Man Killed By Atlanta Police Had 39 Bullet Holes
September 4th, 2008Montellis Clark’s mother didn’t want to know how many time he was shot

A man who was killed in a shootout with Atlanta Police in July had 19 bullet holes in his chest and back, 12 in his legs, six in his arms and one each in his neck and butt, an autopsy report obtained by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution shows. The family of the victim, Montellis Clark, has claimed that an officer stood over Clark and blasted away. Although the 39 bullet wounds would seem to suggest excessive force, they did not necessarily confirm that particular account, reported the newspaper, which obtained the autopsy report through an Open Records Act request. Dr. Karen Sullivan of the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office, who performed the autopsy July 16 – the day after the shooting – said that some wounds were likely caused by the same bullets that passed through one side and out another. Police say that Clark fired the first shots, firing at police outside an Atlanta home after being told to pull his hands out of his pockets. Two officers, Clarence Tosh and Gregory Dubose shot back, hitting his 25-year-old brother in the back. Clark’s mother, Melissa Clark, witnessed the incident but was not wounded. Interviewed by the Constitution-Journal, Melissa Clark said, “It didn’t take that many shots. Once he was shot, that was enough.” She told the paper that she did not want to know how many times her son was shot.

THIS MESSAGE IS FOR TWEETY…. I’M SURE YOU LOVE YOUR RELATIVES JUST AS HIS MOTHER ( FAMILY ) LOVED HIM. THE POINT HERE IS THAT IT DOES NOT TAKE 39 (19) SHOTS TO GAIN CONTROL OVER ONE HUMAN BEING. NOW IT SEEMS TO ME LIKE THEY LOOKED @ HIM AS AN ANIMAL. NOW I AM A COUNTRY GIRL FROM THE HEART OF ALABAMA AND MIGHT I ADD ALSO FROM A HUNTING FAMILY AND THE LAST TIME I CHECKED I ONLY TAKES ONE CLEAR SHOT TO TAKE OUT ANY TARGET(2@ THE MOST). SO YOU TELL ME, ARE YOU JUSTIFYING WHAT THEY HAVE DONE? IF SO, YOU NEED A REALITY CHECK.
YALL COMMENTIN ON BET.COM…..DATS COOL BUT WHEN R WE GONNA ACTUALLY STAND UP AN BE ACCOUNTED FOR?…..WHEN ITS OUR FAMILY GRIEVING OVER ONE OF US BEING SHOT 100 TIMES BECAUSE THE POLICE “THOUGHT” WE HAD A GUN……THIS IS CRAZY WHEN YALL READY TO SPEAK OUT HIT ME UP
To the mother who lost her son may he rest in peace. There are a lot of good cops & there a lot bad ones too. The point here is he shot at the cops first. Our community has so much distrust & hostility towards the police that even our own who become cops feel the wrath. Remember the two officers that got ambushed in Atlanta. They both were black officers, family men that lost there lives. Yea we’re stereotyped, but this thug life, gangster mentality has put a lot of heat on us & the sad part is that we’re going to hear more stories like this. We got to change the way people see us & it starts with us.
my heart go out to the family you are in my prays god bless you and keep you close to his heart..
Now this dont make no sense and i hope the police are in jail and not behind a desk doing work , what was the police thinking of shooting him tht many time he was target pratice they need to pay he mother for the suffering she has indered cause just feel her pain and may god be with her and famiy in there time of need.
u no wat tweety and unclejoe a person dosnt have 2 b shot 39 times 4 someone 2 get reveng u dumbA$$
Bloviated “tiny-tee:”
“Now this dont make no sense ”
Nice. Your grammar instills within me an eerie compulsion to believe.
“However, so many of these comments relate the situation to the deceased being black, how do you know the officers are not black as well?”
It doesn’t matter, Drea_83; it’s always the white man’s fault.
Always.
That was real trifalent how people are talking about erelevant things on this page, that is totally disrespect foll. But other than that my heart go’s out to his family and his mother. Sorry to hear and just try to stay strong.

WTH…..Nah that dont make no sense at all……..
Let’s hope that investigations (please note that I use the plural of investigation) will wrap this tragic matter, punish those guilty of excessive force.
But let’s stop ranting about blacks being hunted by whites. Some of the most dangerous cops are black and use their racial status as free pass to be quite vicious.
A lot of white cops are afraid of judicial retributions when dealing with blacks.
Bad cops are bad cops, regardless of color.
I pray for her and her family this is sad
@dumbass,
you have the correct login. if you have pigs in your family, i feel sorry for you. not all po po are bad just about 95% of them.
39 times is excessive. that is the police. they are paid to hunt and kill young black males when the opportunity presents itself. with that said, WE MUST BY ALL ACCOUNTS AVOID THE POLICE IF POSSIBLE.
it’s the media. we never get the real side of the story. WE NEVER HAVE. how many times have unarmend black males been shot by the police within the past three years?!!? its a reoccuring cycle. it will continue as long as the police and the media can spin all events.
if he shot first, then they had the right to take him dowm. but dude is not the terminator, it does not take 39 shots to take anyone out.
First I would like to say I feel so sorry for the clark mother to have to witness the death of her son. It makes me angry that police can get away with such a brutal crime. To shoot a man 39 times is ridiculous and a outright crime that should not be consider justified. One shot could have disarmed him but to kill a man infront of his mother and family is not justice but murder. I am from the deep south and this is something we see everyday but if we as black people would stand together a crime like this by the police would not go on without them be proscecuted and sent to prison.
My heart goes out to Ms. Clark on the loss of her son, however I must say that this is also a case where “citizens” have no regards for human life.
What would make the victim allegedly take out a gun and start firing at cops? As an African American women who is soooooo tired of hearing about my brothers being shot down, I’m also tired of hearing about unnecessary deaths due to some of these brothers trying to show that they are hard or tough. C’mon guys, at some point we have to start taking responsibility for our own actions.
I am constantly telling my children that they HAVE to be prepared for the consequences that may come if they decided to do something illegal. I always tell them, “if you are ever in a situation where you are thinking about committing a crime (not saying that’s what happened with Mr. Clark’s situation) but you have to think one step further. Don’t just think about how things will be if you get away with the crime, go one step further and think about how things will be if you don’t.”
We have to start teaching our youth that there WILL BE actions and reactions to EVERYTHING you do, be it good or bad.
Again, I am sad about the loss of yet again, another brother, however we must start teaching our children while they are young that they will eventually have to stand up and take responsibility for their actions and sometimes if they are not willing to do so, it could lead to things such as this.
YOU ALL KNOW WHAT REALLY GOES ON, THEY HAVE BEEN KILLING US FOR EVER, THEY TRADED THERE WHITE HOODS FOR BLUE UNIFORMS, WAKE UP BLACK AMERICA THIS S##T DID’NT JUST START.
FOR THE MOTHER OF THE YOUNG MAN THAT WAS SHOT, I FEEL FOR YOU, I AM A MOTHER AND HAVE TWO BOYS AND I FEAR FOR THEIR LIVES EVERYDAY, AND NOT JUST FROM THE POLICE BUT FROM OTHER YOUNG BLACK MEN AS THEMSELVES. MAY GOD BE WITH YOU AT ALL TIMES.
This is sad, my heart and prayers go out to the family. I think the police need policing.
damn this is messed up…to me it seems like the police be over doin they power of what they have..why would you shoot someone that many times even if they are in the wrong?? that was messed up for real..
Thank you Gabby for you statement….the young man could have been a bad person and yes he could have had a gun and fired the first shot…but where it becomes an act of hatred, bad judgement and racism is shooting him 39 times. I am sure he was dead with the first five shots and that is being very lenient. How do you stand over someone who has alread been shot and laying helpless and still fire bullets into him. That is hate!!! So for the police officer on here trying to justify it and for tweety and who agrees with her, lets take a moment and really think about the situation.
