Is NYC Giving Sean Bell’s Family the Runaround?

March 18th, 2009

The family of Sean Bell, the New York man killed in a barrage of police bullets in 2006, is pushing to get the Queens street where he died named after him, reports the New York Daily News. Relatives met with the local Community Board 12 about renaming the street in Jamaica, Queens after Bell, and they sent out flyers urging people to come out to the board meeting where the issue was to be discussed. However, a representative for the board called Bell’s family days before the meeting was to take place and informed them that the topic wasn’t on the calendar, reports the paper.  Click for more.

mighty whitey Said on

TWhite – What am I lying about? The fact is Obama is bi-racial. He was born to a white woman, his father is black. Sorry if the truth hurts.

mighty whitey Said on

I say this because Iam bi-racial!

mighty whitey,

Why do you feel that President Obama has more in common with you than with blacks? What brings you to this conclusion? I realize that biologically our president has a Caucasian mother and an African father. Whether he was the descendant of slaves or not is irrelevant because he was treated as such. Just read his books. He identifies himself as and the totality of his life experiences represents that of a black male American. Perhaps your misconceptions about blacks have confused you into thinking that all blacks come from the ghetto with drug dealing pimps as dads and welfare prostitutes as mothers who commit crimes daily and are uneducated. That is a big misconception that a lot of ignorant non-blacks share with you. Barack Obama’s experiences and the world’s perception of him is that he is a black man. This is no slight to any of the non-black Americans out there. But it is what it is. He is black. Being raised by whites did not protect him from any of our black experiences. Just ask him. It actually confused him while at the same time giving him the best of both cultures. His family was not wealthy either and he attended college and law school on student loans just like many black and white students do. When police saw him driving down the street they saw a black man driving down the street. They did not see a bi-racial man driving down the street who was raised by white people. They saw a black man…and they still do. These are the facts. President Barack Obama’s being elected presidency did not change is race.

Seschris,
I know you will stand by your notion that he is strictly a Black man to the end, but you have to see it this way. His being 1/2 Black wasn’t a negative experience for Obama, as it is for a poor Black living in the circle of failure/inner city. Being 1/2 Black (Affirmative Action) helped him get into the Ivy League schools (Harvard Law); and win the Presidency/Senator seat. Do you really think that if he were not 1/2 Black that he would be Pres today? McCain would have won vs. almost anyone else. Don’t get me wrong, i voted for Obama, and think he’ll be a great Pres. I just think that you’re over exaggerating the negativity of Obama’s ‘Black experience.’ Did he experience racism? Of course he did. Every minority, and/or biracial person has. But where did it get him? To the Pres. of the US.
Oh, and if you think for a second that his being 1/2 White didn’t help him at all, then you’re delirious. His story was known to everyone who voted for him in Ill, and during the Pres. elections. He had his White grandmother/mother with him during most of the elections in his career. This fact alone definitely swayed the semi-racists to rethink voting for him…and ultimately choose Obama. When the police see him, they obv saw a Black man…but that was trivial everyday stuff. The important stuff (college apps/law school apps/senatorial elections/Pres. elections) weren’t negatively affected by his racial structure. It HELPED HIM.

Why must we keep having this conversation? I totally disagree with all that you say in this regard. We need to agree to disagree on this matter and never broach it again. As a black person I have more in common with our president than you will ever understand and your denial of that is fine with me. It’s truly sad to see you trying to justify 1/2 of this and 1/2 of that and exaggerating which side is most beneficial. You are truly delusional to think that his white family helped him get into those schools. His wife went to the same schools and both of her parents were black! Many blacks have attended and graduated from Ivy League schools with black parents! So what is this nonsense you are saying? The neighborhood that I grew up in a black family with 4 daughters…all 4 graduated from Yale or Harvard! If you theory is true how can this be? You don’t know everything about blacks UMlaw! He has benefited from both sides. He’s a black man of mixed heritage and now he’s the president. Your insistence and detailed analysis and argument of this matter is what is trivial and juvenile. Please let’s not have this conversation again.

UMlaw Said on

Your reading comp is just not up to par, sorry to say. I stated that his being Black (1/2) helped him get into the ivy league schools, as it helped Michelle…as it helped the Black family in your neighborhood. BEING BLACK OR LATINO HELPS YOU GET INTO IVY LEAGUE SCHOOLS (AFF ACTION)!! MANY BLACKS/LATINOS WHO DON’T HAVE THE CREDENTIALS TO GET IN, GET ACCEPTED. Why are you stating instances of Blacks who got into ivy league schools when i clearly stated previously that THIS is a big factor in getting in. Asians, for example, are negatively affected by AFF ACTION b/c it is based on disproportionate minorities.
His being white helped him get votes. His being black also helped him get votes, and get into the ivy league schools…thats it, and that’s that.
We’ll agree to disagree.
