Kwame Kilpatrick Says He’ll Rise Again, Despite Resignation, Jail Time

September 5th, 2008

Outgoing Detroit mayor tells citizens he takes responsibility for felonies.
Outgoing mayor of Detroit Kwame Kilpatrick says his fall from political grace won’t be the end of his contributions to community leadership. Hours after pleading guilty to obstruction of justice and announcing his plans to resign, the beleaguered leader gave farewell speech to supporters and live TV cameras, saying, “I take full responsibility for my actions.” Kilpatrick agreed to serve four months in jail and pay $1 million in restitution in exchange for dismissal of perjury charges, additional felonies and the possibility of 10 or more years in prison. In addition, the mayor must surrender his law license and agrees not to run for office during his five years of probation. Kilpatrick’s perjury, obstruction of justice and misconduct in office charges stemmed from his discipline of cops whose investigation into police overtime threatened to expose the mayor’s personal life. Dozens of text messages sent between Kilpatrick and his ex-chief of staff Christine Beatty show an extra-marital affair between them in 2003. The former officers were blocked from probing alleged overtime abuse by Kilpatrick’s security squad whose members reportedly served duty during the mayor’s sexual encounters. Kilpatrick and Beatty, who’s now divorced, denied their affair while under oath at a 2007 civil trial where the investigating cops sued the mayor and the city. The cops won their lawsuit and the mayor later settled on the city’s behalf for $8.4 million – apparently after learning about the text messages. Beatty has since divorced her husband and also faces multiple felonies. “I wish that we could turn back the hands of time and tell that young man to make better choices, but I can’t,” Kilpatrick said Thursday night. Immediately following his guilty plea, the mayor pleaded no contest in a separate assault case involving a July confrontation with Wayne County sheriff’s deputies. While not specifying how he’d comeback from the legal and political devastation he’s facing, Kilpatrick expressed pride and appreciation for his administration and family, saying he’ll “rise” again.

Kwame was a fool and thought he was above the law. He never believed he would be prosecuted for his actions “in Detroit”. Its not a matter of race, its a matter of the LAW and Lying…….

It it is just like Black People to stand behind someone who has fcked. The white man had nothing to do with this.. The white man didn’t make him cheat on his wife, send text messages to his mistress and then lie about it under oath. All the while the people of Detroit were paying for it. He did all this on his own. He should have been stepped down before it even came to this. But true to form like most black men his ego got in the way and now he’s paying for it. I hope that he never comes back to run for anything.. Or will the city of Detroit be just as dumb as DC and re-elect?

Kwame will be back, he comes from a political family. I voted for Kwame twice and I voted for him because he is a politician. He knows how to get things done, being a “loving faithful husband” is not a prerequisite for leadership. In fact many of America’s “great” leaders were unfaithful. (King, Kennedy, Roosevelt, Clinton) Detroit is a tough “working class” city, were not afraid to get a little dirty and I hope my neighbors will remember that we need a Mayor with a litte dirt, because the suburbs will eat a “soft, hen pecked, spineless, loving devoted husband” alive if that’s who we elect. Because we know he won’t have an affair and “embarrass” the city. Mayor Colman Young ruled Detroit for years, had kids out of “wedlock” and cursed out anyone who opposed him, and we named the Municipal Building after him. Kwame will bounce back from this, the fact that they made him agree not to run for office for 5 years, speaks to his popularity and support amoung the people of Detroit.

The allegations of rascism in the case of the lawabiding people verses the very questionable Kwame Kilpatrick are old and stupid.

Is Kilpatrick the man that I would want to reprtesent me? ABSOLUTELY NOT!

Is there such a shortage of black men who are qualified to hold the down the office of city mayor, that someone like Kilpatrick gets elected? If he was white, I’m sure that the black community would not give hiom a free pass.

Maybe Detroit deserves to be led by a convicted criminal.

I hope that we hear that he is a changed man after his 5 years and that he is able to find an HONEST job that will keep him too busy to get into any more trouble or into the pockets of the general public. Tough job for the new mayor and I wish him luck….be honest and you will gain the respect of the voters and Detroit can once again be a city proud of both its government and its peoples.

The speach that the MAYOR gave last night, was his best. He was Strong , confident, and seemed very seceire about what he had done. His wife was looking much better. My heart went out to her the day before ,when she was in the courtroom. Kwame Kilpatrick could of been better. And if he really wants to lead Detroit again, he has alot to prove to the people of this great city. And as for the rascism, that’s crap and eveyyone knows this. He broke the law. In my eyes anyone caught breaking the goes to jail. Good luck Kwame And god bless your family

As a former Detroiter now living in Arizona, I am glad that this is finally over for the city and it’s residents. It is time to move on and a time to begin the healing process. My prayers are with all involved especially the children from both sides. Detroit is still a great city and Michigan a great state, and I hope it can too rise from the ashes. We all make mistakes and hopefully both the former Mayor and Christine can take the lessons learned and never repeat them especially talking on city-owned Blackberries. I’d like to also praise Kim Worthy for doing a great job once again to bring those responsible to justice. And for those angry with Governor Grandholm, she was just doing her job.

Only God Can bring this man back from his distructive ways. The only problem is I don;t think he has that option. This man has pride and an ego .God only gives grace to the humble. Humble yourself because you want to not because your forced into it.

He brought shame on the city of Detroit. Ask anyone outside of Michigan what they think of Detroit and you are likely to hear some very negative things – with Kwame at or near the top of the list. He had an opportunity to do some very good things for the people he had the honor to serve – but he failed. This is not something that happened to him – this is something that he created. What a sad man. Detroit loses all around.

You people that are still Kwame supporters……..STUPID!!!!!! What exactly did he do for the city?? All of the things he claims he did (i.e. Superbowl, All Star Game) were already in place before he even got in office, thanks to DENNIS ARCHER! I’m so glad I no longer work or live in Detoilet.

I don’t see why not.But let this be a lesson for all blacks, you are always under a microscope and on the radar when you are black in what ever you do.Politics, entertainment or just a ordinary joe blow.Yes, the mayor did get to big headed but this should humble him and remind him that you are responsible for your actions.

Kwame may indeed be back after his probation is over, arrogant thief and liar that he is. The citizens of Detroit were stupid enough to vote him into office not once but twice. There is no good reason to think they wouldn’t do the same again.

gail Said on

Jsmith, I agree with you. However, I wish him the best.

PEOPLE, PEOPLE

This was not about RACE.

Kwame Kilpatrick has never shown remorse for what he’s done. He basically laughed throughout his “guilty” plea. The whole thing is a joke for him.

Anybody who believe that he will rise from this and be in a position of power has blinders on. He is a thief and a liar. People of Detroit, please, please do not let this man back into office.

cuddles to daniel’s comment. thank you for pointing it in black on white. some people just don’t get it and you called them out. People keep talking about it’s Kwame’s business who he had an affair with. some of us do get it he had an affair with another women SO WHAT not our concern but he SCREWED DETROIT and some of them can’t see the forest from the trees. In case someone does not understand SCREWED DETROIT he lied to the people he was leading. All that stuff he said he done for the City on TV last night HA HA, when he was still in High School and College it was already in the makings from previous Mayors. I can remember the late great Mayor Young telling folks off about Detroit when he was trying to fight for something he believed would help Detroit rise up. Oh excuse me didn’t Mayor Archer have meetings regarding some of the now things Detroit has? It’s funny how people do the majority of the work and then another person shows up and takes all the credit for it. I’m sure i’m gonna piss somebody off. oooooollllllllllll weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

The only good thing I can say about Kwame is that he’s at least now attempting to take responsibility for his actions. Situations like this are sad to me. It is hard enough for us African Americans to get ahead..but when in power, it’s situations like this that the public hears about..making it more difficult for everyone. Regardless of whether or not he becomes a “better person” in the future, he was a grown man when he committed all these crimes and he should have known better. At this level of power, one’s honesty , responsibility and maturity is not only a reflection of themselves, their family and decision making abilities, but also impacts the lives and objectives of other responsible African Americans working 10 times as hard to make it in a racist society. Lets hope next time..if there is a next time, Kwame is able to think of others, in particular his fellow African Americans, before he makes more mistakes. I pray that Obama can lead the way!

What the hell was he thinking he did’nt think he was going to caught well think again i think he should get what ever is coming to him and was it worth it i think not and wht is is his wife saying to him i know she is embrassed about his actions. Well i think he needs prayer and time to think on what he has done to his life and career it is pretty much history. better luck next time.

of course he will be back he is to dumb to know when to stop….. hence the web of lies he told!
