Jay-Z’s at the Center of Glastonbury Music Festival Controversy

June 28th, 2008

America’s “President of Hip Hop” has some British knickers in a bunch. Some diehard fans of the U.K.’s famous Glastonbury music festival are upset that the headliner of the show this year is rapper Jay-Z.

This is the first time an Urban music artist has been selected as the main act of the show, a sign to many festival-goers that the event is straying from its Rock and Roll roots.

Some are even blaming Jay-Z for the last 200 tickets (out of tens of thousands) not being yet sold.  Even Trip-Hop artist Tricky (Yes, Lynn’s music partner and boyfriend on the TV show “Girlfriends” has chimed in. In an interview on Friday with the U.K.’s  National Post, he said “I can understand in some ways, because an American artist headlining Glastonbury is probably a bit weird for people. And the fact that it’s an urban artist – and he’s not actually that good. If it was like, Public Enemy or Rakim, you might get away with it, because Rakim’s an extreme talent, and Public Enemy changed the face of music. People in England would probably relate to that more. But the ‘Bling-bling, I’m God’ sort of bulls—, English people ain’t into that.

Jay-Z, on the other hand, has no shortage of supporters, including several English artists like neo-soul sensation Estelle and others. “

“I’ve never ever had a show that’s caused this much stir so I’m really looking forward to it,” says Jay-Z. “I know we don’t all play guitars but we all have to respect each other’s music. It’s beautiful that people feel passionate about an event, you have to have an opinion about who should perform there, but the world changes and we have to embrace the change.”

Im british and I have to say I don’t think that Jay-Z should have headlined Glastonbury is for guitar bands and that is what Glastonbury is -its allways sold out ASAP and thats why the 200 haven’t sold. I’m not dissing Jay-Z I’ve seen him live but at a concert!

I’m fan of JayZ. I love his music.I’m also a very open minded person and I believe that change is good. But the first thing I learned in Marketing class was the costumer is always right. Give the people what they want. You know what I mean? So if JayZ isn’t wanted he has to go. There’s a time and place everything and everyone.

All I’m reading here is “The people in England” this and “The people in England” that. Why are you all so anti-English just because of 1 man’s opinion and the complaints of a few rock heads over here? I’m black and I live in england and I listen to Hip Hop from Jay-Z (might not be my fav) to J-Dilla (RIP). I don’t go to Glastonbury and niether do most Hip Hop listeners over here. Please, you lot are over reacting. almost asd bad as Tricky yourselves. To Generalise about Brits is wrong. Do you think we sit here going Americans are this or that? No we fcuking well don’t! So ease up. Regina stop talking rubbish, you know nothing about British people.

OMG!!! Let me throw my two pennies in… I’m a born and raised English woman who LOOOOOOOOOOOOVES Jay-Z. From day dot I’ve been a big fan, got most of his albums, seen him in concert four times! So not all english ppl are hatin’. I saw Hov’s performance (on t.v) last night and he killed it!! He had a crowd of 80/90,000 + hangin onto every single word. Even Beyonce was jumpin’ up + down excitedly from the wings. Please do not think all english ppl are the of the same mindset just because we live in the same place. And please- no more referances to The Beatles, it is 2008, isn’t it…?

Rock N Roll would not exist if african american had not been doing it first. Without jayz’s grandparents and the rest of his cousins in U.S. there would be no Rock N Roll. The white people use to call it black, devil, and heathen music. Elvis tried to imitate in and keep it secret. What he did not know was his secret had been out. Guess who comes rockin to America after imitating that same music? The Beatles. Nothin new under the sun.

Jay-Z is an urban success story, he took lemons and made lemonade. Now he owns the orchid where the lemon tree came from. He has truly evolved from his younger, wilder days.

In 1981 Prince opened for the Rolling Stones at the L.A. Colisuem. The audience of white rock and roll fans threw garbage at him and booed him off the stage before he could even finish one song. However we see what a big success Prince became. Especially with white people. I know Jay-Z is already a success, but this story illustrates how people who put up the most resistance to change eventually learn to embrace it. Let’s hope these haters learn to embrace Jay-Z.

I’ll make this short and sweet ok who is Tricky? and what is he trying to prove? Somebody over there must know about Jay-Z and all that he has done to invite him to the show…. as the headliner. Do ya’ll really think he cares what they say about him all he has to do is show up, do what he does and leave.
