“Mama Africa” Passes Away at 76
November 11th, 2008
“Mama Africa” passes away at 76. One of Africa’s greatest music legends ever is dead after collapsing on stage during a performance in Italy this past weekend. Miriam Makeba suffered a heart attack early Monday following the late Sunday show. Makeba became known throughout the world for her songs in protest of South African apartheid. “Her haunting melodies gave voice to the pain of exile and dislocation which she felt for 31 long years,” former South African president Nelson Mandela said in a statement. “At the same time, her music inspired a powerful sense of hope in all of us.” Makeba was the first African woman to win a Grammy. She starred in 1959’s anti-apartheid documentary “Come Back, Africa” and, much later, made a guest appearance on “The Cosby Show.” Makeba was 76. Read more here.

Depressed over the fact that she won’t see her Navy-officer father for another three months, Olivia deliberately gets lost in hopes of persuading him to stay. In the end, it is Ms. Makeba who locates Olivia and dispense a few heartfelt words of wisdom. This episode marks the final appearance of former series regular Joseph C. Phillips, in the role of Olivia’s father Martin. ~ Hal Erickson,
Miriam Makeba was and still is and will always be a true legend in her own right to me, she was not an African legend or singer, she was simply a legend and singer. Her voice ,her generosity….. incredible and how witty she was made her my mother’s and i favorite singers of all time, i still remember as a child watching her sing at Paul Simon’s concert. I was around six years old. she was so beautiful , she always reminded me of my grandmother. It never took long to see in her a beautiful, classic and elegant woman and it is with a broken heart and great sadness that i did not get the chance to hear her voice live in Montreal but what can i say …. it wasn’t meant to be…….
ATRUE LEGEND
Thank you Mama for all the joy that you brought to us all. You will be highly missed, and shall remain forever in our hearts. May your soul rest in peace.
If you have ever saw Sarafina she played Sarafina’s mom….GREAT MOVIE TOO…Sorry to see her go though…I will have her in my prayers and thoughts. Also praying for her family as well.
May Mama Africa rest in peace. I do remember watching an episode of The Cosby Show and saw her appearance. She was a beautiful woman and a trademark for all African-American Women. May her music be heard all over the Heavens. God Bless you and your family.

GOD BLESS YOU MAMA AFRICA, & may GOD ALMIGHTY welcome you into HEAVEN with loving arms, & reunite you with the rest of our African ancestors. Miriam Makeba is in HEAVEN with other strong, beautiful BLACK WOMEN, i.e. Betty Shabazz, Coretta Scott King, Harriet Tubman, Fanie Lou Hamer, Shirley Chislohm, Barbara Jordan, Cleopatra, Nefertitti, Nefatari, my mother Viviane Lee Brown, Ida B. Wells Barnett, Sojourner Truth, Ester Rolle, Madge Sinclair, & many, many, many, many more. GOD BLESS ALL OF YOU.
Thank you CREATOR for giving us everything we need exactly when we need it. We needed Mother Miriam and whne whe needed rest, you have given it to her. She watcheds now from a position of guardianship. Help those of us who remain, continue in the work she lived. We pray that the “worldwide” family , will find peace in knowing she is at peace and rest. She lived to witness not only the collapse of aparthied in her home country, the election of an African President in her country (after centuries of rule by others), but also the election of the first African American President of the United States. Mother you will be missed, you were and are loved. Be at Peace and rest well, until we meet again.

MAY, GOD WELCOME OUR MAMA AFRICA IN HIS LOVING ARMS. AND MAY GOD CONTINUE TO BLESS MAMA AFRICA FAMILY AND DEAR FRIENDS.
I WAS JUST A LITTLE CHILD WHEN MY SIBLINGS INTRODUCED ME TO THE BEAUTIFUL SOULFUL VOICE OF MAMA AFRICA. THIS WAS WAY BACK IN THE SIXTIES. I AM STILL A LOYAL FAN, AND I KEPT THE TRADITION BY INTRODUCING MY SON, NEPHEWS AND NEICES TO MAMA AFRICA, AND THEY ARE EQUAL LOYAL FANS.
LOVE YOU MAMA AFRICA AND THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR BEAUTIFUL GIFT WITH ME AND MY FAMILY. YOU WILL BE MISSED
