell us if you believe the $150,000 compensation is enough money for 14 years he spent in prison. Watch the video here.

That’s worse way to mistake someone of doing then he spent nearly 14 years behind bars I would’ve been devestated. Knowing deep down in your heart that it was not you that probably hurts bad. yeah and 150,000 AINT ENOUGH but there’s a great god that knew he would make if through and touch his heart i bet he’s so so so so happy!!!!!!!!!!! I feel ya brotha much love.
man dats mess up i think dey him more than money
HELL NO I DON’T THINK THIS IS SNOUGH MONEY AND YOU MEAN TO TELL ME IT TOOK 14 YEARS OF THIS MAN LIFE FOR THEM TO FIND OUT THEY HAD THE WRONG MAN.NO THAT ENOUGH FOR HIM
There is no amount of money that can replace all the time he lost! @%*#$* are the lowest on the todumpole(subject to harsh treatment like sodomy) in prison. His quality of life was taken from him and $150,000 won’t replace that!
how you gonna ask is a 150,000 a enough for a man who spent 14 years of his life in jail no amount of money will replace the time he lost with his family and forbid if he had kids i think he should get 150,000 for every year he been locked up
Now lets do the math $150,000.00 for 14 years of your life the state of IL. paid Mr.Cage $10,714.28 for every year he spent locked up— that is BS I would sue but I am sure he had to sign a wavier of some type!!! The sad fact of this is that it take place more then we know!
Well there you go, another black man in prison for something he did not do.Im sure that there are plenty of our african american men that are behind bars that needs to be out and be free, but I am happy that you now have a chance to live and enjoy your life with your love ones. People we all need to pray and pray daily, Money is not every thing, but he should get more then what they are offering him.
i think dean cage should get more than $150,000 becuz they accused him for sumthin he didnt do number one number to he shouldnt did that much time for sumthing he did committ also number three the court or the detectives should of listen to the man when he had to go to court becayse that is so disrespectful to him and his mom and it hurts her becuz they enceration her son.
Khiabet,
WHAT??????????????????????
heck naw that is not enough money!! that is a dang on shame!!!! THEY D**N RIGHT NEED TO WRITE HIM A BIG FAT CHECK!!
im so happy to hear ur story im going thru some difficult time there are accusing my husband of a crime he did not commit what conforts me is that i know and god knows my husband is innocent ,but this detectives dont do a good job they go get innocent people take them away from their families ,all i pray to god to remove detetives from there jobs how many innocent people are in jail i ask my self would i ever be able too hold my husband again will my kidz be able too hug and go to the park for baseball practice ,in all i see is my kids growing in there daddy away all thanks too detectives not knowing how to do a good job please pray for my family in i hope it will not take 10 yrs or 15 or etc untill they finally know my husband is innocent may god bless u n protect u always they think buy paying people off after theree mistakes makes everytng better i dont think so
150.000.00 is a joke within its self. Mr. Cage lost the years of watching his children grow up. He wasn’t there to comfort them through the hard times. There was a lost of not one but two grandparents while in prison neither grandparent had the opportunity to hug their grandson before departing from this world; and the system is throwing 150,000 at him like his life was nothing. 14 years of this man’s life was just taken not only from him but from all of the people that loved him. The goverment want to give this man less than 15,000.00 a years this is proverty. Inflation need to be considered what he could have made also the pain and sufferring, the heartbreak he had to endure and the many tears he shedded. I’m glad to know that the Lord is a part of your life Mr. Cage but even in that you are still human and the pain you endured and the things you went through while in prison know one will ever know, not going to the park with your children or watching them play football, basketball, or any activity had to be painful. I am so happy for you and others who made it through their ordeal and my prayers are that you can go forth without alot of resentment and release any built up angry so it won’t affectt your future, keep praying and let God help you through your readjustment back into society.
