Jackson, Miss. Mayor Dies After Losing City’s Mayoral Primary
May 7th, 2009
Jackson, Miss. Mayor Frank Melton, 60, died early this morning with his wife , Ellen Melton, by his side, according to City Hall spokeswoman Goldia Revies.
After coming in third in his city’s mayoral primary election Tuesday, Melton was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance. According to sources close to City Hall, Melton has had a series of health problems but officials have declined to give details.
Next week, Melton was due in court for trial following an incident that led to a federal indictment and did severe damage to his career. In 2006, fed up with drugs in his city, Melton attacked a local crackhouse in Jacksons Virden Addition neighborhood with a sledgehammer. A jury failed to reach a verdict in the case in February when he was tried. Critics slammed him for behaving erratically, without authority and breaking the law.
Meanwhile, Jackson’s City Council has tapped its president, Leslie Burl McLemore to be acting mayor.
“I am going to respect the mayor’s privacy even in death,” Revies told reporters.
Melton was born in Houston, Texas in 1949 and relocated to Jackson from Tyler, Texas before running for mayor.

I wish to express my sympathy to the members of the Melton Family. Mr. Melton graduated with my son Bruce in 1967 from Booker T. Washington High School in Houston, Texas. I had the privilege of working with his mother, Marge Nelson at Douglas Elementary; and his father Herbert Melton at what was then Carter G. Woodson Junior High School.I pray God’s blessings upon his family and may you be comforted in knowing all the “good things” he did for young people over the years.
Blessings,
Mary E. Belvin, Houston, Texas
Rest in peace Mayor Melton. You will be missed!
I live in Hernando, MS and I know the two black Mayors in Memphis were sad to lose one of our positive black leaders. People may not agree on how he decided to clean up Jackson but eveyone knew it had to be done. I just sent my prays out to his family and everyone in Jackon area.
Let’s see can the new mayor do half the job ,dream , and change lives as well as Frank did! Who will take on the role as the city hero not just the honor of being the mayor of Jackson , Ms !!! I never met the guy but it seem like I knew him like a close friend . Every one knows that the media twist and turn the positive to negtives for a good or great story !!! For example BET made it seem like he died after hearing that he would not make the Primary ??? Big Story …..and That My Friends is the Bottom Line !!!!!!!!!!
I been living here in Jackson, MS for the last ten years, and I remember when I got here, Frank Melton owned/CEO of channel 2, WLBT, and I my jaw would drop, when I listen to him at the end of the newscast, with his segment, The Bottom Line. That man was really callin’ out all the dope-boyz, by name, and speaking out against crime like I never seen before in my life. All I was thinkin’ about him at that point, is he gotta be the most hated man on the planet by all criminals in the city of Jackson. He always was in the hood, doing things for children, but that man hated crime with a passion.
After he sold WLBT (channel 2), he was placed the head of the MBN, (Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics), by former governer (D) Musgrove, and he took his vindetta against crime to a whole nother level. Conducting roadsblocks all over the city, I mean actually participating in them with guns, and vest on, hat to the back, and he wasn’t playin’ no games!!! He went after everyone he called out in his segment, on the newscast, and got at them, I mean GOT AT THEM!!!
But after Musgrove lost his postion as the governor, and was replaced by (R) Haley Barbour, he was replaced in his position as head of the MBN, and soon after he ran for Mayor, against incumbent Harvey Johnson, who the criminals on the street loved, because on the streets, he was considered a non-existant, Frank won the election, and the streets haven’t been the same since.
I mentioned Mayor Melton in one of my songs I recorded back in January, entitled “North End”, on one of 3 albums set to drop, in about 2 weeks, and I was wondering if outta respect for Mayor Melton, if I should withhold the release date, and edit his name out of the song, I already sent the albums to my distributor, but I just don’t think I should bring his name up in my music, outta respect, especially, since my release date will be about a week after his funeral.
RIP, Crime-Fighter.
I lived in Jackson, Ms for 4 years and I will have to say that even though I am young Mayor Frank Melton did alot for the city. He was always working to improve the city and make it better. I think I was in the 10th grade at Murrah High School when he start the teen curfew. My cousins and I bitched and complained about it but he was doing it to keep some order in the city. Even with truancy they picked up kids all the time cutting school. So I say thank you to Mayor Frank Melton and his family for making the city better in a short amount of time. I don’t think anyone else could have done it better. May your soul rest in peace.

Donna you are sick to even post something like that on line and if it was up to me you would not be allowed on this site again. You are very sad and I will make sure that I pray for you. R.I.P Mayor Frank Melton
Mayor Frank Melton was a complexed man, but compassionate and personable. Almost everyone agrees, he was a little man with a BIG HEART. Did I agree with everything he did, No. In my opinion, he has done more for the City of Jackson than any of his predecessors. I saw him last at the Lynch Street Festival. I will miss him and I pray for his family and the leaders of our city. AND THAT MY FRIENDS, IS THE BOTTOM LINE!!! Peace Out, Frank
Only God Can Judge Man!
I am a proud citizen of Jackson, MS. I was very saddened to hear our Mayor Frank Melton death. I have never met this man personally. However, I feel he was a great and honorable man. At times, I did agree with some of his tactics to rid Jackson of thugs, hoodlums, etc. but he did the best he could. Once in a news interview, he spoke of his actions being actions to better the city of Jackson. Also adding to that statement, he stated that any faults would fall upon him and not the citizens of Jackson. Right or Wrong he faced the consequences of all his actions. He was truly a selfless man especially after the majority of citizens of Jackson turned their backs on him and he wanted to stay in office and finish what he started . Despite his health problems, he still wanted to fight for Jackson. If you were to see Mayor Melton’s pictures from 2004 to 2009 you would be amazed he just recently started looking his age. Personally, I felt that he should have walked away and not tried to seek re-election because of his condition but not the kind of Mayor he was.
As for his trial, the city of Jackson should be ashamed of putting him on trial just prove a point. Thus causing his heart condition to take a turn for the worse. True, he did not have a warrant and should have not done damage to that particular property. So many vacant houses in that Jackson area are used for drug addicts and other crimes. He just wanted it to be known that “NO” you can’t use these houses for crimes anymore. The owner of that property said that the house was occupied by a tenent but it looked vacant. I believed if the owner(s) made sure that their property was kept up then Mayor Melton would not have targeted that particular home thinking it was vacant. In other words, Slumlords not Landlords was the cause of that incident because they were not taking care of their property. The matter could have solve without him having going through this 3 ring circus he endured.
He was a great, honorable and selfless man. He will be truly missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. I truly believe that GOD just didn’t want to see him suffer anymore and hopefully he is in a place where he has no worries… Resting Finally In Peace!!!!
it is a sad day for jackson and the melton family. everyone clean there town up according to improvementsand changes. if all mayors do what he did, we wouldn’t have so many drug problems. i c no problem in tearing down those houses. i say tear dem all down. it is bad for the neighborhood and also unsafe for the neighbors. good job mr. melton and GOD bless his family. RIP.
