Jackson: ‘You Can’t Vote Against Health Care and Call Yourself a Black Man’

November 20th, 2009

During a reception held in Washington D.C to commemorate the 25th anniversary of his presidential campaign, Jesse Jackson told members of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) that an African-American legislator who voted against the health care bill in Congress is doing a disservice to their race.

“We even have blacks voting against the health care bill from Alabama, you can’t vote against healthcare and call yourself a black man,” said Jackson referring to Rep. Artur Davis (D-AL.) the lone dissenting vote from the CBC.

Davis, who is running for governor in Alabama, said he voted against the measure because he believes there are better alternatives than the bill passed by the House of Representatives earlier in November.

Alabama is also a conservative state and voting for heath care could be viewed as a political liability.

Jackson has attempted to calm down his criticism.

“I offer no challenge to his integrity as a leader,” Jackson said in a written statement. “Representatives should all vote their conscience in the interest of their constituency.”

What do you think, did Jackson go to far with his criticism?

This is a shame that people feel the need for attention to say things like this…

Typical Jackson, shooting his big,race-baiting mouth off first and, when chal-
lenged, attempting to spin his remarks to minimize damage. You’d think people would have figured him out after about 40 years of his garbage. He’s the mirror
image of right-wing,rebel-yellin’ crack-pots such as Rush Limbaugh,Glenn Beck,Sean Hannity,Michael the Savage Weiner,what’s-his-first-name Gal-
lagher,Dennis Prager,etc.

I do agree with the Rev. Jesse Jackson, however, I question how ANY individula can call themself human and vote against healthcare. There are millions of all races going without healthcare right now. Due to the state of our current economy thousands of Americans are losing their jobs and healthcare benefits. So even the people who were used to being covered are having to sacrafice taking themselves and their children to the hospital. Healtchare in an urgent need and everyone is trying for the best economical decision but what about the most humane one? How can you guarentee someone life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness and vote no to healthcare. It’s not a black/white issue or a class issue. I wish peple would just get it and give it a chance.

Mr. Jackson may need to be more tactful in his remarks. Mr. Davis is running for governor of Alabama and maybe trying to impress a certain group of people, but he needs to step up to the plate and find ways to spread the Recovery money to reach some of his state’s poorest constituents. As for healthcare, I hope Mr. Davis has some better suggestions.

It seems that the same people that scream right to life are contradicting themselves by saying there is no right to quality of life.to them healthcare is a priviledge, those who are able to pay get it and those who can’t, then to hell with you, just get sick, hurry up and die.
