Katrina Children Are Sickest in U.S.
November 27th, 2008

Children of Katrina families are sickest in U.S. The children of families displaced from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita have serious health and mental ailments, a new study says. In fact, the report, released Monday by the New York-based Children’s Health Fund, are among some of the sickest children in the nation. One of the most alarming findings: 41 percent of children younger than 4 were diagnosed with iron-deficiency anemia, more than twice the rate of children living in New York City homeless shelters and more than twice the Centers for Disease Control’s rate for high-risk minority populations, Irwin Redlener, president of the group and the study’s author, told USA Today. These children are “the sickest I have ever seen in the U.S.,” Redlener told Newsweek. “As awful as the initial response to Katrina looked on television, it’s been dwarfed by the ineptitude and disorganization of the recovery.” More than half the kids had behavioral or learning problems. Also, 42 percent had respiratory infections and disorders that may be linked to formaldehyde and crowding in the trailers supplied by the government, but later declared unsafe. After Katrina, the Children’s Health Fund, a non-profit group that provides health care to children, set up mobile clinics throughout the Gulf Coast, including one outside Renaissance Village in Baton Rouge, then the largest Federal Emergency Management Agency trailer park in the region. Heath Fund researchers came to their conclusions after reviewing the medical records of 261 children who lived in a federally funded Baton Rouge trailer park until early summer, Redlener said. The study made some immediate recommendations: FEMA must provide contact information for these children so their medical needs can be treated and funding needs to be extended so that the Katrina children can get further medical attention.

RACISTS WILL BLAME THE PARENTS BUT ITS ALL GEORGE BUSHS FAULT
god have mercy on george bush for the sins he’s to pay for only god alone can help him, this goes to show how cruel someone can be and how racisim still affects the world, how will it take for us to realise that were equal
bush i have one thing to say to u
Let your conscience be your guide
Sounds like the govenrment took advantage of a natural distraster to continue its efforts to keep the disadavntage down for generations to come. What will be the long term affect on their health?Does that mean that these children’s children will also suffer and be haunted from the storm? Another example of how the government does not take care of those that need help the most!
OBAMA WILL GET THEM PAID
First of all, I don’t appreciate the “Katrina Children” title. “Youth Victims of Hurricane Katrina” — something along those lines, would have been better.
Yes, it is a shame, but also, many of these problems existed before Hurricane Katrina, so placing the blame 100% on the storm is a bit far-fetched.
I agree the government has not done their job when it’s come to New Orleans’ families (my family included), but we can not be sure that providing the now proclaimed “unsafe” trailers, was intentional.
And as much as I love Obama, Sharonda, he can not bring about as much change in that situation as we would like. We can only HOPE that he will see the disparities that we (New Orleans residents) still face, and that he will try to consider the best options for us with the current state of the economy.
God Bless
(I guess I should sign this)
“A Katrina Child”
(since I wasn’t legal when the storm hit)
?
I just dont understand why we are not any different from where we were 3 years ago. I am still living in another state and it seems as if the agencies have forgotten about us. Now that I have 3 months left for Fema(chac) to pay my rent, and after that I may be homeless. My job is not paying good, the economy sucks, and We are just stuck. I think that people should discuss this a little more so that we never forget that horrible natural disaster. I do blame the bush administrations on the way they treated us while I was still in New Orleans. The worst time of my life and I will never forget it! I am stating a blog about my real life experience during Karina, and After Katrina posted on my site@ http://bvelvet.webonsites.com Thanks.
HOW COME THE PEOPLE IN FIRES GET FASTER CARE THAN THAN THE KATRINA VICTIMS? COME ON IF YOU CAN’T SEE WHATS REALLY GOING ON HERE? I CAN’T HELP! THINK BLACK PEOPLE!
Where’s our ….group….outrage! we should all come together and boycott! some of the biggest company’s and products ….that will wake! all there asses up! to what we mean!…money talks the loudest! folks…so until we all put our money where our mouths are…we will never! be really heard or respected!
my question is what help is out there for those families who are suffering with those symptoms
Before the storm/after the storm, goverment ignoring problems the easy blame . What about the African American leadership of New Orleans for the past 25 years. These children have/had life long health and social issues that must/should be addressed.
President Elect Obama is just one! Change! The fight begins with us – the parents, community, church and the state to regulate.
As w/ the CEO’s of every major corporation we have to let go of the bling -bling image and forcus on the needs of society our children.
This people will not help there selfs they all want a handout , movie to a third world country and see real proverty .
You black people’s all you want to do is blame, blame but you will not help you want everything free on work involved .
David shut the F* up,
I’m sick of you bring your racist ass up on here pointing out nothing!
These people needed a damn hand out and then some. If your not trying to be part of a solution to the problems that B ET put out there, i wish you would stop adding to it. Your a typical white ass fool. Throw rocks and hide your hands so you won’t get caught.
Unless you were under a rock, you know what happen in New Orleans. David you are so freaking stupid. People were left for dead, but as soon as something happens over seas, the US wants to jump out and save the world. Now if this happen in CA or NY the government would have been all over. However it happen in poor LA, who cares. David do not think all blacks want a hand out, because there is not darn thing that you or anybody else can give me, that I cannot give myself.
David. Lets get some facts straight . Where the only people effected by Katrina black? No so Lousiana has a high population of underprivileged. Although the pictures on TV are showing a high number of Blacks , there are a white people that too where impacted. Also statiscally, there are more white people receiving welfare benefits then any other race. Check your facts before you display your IGNORANCE
its ashame these are our people we are treating like this! something has to give!
