Kwame Kilpatrick Says He’ll Rise Again, Despite Resignation, Jail Time
September 5th, 2008Outgoing Detroit mayor tells citizens he takes responsibility for felonies.
Outgoing mayor of Detroit Kwame Kilpatrick says his fall from political grace won’t be the end of his contributions to community leadership. Hours after pleading guilty to obstruction of justice and announcing his plans to resign, the beleaguered leader gave farewell speech to supporters and live TV cameras, saying, “I take full responsibility for my actions.” Kilpatrick agreed to serve four months in jail and pay $1 million in restitution in exchange for dismissal of perjury charges, additional felonies and the possibility of 10 or more years in prison. In addition, the mayor must surrender his law license and agrees not to run for office during his five years of probation. Kilpatrick’s perjury, obstruction of justice and misconduct in office charges stemmed from his discipline of cops whose investigation into police overtime threatened to expose the mayor’s personal life. Dozens of text messages sent between Kilpatrick and his ex-chief of staff Christine Beatty show an extra-marital affair between them in 2003. The former officers were blocked from probing alleged overtime abuse by Kilpatrick’s security squad whose members reportedly served duty during the mayor’s sexual encounters. Kilpatrick and Beatty, who’s now divorced, denied their affair while under oath at a 2007 civil trial where the investigating cops sued the mayor and the city. The cops won their lawsuit and the mayor later settled on the city’s behalf for $8.4 million – apparently after learning about the text messages. Beatty has since divorced her husband and also faces multiple felonies. “I wish that we could turn back the hands of time and tell that young man to make better choices, but I can’t,” Kilpatrick said Thursday night. Immediately following his guilty plea, the mayor pleaded no contest in a separate assault case involving a July confrontation with Wayne County sheriff’s deputies. While not specifying how he’d comeback from the legal and political devastation he’s facing, Kilpatrick expressed pride and appreciation for his administration and family, saying he’ll “rise” again.

The actually topic at hand was not race and I apologize for that. I was addressing people who used race in any measure as to the reason Kwame found himself in a bad situation. In no way was i trying to capitalize on him. I feel bad for Kwame. I do not get satisfaction from putting people down. I am not black. I was born in Highland Park and raised on the West Side of Detroit. I spent 8 years of my life in St Louis which is somewhat of a miniature Detroit. I am sickened by anyone who plays the race card just as much as I am by a rascist. In short this is what I wanted to express. You can remove people who BS you. Its when you believe your own BS that you are in a world of hurt. if you believe in people who are clearly BSing themselves than you need to take a look at who you have been putting faith and confidence in. Kwame at this point is dillusional and exhibits signs of being a sociopath. Anyone who is still not thoroughly convinced he is losing and believes he is winning needs serious therapy. Without naming examples these are the sort of folks who will take people to the gates of hell with them if they are not arrested and dealt with in one way or another. Corruption has always been a seriosu issue wit Detroit. Kwame did not invent it nor should he be demonized. We all fall prey to temptation because it is a HUMAN issue-not a race issue what my point. As for T Covington I’m Italian and I see my neighbor as my neighbor – nothing more or less. Kwame I hope you find what you need in the end of this. God Bless
I am sorry, Kwame should feel bad, for lying, for commiting crimes, He as a black man should thought well before his actions, black man or white man if your a public person, (such as politics) you need to behave in a public manner, Its alreadly known that black men are labeled. To have had recieved explicit text messages and lie about it, you open that can of worms yourself. Its been a downwirl spin for you since. If you think that you will rise from this, thats good. Stay positive. you need to. But did you not learn anything from Eliot Spitzer’s situation?
I am not judging, but it ’s sad that he traded his future for a piece of booty, lies and greed. He made the choice to do so. My heart gones out to his family.
This mans behavior make White folks not want to vote for Obama. This man is sick and needs his butt kicked. We don’t need any two penny pimp in office. Is this why this city is going down? Sex addict…cheating on his wife..this fool is to hot to run a city. I say send him to jail and let him get off…the guy is hot.
well everybody lie, something you need to keep it to yourself. That’s why its pays to travel alone, you won’t tell on yourself. as for his family, hold on to what you want.
He’ll Rise Again—I hope in another city
not Detroit.
Mr. Mayor I have prayed for you and your family and still and hope for you and I will vote for in the future for what ever position you run for. KEEP HOPE ALIVE and Iwill be waiting for your come back.
I think it would a blessing to see Kwame rise again. The only way he can rise is if Gods helps pull him up. As a Detroit resident I feel the damage he has done to our city is unforgiveable and cannot be undone. Not only the shame and embarrassment but also a city deficit that even the national deficit cannot rival on respective scales. We have a long way to go to rebuild our city. I have faith in our citizens and although city government has in some ways dissapointed me, Detroit is every residents responsibilty. It is our responsibilty to elect a Mayor who will have the best interest of the city at heart, not just he or she’s personal interest.
We all have sinned. But there is consequences for our actions. He can still contribute to society without being in the political limelight.
I THINK THAT KWAME HAD FUN DOIN WHAT HE WAS DOIN, AND IF HE COULD DO IT WIT CHRISTINE RIGHT NOW AND NOBODY WAS WATCHIN HE WOULD AND SHE WOULD TOO! CAUSE DEY WAS LUSTIN AFTER EACH OTHER AND WHEN U DOIN THAT, IT’S GOOOOD!!!
BUT HE’S PAYIN FOR WHAT HE DONE, AND HE’LL BE BACK… AND SLICKA THAN EVER! HA! HA! HA! HA!
Kwame M. Kilpratick, I love you for your intelligence and manner to capture the publics heart. I believe that the Media of Detroit tared and feathered you because so many individuals feared your abalities to lead. I am saddened that a personal issue has cost you and your family so much grief and distrubtion to your daily lives. But, I am a faith filled individual; And, I have been taught that GOD always refines those whom HE loves and has chosen for HIS duties to deliver greatness. GOD BLESS you and yours and know that this old lady will forever hold you in her daily prayers.
Its over! lets make room for the next young black leader.
WOW. he is a humor guy, many friends like to chat with him online on tall dating site http://Tallmingle.com ,He often told us some funny jokes. Seems he is famous on that site, especially some hot models talk with him positively.
We all make mistake but it take a big man to appologize for his mistakes a n come back even stronger than ever. in closing mayor u will come back even stronger than ever. a Man that stand for nothing fall for anything.. Next time just remember dont get your money an loving n the same place.LOL
L.W. Thanks for your clarity!!! Don’t know what you may have been trying to post the 1st 2 times, but I give you mad props on what you were saying. Though I didn’t ask you about your race to discriminate, but I like that fact that someone can talk sense about an issue that may stand outside of race or that is a different race. You didn’t do it to be bias, which means a lot. I respect that in you. You, my friend, have good insight. Let’s all label L.W. mayor… LOL
Be in peace homie!!!
Hey, Mr. Kilpatrick, if you’re reading any of this, pick ya head up bruh. You may have falling, but only One can truly pick you up and dust you off. He is the only one who can truly judge you. We as a people are not happy with your ways, but we commit sins just the same. To that Great Being in the heavens, a sin is a sin… Let he who is without sin cast the first stone… I think not one of us who are writing in this blog in sin free. SO STOP STONING MR. KILPATRICK!!!! He’s just a human who thought his slick ways would get over on us… Just like our Pres and many of our country’s leadership…. ONE LUV!!! Oh YEAH, GO REGISTER and GET OUT & VOTE!!! I’m ready for a change, aren’t you??? GO OBAMA!!! PEACE!!!!
Danny and Raymond, I applaud you both on your objective insight. Just because a person that gets arrested or charged with a crime doesn’t mean that racism was the motivation. Unfortunately, many of us are so obsessed with race and prejudice that we can’t see clearly to make an assessment of anything. If everything is racism, what is not? Surely, there has to be some things that are not. Anyway….I agree that Kwame needs to focus his attentions of those he hurt and deceived and not on “His” comeback. There were a lot of people hurt by this and I’m not that concerned about what he’s going to do for himself as I am what amends he’s planning to make with others. Recently, the republicans used a clip of Barack Obama praising this crooked mayor and calling him his friend. Kwame has done a lot of damage. A lot!
Jessica must be so desperate and pitiful to post dating sites on serious news posts. Is she trying to get guys to see her profile or something? Doesn’t she think that guys would see her as disrespectful for doing that?
