Kwame Kilpatrick Says He’ll Rise Again, Despite Resignation, Jail Time
September 5th, 2008Outgoing Detroit mayor tells citizens he takes responsibility for felonies.
Outgoing mayor of Detroit Kwame Kilpatrick says his fall from political grace won’t be the end of his contributions to community leadership. Hours after pleading guilty to obstruction of justice and announcing his plans to resign, the beleaguered leader gave farewell speech to supporters and live TV cameras, saying, “I take full responsibility for my actions.” Kilpatrick agreed to serve four months in jail and pay $1 million in restitution in exchange for dismissal of perjury charges, additional felonies and the possibility of 10 or more years in prison. In addition, the mayor must surrender his law license and agrees not to run for office during his five years of probation. Kilpatrick’s perjury, obstruction of justice and misconduct in office charges stemmed from his discipline of cops whose investigation into police overtime threatened to expose the mayor’s personal life. Dozens of text messages sent between Kilpatrick and his ex-chief of staff Christine Beatty show an extra-marital affair between them in 2003. The former officers were blocked from probing alleged overtime abuse by Kilpatrick’s security squad whose members reportedly served duty during the mayor’s sexual encounters. Kilpatrick and Beatty, who’s now divorced, denied their affair while under oath at a 2007 civil trial where the investigating cops sued the mayor and the city. The cops won their lawsuit and the mayor later settled on the city’s behalf for $8.4 million – apparently after learning about the text messages. Beatty has since divorced her husband and also faces multiple felonies. “I wish that we could turn back the hands of time and tell that young man to make better choices, but I can’t,” Kilpatrick said Thursday night. Immediately following his guilty plea, the mayor pleaded no contest in a separate assault case involving a July confrontation with Wayne County sheriff’s deputies. While not specifying how he’d comeback from the legal and political devastation he’s facing, Kilpatrick expressed pride and appreciation for his administration and family, saying he’ll “rise” again.

I think its sad that he has to spend time in jail when they have Casey Anderson who have lied to the police and probaly under oath. She reported her 2 year old child missing after 31 days. Now there thinking the now 3 year old is dead. BUT GUESS WHAT? Casey Anderson is being repeatly bonded out of jail over and over again. Now GUESS WHAT? there thinking about doing a movie deal to continue to bond her out of jail. I really believe some races help there own in there dirt.
All the above comments are true take heeve Mayor
Another brillant man just let his personal demons get in his way. He will rise above this nonsense a better man. He has been an effective leader for the city even though most would rather concentrate on the current situation. He will be missed! I personally am praying for everyone affected in this mess.
Kwame, you will rise, because that is what you put out in the universe to do.
Its not about race, its about admitting your mistakes and growing from them.
You have a long life ahead of you. Being a young man, there was so much temptations out there. Now! you will be awares. Woman has been a weakness for man since Eve. When are you guys going to learn, a woman can make you or break you. You selected the later. Now try and build with the woman that will make you (wife). Have a blessed life.
You are not the first man to fall and you will not be the last. I just want to know when are you guys going to learn, and stop falling from grace.
Kwame got a just sentence for this portion of his crime. Kwame did a lot to try to beat the system, but did not get away scott free. Too much pride can bring down any man, it did Solomon and now Kwame. This man, Kwame has done a lot that cost the city of Detroit a lot of money. Now let’s not forget that he did a lot for the city to restore it too. But doing wrong always has a way of coming back to bite you. I was once very proud of Kwame and now I am ashamed of his antics. But I believe in his intelligence and if he wills himself to make a comeback, then he will do it. And hopefully he will have learned lessons which will make him an even better person as a leader than he was before.
I think that its a shame that when we get a Black, or African Amrican in office, we have some that just let us down. He could have been more that what he was! Black Leaders need to know that when they take on postions in a political office it is not all about you anymore. They represent a past, present nd future and they hould be held accountable for their actions. I think that he should just bow out nicely and never return to any office. He doesn’t know how to handle a postion with authority because its obvious hw he handles it. Word to the wise Kmame what up withe the loud suits, dress for business not play.
yeah he lied uner oath, cheated on his wife and should of came clean! They should get her too! He should of known when you are African American they will watch you closely and any little thing you do and say will be used against you. They were both wrong for having a relationship of that nature (no sin in greater than the next)! Once again Satan has came in and devour both families and only God can reverse the curse and restore everyone involved. I pray that both familes seek God and ask God to supply all thier needs and bring comfort and peace!
Bill Clinton told the truth and he remained in office! Kwame lied (never should of did it and then when he was caught he should of confess)…. he should of known that when you are black then you will be watched like a hawk!
I shall do a minor evil to achieve a greater good or My aim for greater good makes all the evils I have done right.
Mayor Kilpatrick this is not the end, but, a new beginning. This too shall pass!!!
May God restore a new life for you, your wife and family.
even the people of Detroit cant be as stupid as the people in Washington D.C or can they? where in hell(Detroit) did he get a million bucks?
thank god, kwamee is out and finally stepped down. this scandal along with everything else he has done wrong has almost completely destroyed everything this city has worked so hard to gain. and to prove how corrupt he is, even his last act of mayor is illegal. good bye to the worst thing that ever happened politically to not only the city of detroit but the state of michigan.
DANIEL YOU IGNORANT AS HELL
how can they be a bunch of RASICTS when 75% of the people against him where black. you cant assult police officers end of story!!!
Yes, Bill Clinton lied and had to resign afterwards. Mayor Kilpatrick lied and had to pay as well. I am still in support of the man. I just think that taking the man’s pension and making him pay $1M in restitiutions is a bit much. What is the $1M really for? He is a strong man and will back on top of his game. God Bless him and his family. He still has support in the “D”.

Mr. Kilpatrick this is not the end, it’s a new beginning. This too shall pass!!!
May God recover and restore a new life for you, your wife, and family.
Trust. He will rise. I hope the mayor learns from this lesson. He was an effective leader, I was looking forward to the city making a come-up . So now i will wait to see where the city is headed, since it was so much extra work was put in getting Kwame out of office. Everybody put in overtime, while we are here starving in this MF. The mayor was bringing change, people don’t like change. The mayor did get “caught” breaking the law. So he should have to answer for that. But it went too far. Did it affect his ability to effectively run the city? People lie everyday , and people are going to continue to lie.
He got a slap on the wrists!!! His sentence is a joke!!!! Any other black man or white man for that matter, that wasn’t rich or a politician would have been sentenced for REAL time. How many felony’s did he commit? Including asssault on a police officer and numerous violations of the court?!?! Our court system is a joke and so is he!!!!
Ya’ll know YT holds us to a higher standard than they hold themselves …IT’S ALL GOOD we come from Greatness…we should be held to a Higher Standard…
That just means, in Gods eyes we are people of higher morals…which is a great thing…THE BIBLE SAYS: When God Finally finishes with this system of things, those that were LAST will be FIRST and the First (YT) will be last…It won’t be long ya’ll.
This whole legal and political structure is being reconstructed AS WE SPEAK. Even, if Mother Nature has to come in and have her way, By the grace of God. this judicial and political structure is coming to an end.
You know most white people don’t know good moral judgement for thier own people anyway, but they can sure dish it out on us!…LET THEM KEEP DOING IT…IT IS ALL GOING TO BACK FIRE ON THEM IN THE END. They are the ones who don’t learn from thier mistakes because of it.
It;s like Micheal Vick and a boatload of other unjust rulings…if they had been White people the punishment would have not been so harsh…
God is keeping count of it all ya’ll
It;s all good!
The good thing here is that the Brotha’ FINALLY admitted his faults and was honest with himself….Give Thanks…now he and his family can heal. inspite of what YT puts on him…he can stand up before GOD at this time and move on in the spirit of Truth!
Hallelujah
my prayers are with him and his family. and the nation as a whole…we need it.
Oh kwame! is he a ghanaian?
i’m so sorry for him,but he is such a brave man, safe man.
This Mayor is young and stupid.
He will learn.
Now his law degree is gone. That is the worst.
His wife and children are embarrased and ashamed of him.
The black community is again shamed with another leader.
Why are black men always getting caught with their hands in the cookie jar?
Pussy is the down-fall of our leaders.
