A man who was killed in a shootout with Atlanta Police in July had 19 bullet holes in his chest and back, 12 in his legs, six in his arms and one each in his neck and butt, an autopsy report obtained by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution shows. The family of the victim, Montellis Clark, has claimed that an officer stood over Clark and blasted away. Although the 39 bullet wounds would seem to suggest excessive force, they did not necessarily confirm that particular account, reported the newspaper, which obtained the autopsy report through an Open Records Act request. Dr. Karen Sullivan of the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office, who performed the autopsy July 16 – the day after the shooting – said that some wounds were likely caused by the same bullets that passed through one side and out another. Police say that Clark fired the first shots, firing at police outside an Atlanta home after being told to pull his hands out of his pockets. Two officers, Clarence Tosh and Gregory Dubose shot back, hitting his 25-year-old brother in the back. Clark’s mother, Melissa Clark, witnessed the incident but was not wounded. Interviewed by the Constitution-Journal, Melissa Clark said, “It didn’t take that many shots. Once he was shot, that was enough.” She told the paper that she did not want to know how many times her son was shot.

Unclejoe, I agree with you that Tweety got it right. Why is it when we see someone black do something that’s worth condemning, we shy away from it and claim racism or injustice? This drastically diminishes our credibility when we have legitimate issues of racism and injustice to address. Every police shooting isn’t racially motivated. Many times its Black or Latino officers involved. If we want to be respected as we enter into a national dialogue on race, we must be clear on when it occurs, otherwise, how do we expect those who are perpetuating it to know when they’re doing it?
Its tragic for any parent to lose their child and especially under these circumstances and my heart goes out to his family, but he’s not a victim here. Yeah, 39 bullets may be overkill (no pun intended), but if you shoot at the police, you don’t get to then tell the police how many times they can fire back at you. Harsh but true.

Okay, the victim shot first….but remember when a crazy man jumped th fence of the White House and threatened the president? Well the police shot that man – who was white – in the leg. ONCE. His crazy ass went to the hospital.

THIS IS ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF POLICE BRUTALITY, IT ONLY TAKES ONE, MAYBE TWO SHOTS TO DISABLE A SUSPECT. HOW DEVASTATING FOR A MOTHER TO HAVE TO WITNESS HER CHILD GUNNED DOWN LIKE AN ANIMAL. LETS SEE WHAT THE JUSTICE SYSTEM WILL SAY ABOUT THIS: OH, WE ALREADY KNOW: “JUSTIFIABLE HOMICIDE” , AS ALWAYS…..

DUMBASS Said on

COME ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THE SHOOTING IS JUSTAFIABLE!
WHAT DO YOU WANT THE POLICE TO SHOOT BACK,,,AND SHOOT HIM IN THE HAND,,, LIKE SOME OLD WESTERN?
FIRST OF ALL THE GUY ( I DOUBT) WAS WALKING AROUND WITH A GUN
AND PERMIT,,,,,,2ND HE SHOT FIRST AT THE POLICE,,,,
WHAT NO ONE UNDERSTANDS GET ON THE GROUND?
EVEN IF YOU DID NOT DO ANYTHING WRONG,,,THE RIGHT THING TO
DO IS TO COMPLY WITH WHAT THE POLICE,,,WHY MAKE THINGS WORSE? HEY FOR ALL WHO DON’T KNOW,,WITHOUT A PERMIT
WALKING AROUND WITH A HANDGUN IS AGAINST THE LAW IN MOST STATES,,,,AND IF YOU ARE GOING TO SHOOT,,,,,,YOU SHOOT TO KILL
END OF STORY,,,IF YOUR MOVING AROUND ON THE GROUND,,,
YOUR NOT DEAD! I DON’T THINK THE ISSUE IS THAT HE WAS SHOT SO MANY TIMES, HOW MANY TIMES DID HE SHOOT HIS GUN?
HE SHOULD NOT HAVE HAD ONE!
I THINK IT IS ABOUT COPS SHOOTING ANOTHER BLACK GUY!

Now wut tweety said is understandable. I have many friends who work in law enforcemnt and the devastation wld be the same if I lost my brother from being shot by the police or if a lost a brother being shot by a criminal. However wit factoring in common sense it dsnt take that many shots 2 bring someone down. That is excessive and as an officer better judgemnt needs to be exercised. Even if he did shoot first upon realizing that the man was down and able to be securely detained then they should have stopped. Now his mother is having to grieve knowin that she watched her child die. May god be with her and the family as well as the brother who took a bullet.

HEY I HAVE AN IDEA???????? GIVE THE POLICE WATERBALLONS!
THEN WHEN SOME THUG IS FIRING A 9MM OR .45 HE DOES NOT GET HURT,,,,,I FORGOT THIS IS AMERICA WE HAVE TO KEEP CRIMINALS

As I read the comments posted with regard to this topic, I’m saddened by how naive some of them are…not that it surprises me. I am a police officer and have been for some time, there have been times where I have almost had to shoot someone myself, and from experience that is never a good feeling no matter what color the person is. When an officer shoots a suspect their lives are forever changed. The overwhelming majority of officers never have to use their weapons, but the time one of us does, there is this extreme public outcry.

Do I believe all officers have the public good at heart…absolutely not! Do I believe that there are times when a persons own actions put them in danger of being harmed or even killed by police…absolutely YES! My heart also goes out to this man’s mother, I cannot imagine what she must have experienced having to witness something like that, but this is an accountability issue. I’m not sure what he was doing to bring police attention to himself, I’m not sure why he had a gun on him, and I definately don’t know what made him think that he would not be shot dead for shooting at police officers. CAN I GET A SHOW OF HANDS FROM ALL WHO BELIEVE THIS WAS A GOOD MOVE ON HIS PART???

Just in case anyone has a problem with what I’m saying, let me just say that you will never get it because your job does not put you in harms way every single second of your shift like mine and every other police officers does. Experience and training demands that if you see a suspect with a weapon, and especially if that suspect fires that weapon at you, you use whatever force necessary to eliminate the threat. That does not mean ONE officer will shoot at him…that means every officer who has his weapon pointed at him will more than likely shoot at him in order to prevent him from endangering anyone…this includes police officers and innocent bystanders who do not deserve to be harmed because this person made an ignorant decision.

I am really upset that they shot him up like that….But the fact is…he fired first. They should have shot him in the leg or something….But on a real…If I was a police and a criminal shot at me I would make sure I get him in the head.

I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news but, every police shooting is not racially motivated!! Let’s be real here. If it’s wrong, let’s all say it’s wrong. If it’s right, let’s not call it racism. I’m black and I get sick and tired of everyone playing the race card. This was no choirboy!!! I’m not saying he deserved to die. I am saying you don’t know what was going on at the time. I know if someone shoots at me, they must be shooting to kill. You don’t shoot at someone, especially an armed police officer, for the fun of it. Maybe it was excessive. If you have 7 or 8 police officers, they’re not going to call the shot like they’re playing volleyball or something. The moment he decided to pull that trigger, it became a fight for survival. They had to risk killing a man who first shot at them, or having someone tell their families they died in the line of duty. I don’t think so. It’s horrible for any parent to lose their child and unimaginable to watch it, but her son initiated this cycle by shooting at the police officers. Do you honestly think they went there to shoot the unarmed brother. That, I do believe, was an accident, triggered by the ignorant actions of his brother. He’s dead. His family won’t see the negative things he did. People always remember the good in a person when they’re gone. I’m not for violence as a first resort but these officers did what they had to do. Let’s stop playing games and tell it like it is. He was wrong and everything after he fired upon the police officers was his own fault. I still offer my prayers to all the families involved.

with all the senseless killing that our young Black men are doing to each other, and then when one fires first and get killed, you want to be on his side, he should of had fear for his own life, for a fool that think that he can shoot at a person with a gun and not think that he can get shot, is more than dumb, so be grateful that out of the 40 bullets that were exchanged, no one else died

Hello, I would like to say my condolences go out to the mother. I would like to say that is over kill. I feel that they should lose their jobs. Its not rite and I know like everybody else knows that nothing is going to happen to those cops who killed that boy. The violence needs to stop when it comes down to the law protecting you but their are not protecting anyone. They are breaking the law themselves. Its not fair and its not rite for his mother to have to go through this situation. One shot ok, maybe he would have lived. But 39 shots thats just ridiculious. They don’t need to be put on suspension that they need to lose their jobs, and sit back and think how they took someone life and for what reason, please that question

Desgirl19 Said on

When you have a situation like this, the police should shoot to disarm and not shoot to kill, I am sorry But if someone shoots at 1 person 39 times they mean to kill that person. This seems to be an ongoing issue with these cops, I dont think that it is racially motivated but it is just a cop thing, the law is on their side regardless. I think that police officers should be punished for using excessive force such as this, you cannot tell me that you will allow cops to shoot at and individual 39 or 50 times and not find that willful and down right heartless. It only takes one good shot to disarm a person, not 50, 60, or 70. If laws are not changed soon this wont be the last, more police killings will take place and the amt of bullets used will only be more.

It is truly sad what happened and my heart and prayers go out to the family. You have to remember that their is a law that says that a police officer is suppose to disable them not kill them so what they did was truly wrong. But we also have to look at what the young man did and that is shoot at the officers first. Now the question is was the police wrong? the answer is simple Yes! Why because it say to dis arm the supect and he was holding anybody. So they were wrong.

if u honestly think Obama getting in office is gona change that ur sadly mistaken. Obviously the poor guy shouldnt of been shot even 20times, but EVERY1 knows in this world u shoot at cops they have the right to shoot back and end ur life. You take 5cops who shoot a total of 5 bullets each thats 25shots already, it happens to white people who shoot at cops too. Dont turn it into another black man dead and america dont care cuz we obviously do care, u just need to really asset the situation b4 running towards racism n get 2 the real problem or else its gona keep happening

Ms.Diana, I mean no disrespect. Ur son has not been incarcerated 18 yrs for jaywalking. I know there are some innocent people in jail but alot of them belong there. If Satan has this man, he had him before he was gunned down. Maybe it was Satan that made him shoot at someone first. Do you honestly believe he was trying to disarm or disable the police officers?? Seriously. He was shooting to kill!!!! You don’t shoot at police officers unless you have a death wish. I’m not trying to make light of this situation at all. I have four children who I love dearly. Sometimes its our children that are causing our pain. In this case, I feel he is the cause of his family’s pain. I’m going to pray for him and all of the families involved. God is good and he hears our cries. To his mother and everyone: this battle is not yours. Give it to GOD and he’ll fight it for you.Let go and let GOD!!!!!
