Is This Comic Book Racist?
July 9th, 2008

Black activists are up in arms over a popular Mexican comic book Memin Pinguin recently sold in WalMart. It features a dark-skinned Cuban boy (named Memin) with large ears and big pink lips, who’s always being made fun of because of his color. “This is poking fun at the physical features of an entire people. Making them look buffoonish (and) portraying the young [Black] kid as stupid,” Quanell X, an activist, told The Dallas Morning News. “Whenever they are beating him, they are referring to him as Negro. Even here, when he is being punched, slapped [he is called] Negro. This is a disgrace.” The comic received such a backlash that WalMart decided to remove it from their shelves, saying in a statement: “…[W]e understand that Memin is a popular figure in Mexico. However, given the sensitivity to the negative image Memin can portray to some, we felt that it was best to no longer carry the item in our stores. We apologize to those customers who many have been offended….” The comic, originally published in the 1960s, has been very popular in Mexico for years, so much so that the government decided to issue a stamp commemorating Memin in 2005 – a decision didn’t sit well then with U.S. activists and politicians who said the character was racist. But the Mexican government thinks it’s a misunderstanding and that Americans just don’t understand the character’s cultural importance in their country. Do you think this Memin character is racist?

R u serious this is diffently racist. If u just read the article about it it will tell u how they beat up this memin they constantly call him a negro. So if thats not racist i don’t know what is.
this book is obviously racist in my opinion. bein made fun of becuz of ur color is racism an discrimination even if it is fiction. it teaches the children that is is ok to make fun of this dark colour and it forshadows the feelings of many mexicans. the artcle even says Memin gets beaten an is called a Negro wat the HELL IS DAT?! RACISM obviously so all u common pple who refuse to open ur eyes an not see the obvious needs to check demselves an xplain to me how this is not racism
It is a little racist but all cultures deal with that (the lighter you are the more beautiful). While it is acceptable in the Mexican culture, I am glad Walmart realized the sensitivity of the picture and took it off the shelf (this is not Mexico). And to the person that said “what about Curious George?” Memin Pinguin is about a Cuban BOY! Curious George is about a MONKEY! There is no comparison….what the heck are you talking about LOL:)!
i think that it is racist and it should be kept in mexico if they think its funny but not in the united sates
you what is crazy is rem had a cute joke but the thing about that is american will work for more money. but at the same time there also losing their jobs . their so many other thing we as the people need to worry about then
some stupid comic book. everyone has racist in their culture! we need to stop these madness!!!!!!!! cops and gang bangers are doing the killing for every color that’s out there in ever state!!!!!!!!! i don’t care if you vote or don’t vote the BS is still happening!!!! PEOPLE WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!!!
Ithink it is stupid.
Since we don’t under stand the Mexican culture it’s hard to say if its racists, but what the comic stands for hating a person just cause he looks different is not a good message to younger generation hating some one cause there different, well I take it back this comic is racists, I don’t know why it got approve in the first place….

I hafta agree w/ Gina M. on everything she said above. And, yes, I don’t care how long it’s been around, the cover in itself helps u put the storyline together. And, PBrown, u were the 2nd to make a comment, hell, if Curious George crossed ur mind when looking at it, then u just confirmed that it IS racist. Curious George was a monkey. This character supposed to be a boy, c’mon now, 2 plus 2 equals 4. I don’t see how anyone could think it’s NOT racist.

It has long been a standing problem of hatred amongst people of color but for a coporation such as walmart it is all about profit to hell with consequences if it makes a dollar. The real problem is when you have a potential black president and so many of our own respected reverends and clergy hating on him thats whats crazy to me. Rev. Jesse Jackson comments hurt more than any cartoon and an apology is not enough.
First of all, Black hispanics have it pretty bad and are pretty much living in the 60’s when it comes to race issues in their country. My heart goes out to them. This is racist and more precisley ignorant especially in the context of American culture where we are much more sensitive and PC about race issues. In fact, Americans are the most PC about racial issues. I’ve travelled and have seen a lot so this character Memin is not a surprise. The company should go ahead and fire their int’l marketing director cuz cleary this was a failier. I’m glad Walmart knocked that crap off their counters, perhaps this will indirectly send a message to “white” hispanics about their ignorant perspective on race. Black America, we control a huge part of the world market, and are the front line in standing up for our bros and sisters everywhere else.
Wow, seriously I wonder why and how Blacks and Hispanics have such a horrible relationship. When we realize we are one in the same we will have so much power. Both groups are guilty of racism or stereotyping; so lets not point fingers. In addition, why was it an automatic thought that this cartoon was geared towards African Americans; some Hispanics are darker in complexion (hello they have African Ancestry) as well as persons of MIddle Eastern descent – and they deal with the same color issues that are prevalent in our communities.
Maybe the cartoon is bringing a light to the hate that persons with darker complexions, and big lips encounter growing up. Our community needs to look at that.
This is definitely racist. Regardless of if it is directed toward African Americans or just darker skinned Hispanics, making fun of someone based on color and beating them is racism. Racism means based only on race. It truly is sad that this surfaced. And honestly if its such a common symbol in their country and they love it so much they want to make a stamp out of it then they should keep it in their own country.
Yes, I think it is very racist it looks like Will Smith back in the days of Fresh Prince I just think that it comic book is degrading and need to be pulled from shelves all across the world. Somethings are not funny and this is not funny at all.
I am very impressed with Walmart’s stand on this issue…Anytime any racial group faces an issue as such….business and people should stand up and correct the issue…..lol…guess we have come a long way….we even read spanish now too!!!!
I think this is a racist book, especially hearing that when the other characters in this book is abusing him is also calling him NEGRO. I think that the book should have changed with the times, but it didn’t, and that’s why it was pulled off the shelves at Wal-Mart. Why did they think that this would go unnotice? I think that black people are tired of all the racist books, newspaper, and statement being made by igorant people, the thing that most offends us is these FAKE apologies. If this was suppose to be a funning book, why isn’t the white boy on the cover of this book, face made fun. SO TIRED! MINNEAPOLIS
I HOPE THEY DON’T THINK THEY ARE BETTER THAN AN AFRICA AMERICA BECAUSE SOME WHITE PEOPLE CALL THEM A N-WORD WITH
GOOD HAIR , SO WHAT THEY NEED TO DO IS TO STOP THE BS AND GET REAL . THAT IS RACIST
Actually, this is nothing new.
Mexico, China, Japan and some other countries have toys and publications such as these mimicking the White Supremacist mindset of how people of color, specifically black people, are viewed and compared to beasts.
All countries have been affected in this manner. Some people of color of different cultures and races have light-skinned / dark-skinned issues, just as some African-Americans have.
Let’s not focus on the publication since it has been around for a while. Let’s focus on eradicating the White Supremacist mindset behind the publication that affects us all.
If we really knew where monkeys came from, we would be tripped out!!!!

… I was born and raised in Southern California(around Mexicans) for some reason they feel that they are better than blacks. That’s odd considering how much Mexicans have benefited from “our” struggle- Black have broken down many barriers so that not only Blacks can benefit but other monorities have benefited as well. I still don’t understand the signifigance of “A Day Without A Mexican” Show me a movie called “United States Without Slavery” This country would not be as economical powerful as it is today- Yes the cartoon is an obvious depiction of what our ancestors had to deal with not too long ago! I am happy Wal Mart did the right thing !!
