L’Oréal Loses Discrimination Case

June 26th, 2009

French cosmetics giant L’Oréal discriminated against Blacks, Asians and Arab women by telling its beauty products arm to keep the sales and promotion team all White, the French high court ruled this week.  L’Oréal didn’t want Garnier to allow women of color to sell its Fructis shampoo. The temp agency, Adecco, whose Districom division hired the hostesses, was also found guilty of racial discrimination. L’Oréal expressed “disappointment” over the judgment, which ends three years of legal wrangling over the discrimination claims. Samuel Thomas, the vice-chairman of SOS Racisme, the anti-racist campaign group, described the ruling as a “very great victory.” The court was told that a Disticom executive had sent a fax in 2000 saying that Garnier’s hostesses should be aged 18 to 22, wear size 38 to 42 clothes and be “BBR”.

Yeah!!! I have been in the beauty industry for years and it was sad to see the practices right in front of your face while sitting in a board room meeting but it irritated me more when we purchased the product..I walked away from that position.

I live in Montreal where L’Oreal is obviously pretty big, and I have never noticed any Black people (peopele of Color) even getting off the bus to go there either.

I have never supported Loreal because I think you only pay the celebrities, their stuff is way too expensive. Thanks for this info, it gives me another reason not to support them.

Juanita Said on

It does not suprise me. White women always been put on a pedal stool. Companies like Loreal should be dismantled from bottom up. If they cant reconize beauty come in different colors and sizes, then No one should be supporting them.-I won’t!

Life is not fair. Do not blame L’Oreal make yourself accountable for where your spend your hard earned dollars. L’Oreal is the same company that has purchased pretty much of the once owned minority hair care industry. Wake up people nothing comes to a sleeper but a dream or nightmare.
