Kwame Kilpatrick Says He’ll Rise Again, Despite Resignation, Jail Time
September 5th, 2008Outgoing Detroit mayor tells citizens he takes responsibility for felonies.
Outgoing mayor of Detroit Kwame Kilpatrick says his fall from political grace won’t be the end of his contributions to community leadership. Hours after pleading guilty to obstruction of justice and announcing his plans to resign, the beleaguered leader gave farewell speech to supporters and live TV cameras, saying, “I take full responsibility for my actions.” Kilpatrick agreed to serve four months in jail and pay $1 million in restitution in exchange for dismissal of perjury charges, additional felonies and the possibility of 10 or more years in prison. In addition, the mayor must surrender his law license and agrees not to run for office during his five years of probation. Kilpatrick’s perjury, obstruction of justice and misconduct in office charges stemmed from his discipline of cops whose investigation into police overtime threatened to expose the mayor’s personal life. Dozens of text messages sent between Kilpatrick and his ex-chief of staff Christine Beatty show an extra-marital affair between them in 2003. The former officers were blocked from probing alleged overtime abuse by Kilpatrick’s security squad whose members reportedly served duty during the mayor’s sexual encounters. Kilpatrick and Beatty, who’s now divorced, denied their affair while under oath at a 2007 civil trial where the investigating cops sued the mayor and the city. The cops won their lawsuit and the mayor later settled on the city’s behalf for $8.4 million – apparently after learning about the text messages. Beatty has since divorced her husband and also faces multiple felonies. “I wish that we could turn back the hands of time and tell that young man to make better choices, but I can’t,” Kilpatrick said Thursday night. Immediately following his guilty plea, the mayor pleaded no contest in a separate assault case involving a July confrontation with Wayne County sheriff’s deputies. While not specifying how he’d comeback from the legal and political devastation he’s facing, Kilpatrick expressed pride and appreciation for his administration and family, saying he’ll “rise” again.

It’s very easy to judge someone else and to even say what I would have done but until you have been place in his shoes Judge Not for God has already judge us all. Now what we should be doing is praying for each other so we may have the wisdom to not make the same mistake. Yes Detroit is hurting but No fault of the Mayor, but due to the fact like every other city across this nation the economy, people losing their homes, and job losses.
Supermax, It is that kind of thinking that is keeping our society down; that guy cheated on his wife by using tax money to pay for his lavish lifestyle. He put himself before the people he was meant to serve and for that reason, he was meant to go down. He may come back to the political whelm…who knows? All I know is this: If I ever move back to Detroit [NOT!!!], I will never vote for that dude. If he comes to Boston, we will throw him out of our city–better yet, our state–quick! I just hope that Ken Cockrel, Jr. will be able to hold Detroit down before they have their special election….
red navigator, two dead strippers, vacations on the citys dime, gary brown and howard nelthrup, 8.4 million dollars, christine beatty, lying under oath and assaulting a cop scandle after scandle and cover up after cover up all of this and you people play the race card race had nothing to do with this and by the way neither did god his sentence was a joke and so is he when all is said and done his mommy will find him a nice job in washington probably as a lobbyist for ethics reform { ha ha ha } lets just remember him for what he was a corrupt politician and now a convicted felon see ya kk you got off easy
About time, this man is a evil self absorbed person who cheats on his wife and city dozens of times. His wife is a joke as well. She knows he cheats whenever he thinks he can get away with it and yet she stays. The funny think is that the people of Detroit actually reelected him. That is why Detroit is so far gone that it will never come back and to those of you that think that it will, I say, go for a 2 hour ride in and around the city. Their is only about 2 or 3 decent areas. The rest is boarded up and falling apart homes.
Ms Lollipop wants to know what the 1M is for? How about to pay for the raises he gave all of his “loyal” (read leeches off of the city payroll) appointees. Ol’ Ella had her resignation in within minutes of Kwame’s guilty plea. (I’m sure she had nothing to hide !!) Ms Lollipop, the 1M will be used to pay for the “retirement” of all of the fleeing rats!
as a detroiter, that he will rise again. the city really feels like he was ambushed by the media, and hasn’t had the opportunity to correct his mistakes. while others believe that he got what he deserves, we are a forgiving people. and i believe that the city wants him as a young black mayor to succeed, and will give him the chance to redeem himself. we are a very forgiving people, which may work out for HIS benefit…but who knows for the city’s benefit
and furthermore, i frankly don’t appreciate people that have never been to detroit or voted or lived in detroit to keep commenting. it’s just something for you all to talk about today, and tomorrow it will be forgotten about. you have no idea what good he’s done for our city, and why we liked him as a mayor in the first place. just because it’s been in the media, doesn’t mean you know everything about what’s been going on either. that’s what’s wrong with our society…you feel entitled to talk about stuff you know nothing about or have any control over. go sit down somewhere, and make a change in your community or something
For the sake of the City of Detroit I hope that his rise does not include ever running for public office again. He was a terrible Mayor and he used the city of Detroit’s money to live a rock star life style while laying of police offices and city workers. He set a very bad example for his children and the children of Detroit. I hope that he never returns to public office.

Well I am from the city of Detroit, and I must say that alot of us love our mayor and are sorry for what happened to him… although the matter of him cheating on his wife did happen four years ago, he wasn’t justified in what he did. lying is wrong and Michigan goverment doesn’t care who you are if you lie under oath then they will get you. and the got him… however, he is the best mayor that we have because he has done so much for this city he is the one responsible for the rebirth of the city, superbowl, democratic nomonie convention, HardRock Cafe, Ice skating ring and a host of other things, before he got in office, downtown detroit was full of bums and curption,so he has done a great deal for us, and i am satisfyed with what he has done for he city. And when he run for office again, and he will because he loves the heck out of his city, I WILL PUT HIM BACK IN OFFICE, i’m not stupid for that because i love what he has done, building ramps on the street so that the elderly can walk or wheel their wheel chairs up and down the ramp with easy. AND FUTHERMORE THE MILLION DOLLARS WILL COME FROM HIS PENSION, BECAUSE HE WAS THE YOUNGEST HOUSE SPEAKER FOR THE STATE OF MICHIGAN BEFORE HE BECAME MAYOR.
I have watched this mayhem from afar and it is amazing that some of you diehard Mayor Fans to say he loves Detroit so much; however, he refused to step down and allow the city to move on so that normal business can continue on and all the negative press could stop. Now guess who is paying the cost for all this….the good ol’ citizens of Detroit.
Power got to the man but it is a blessing to him that he has finally admitted guilt to some of the charges and is reaping the consequences (he is getting off easy). He is far from humble by indicating that he will rise again.
Prayers are for the citizens of Detroit to receive a replacement Mayor who knowledge, skills and abilities to manage the city far exceeds any of his/her charisma, fast talk and self-indulgement.
The ex-mayor got off lightly. I now that he has a lengthy criminal record I hope by the time he is finished he is sentenced as a habitual criminal.
WHAT UP PEOPLE??? I want to say this real quick. Regardless of the “BIG HOMIE” being black, a lot of his problems didn’t come because of racism. A lot of his issues came because of his own infidelities. Come now!!! People wake up and stop trying to blame the white man for everything that happens to us. 1st of all, if you are in a top position, you already know you are being highly scruntinized. The hood life mentality need to be left alone. When you become a man or woman of such stature, it’s time to uplift those who want to look forward to such a position or future. It’s time to live healthy and do what’s right for all us black folk, not try and be in the public as a so called ICON, but live in the dark and try and do dirt that you don’t think will come back to you. It’s like one of the great parables of the bible; “You can’t serve two master!!!” It has to be one or the other. It’s also like one of the greatest sayings that we all were scolded on as children; “just because EJ want to jump off the cliff, does that mean we suppose to do the same???” Meaning, if a white man get away with being an infidel, does that mean we have to try the same and expect to get away with it??? We know the issues that follow us, why not continue to rise from those issues and be steadfast? We continue to get in our own way, because we condone all this madness and accept it as if it’s the actual face of Black Amercia. I’m sorry, I don’t believe in that and I most definitely don’t stand for it. If it’s wrong, call it, don’t accept it as if it’s something we should be happy or proud of dealing with. IT IS NOT A BADGE OF HONOR!!! This is/was my hometown MAYOR… Detroit is home to alot of my black people. Are We Gonna Give This City Back To The White Folks Because We Have Those Who Can’t Get Right??? I think not, we need to keep it a centralized area for black wealth and black folk coming up. Show these MOFO’s that we can be about power, wealth and our family values… BLACK AMERICA, STAND UP FOR WHAT’S RIGHT!!! GET RID OF THE IGNORANCE & DEAL WITH THE REAL. WE OWE IT TO OURSELVES TO BE REAL WITH ONE ANOTHER AND UPLIFT OUR FAMILIES… GOD be with us all… Oh Yeah, DON”T 4GET TO REGISTER TO VOTE EITHER! OUR VOICE WILL BE GOLDEN IN THIS ELECTION!!!! PEACE
I have never seen such disappointing, unintelligent, warped views on a person in my life. Kwame wanted to be mayor for the prestige that CAN come along with it. He exploited this to the fullest with his $1500.00 suits, ridiculous amount of security, his countless over-priced vehicles ect…THE CITY OF DETROIT IS BROKE PEOPLE! He connects with disenfranchised misguided younger blacks because they both are guided by what APPEARS to be success. Kwame tried to be the Suge Knight type. I like how he was equated to Coleman Young. Coleman Young was trash and destroyed Detroit. Dennis Archers family was involved with the Italian mafia. Now Kwame will go down as another loser for Detroit. Detroit is at the bottom of the barrel in comparison to all other cities in the US. He burried the word NI$$ER and than goes on to use it in an attempt to distract the public. Playing the race card was hilarious. The cops he fired were black, the city council who asked to have him removed is 95% black, Tamara Green is black, the women he cheated with were black, the city of Detroit is primarily black and his approval rating in the city is horrible. So cleary its ‘The Man” holding him down. He was voted in by blacks, thrown out by blacks, the guy who is responsible for it is Kwame Kilpatrick, and last I knew he was black. Don’t lose focus of whats at hand. He plead guilty cause he f*#ked up bad and tried burning anyone he could but himself avoiding conviction. This isn’t a Christian. This is a guy who wants the perks of being a christian while not being one…precisely the same thing he did as mayor.
Yo…. laughable mayor… What up (head nod)? Though I haven’t truly followed “The Man” and all his “sinful work”, but all that you said in the previous email, is this hardcore facts? If so, point me into the direction of finding this info. Not trying to ridicule you of what you are saying, I’m out of the loop with a lot of this stuff. Hell, I’m in Iraq and I have enough BS that I’m dealing with this way. Are you from the “D”? Bruh (you are a brotha right?), though this is like home to me (originally from Flint), I voiced my comments because I’m tired of so many of my people blaming the white man system on all of our problems. Homie knew what he was doing, let alone, most people who come into office know that they are still working off or with the projects that the previous mayors may have put into rotation. So, the glory hog statement would frame him quite right. If that’s what he actually did. All I know is Detroit, Flint, Saginaw is being hit hard with job and economic struggles. We don’t need another mayor who is concerned about what he can do for self.
Something tells me they aren’t letting me respond T. Made 2 posts in response.
first of all isn’t it funny that evertime a black person screws up they have to play the racial card!!!!!
he screwed up and must pay , no racial issue at all
he said that he will rise again isn’t that what the south said after the war??\
admit it ex mayor of detroit , you are finished with politics, no one wants a ex felon in office, you can’t change that you no longer have any power, your are just another joe-blow
good bye
wow BET…be nice if you would give me a response at my e-mail as to why you didn’t post my response to T. Covington. Anywho…I hope you get back home soon T. Best wishes and prayers to ya.
To Laughable Mayor, much respect you deserve. After your comment on the black issue we can just shut the comment board down. After that nothing else needs to be said.
