Is This Comic Book Racist?

Black activists are up in arms over a popular Mexican comic book Memin Pinguin recently sold in WalMart. It features a dark-skinned Cuban boy (named Memin) with large ears and big pink lips, who’s always being made fun of because of his color. “This is poking fun at the physical features of an entire people. Making them look buffoonish (and) portraying the young [Black] kid as stupid,” Quanell X, an activist, told The Dallas Morning News. “Whenever they are beating him, they are referring to him as Negro. Even here, when he is being punched, slapped [he is called] Negro. This is a disgrace.” The comic received such a backlash that WalMart decided to remove it from their shelves, saying in a statement: “…[W]e understand that Memin is a popular figure in Mexico. However, given the sensitivity to the negative image Memin can portray to some, we felt that it was best to no longer carry the item in our stores. We apologize to those customers who many have been offended….” The comic, originally published in the 1960s, has been very popular in Mexico for years, so much so that the government decided to issue a stamp commemorating Memin in 2005 – a decision didn’t sit well then with U.S. activists and politicians who said the character was racist. But the Mexican government thinks it’s a misunderstanding and that Americans just don’t understand the character’s cultural importance in their country. Do you think this Memin character is racist?

how is this thing racist?

at first it was kind of racist but in its later years, his race wasn’t really important.
According to wikipedia “In yet another adventure called “Líos Gordos.”[1] Memín and his friends travel to Texas to play soccer. They go for a chocolate milkshake, but the place refuses to sell to Memín, because it doesn’t serve “Negroes”. His friends stand up for him, get into a fight, and end up in jail.”

That proves that Memins friends really liked him evem though he was black.

Well, well , well-it is ashame that we are in the 21st century and African-Americans are still having problems within our everyday lives. I am really tired of dealing with these type of problems. This comic book is RACIST! Sense the slavery days African-Americans were supposed to be referred to as a monkey that looks just like this stupid comic book! Mexico knew wat the were doing when they put this crap in the United States of America! I find it funny that differnt enthnicities talk about us when we made this entire country! Madame C.J. Walker was the first AFRICAN-AMERICAN WOMAN to become a MILLIONAIRE! Lewis Latimer-AFRICAN-AMERICAN MAN to helped with creating light in America so that we wouldn’t be in the dark. Dr. Daniel Hale Williams was a heart surgeon! I can go on and on about all the wonderful things that BLACK AMERICA created which made America today. It is an ignorant situation to even come up with something that horrific and so wat it is based on a dark cuban, it still isn’t right or cool at all. And plus this subject is personally about us! WAKE UP BLACK AMERICA AND SEE THE REAL WORLD! I type this for all the people who do not have any sense that are saying that this is not racist!

I really wish that other ethnicities would stop trying to act BLACK! U all remember wat Alicia Keys said at the Bet Awards when everybody wants to be like us? well that is definitley the truth! i am so tired of seeing whites acting black, hispanics acting black, and the asian ethnicity acting black also. There are so many cultures who are brain washed by the media! There are so many ethnicities that acts WHITE! I see it everyday- hispanics of some who wants to be white or act white and Asian who does the same thing. Everyone in this world just needs to be themselves. The color black some how is always portrayed as something bad like Halloween decorations. Always remember BLACK IS PROFESSIONAL AND SOPHISTICATED! LUV YOURSELF IN UR SKIN!!!!!!

I am amazed that any reasonable person could view this cartoon and not see that it is repulsive, offensive, it is degrading. No matter what countery or language or culutre a monkey boy that shines shoes with black face and big lips is a negative image directed toward those of african decent. Perhaps African American have a louder voice than our brother and sisters in Mexico and South America. I find it difficult to believe that dark skinned latin people do not find this offensive. And just because it has been around for 40 years does not make it right, or any more appropriate than it was in 2005 when Americans voiced concern over the stamps with this same figure. Just because light skinned Mexicans think it is cute or Ok does not make it so. And even if this is found to be accpetable is Mexico that is where it should stay It has no place in the United States.

this is interesting becuase it not known to many in america that what we know as a negetive black look is not just limited to or society but is world wide. Brazil, The Middle east, and of course Latin America all have dark skinned people who suffer from racistism, more or less then contemporary African Americans who i fell still deal with racistism today on an unacceptable level that i don’t understand. This comic to me is no diffrent then the fact that theres one “tokan” black kid on saterday morning cartoons and most of television shows were theres mostly white cast with one or two black people. As we all hope for a black president to show we came a long way, i feel feel we still have a long way to go(case in point this was being sold at Wal-Mart?)

I don’t think this is racial discrimination. Rather, it is human discrimination. The character in question is not depicted like a $@%? sapien, it is a chimpanzee at best. What a disgrace.

yes i think this comic has a lot to do with racism! i think people need to get it together because if we dont do anything about it its going to get worse. so everybody better get there mind right. if people dont see that has something to do with racism they stupid

yes, i do think it’s a racist comic…seeing a young black man is BEING MADE FUN OF…what kind of sickos will publish that.
when are we going to start loving one another?
we can start by destroying anything related to racism!
but you all should remember THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS PURE RACE WE’RE ALL MIXED SOMEWHERE IN TIME!

It’s not racist, what about Curious George is that racist too? Some people need to get a life. This comic has been in circulation forever and just now they want to make a deal out of it?? If this bothers then you then I feel sorry for you because there are far too many things in this world to worry about than this b.s

This comment is in response to the one Sep made:
“In yet another adventure called “Líos Gordos.”[1] Memín and his friends travel to Texas to play soccer. They go for a chocolate milkshake, but the place refuses to sell to Memín, because it doesn’t serve “Negroes”. His friends stand up for him, get into a fight, and end up in jail. That proves that Memins friends really liked him even though he was black.”

I speak only for myself, and not anyone else. I appreciate the fact that you have provided some more information of the comic book. And yes, obviously in the quote above Memin friends do like. However, myself being a young African American male, and knowing what my people have endured; and then seeing a comic with a picture that depicts dark-skinned people as apes/monkeys is very offensive to me. I understand your point, and I do not know your ethnicity; but I feel upset not about the comic book as a whole, but about the way in which the character Memin is portrayed (Large ears, big pink lips, Ape/monkey like features). The way the character looks is as if he is a little ape-man walking around, and that is what angers me. Why couldn’t they make his character to look like a regular human being, why rather tried to make the dark skinned character look like an ape/monkey. According to the American Heritage® Dictionary, an ape is defined as: Any of various large, tailless Old World primates of the family Pongidae, including the chimpanzee, gorilla, gibbon, and orangutan. Also it is a monkey, mimic or imitator, or a clumsy or boorish person.” I think this is what the author of this comic book is trying to do, as if He/She refers dark-skinned people to belong in a zoo. Isn’t that were animals belong?

Neither myself, nor any other dark skinned person deserves to be shown in this manner. And I like the comment made by Malcolm Jarvis, “This is interesting, because it is not known to many in America that what we know as a negative black look is not just limited to or society, but is also world wide. Brazil, the Middle East, and of course Latin America all have dark skinned people who have suffered from racism. More or less then contemporary African Americans who I fell still deal with racism today on an unacceptable level that I don’t understand.” I feel as if this comic book portrays all dark skinned people, whatever your nationality to be of ape descent. And this is something that I find to be racial, and I refuse to take down, or change my comments. I am not a very debatable person, but I will stand up for what is right, and I do not like the way the character is portrayed. If you want to respond, please do. I am not angry at you, but it is racism.

Oh, one more thing…..to AJcHtWn… Preach! I love your comment, and I love how you stood for our people, and presented historical facts. “Madame C.J. Dr. Daniel Hale Williams was a heart surgeon! I can go on and on about all the wonderful things that BLACK AMERICA created which made America today.” —Pure Intelligence, and Brilliance—

Things are never gonna change this is why this comic can be sold at popular stores like walmart no question. These are the last attempt to insult and oppress the likes of people of colour. Mexicans are only good for gang banging and eating burrittos so they should sort out their own issues before taking on things that do not concern them. the fools
