Mandela Removed From U.S. Terrorist List

The 90-year-old ex-president of South Africa has been unwelcome for many years

Following a national outcry which even included comments of outrage from Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, the United States government will finally remove former South African President Nelson Mandela’s from a U.S. terrorism watch list. The international icon and Nobel Peace Prize winner’s treatment by the U.S. government urged lawmakers to introduce a bill to take him off the list. President Bush signed the bill Tuesday. “He had no place on our government’s terror watch list, and I’m pleased to see this bill finally become law,” said Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry. Mandela, the former head of the African National Congress, was the jailed for 24 years during the heyday of apartheid, the South African regime’s longtime system of racial separation that was brutally enforced by the White minority government for 46 years. South African dubbed the apartheid-fighting ANC a terrorist group. Thus ANC members were denied U.S. visas, without special permission. Mandela was released from prison in 1990 and, four years later, apartheid officially crumbled, but the leader’s name remained on the U.S. terrorist watch list. Under the new bill, both the State Department and Homeland Security Department have the power to dissolve the restrictions against Mandela and fellow ANC members. “What it will do is make sure that there aren’t any extra hoops for either a distinguished individual, like former President Mandela, or other members of the African National Congress to get a U.S. visa,” State Department spokesman Tom Casey said.

Lisa, that is not entirely true. South Africa is not going to dogs. What dogs are u talking about? What makes you say that. Support your statement please. I live in South Africa. My country is facing challanges just like any country in the world, high food prices, high price of fuel, unemployment, crime etc, just like Zimbwabwe is also facing its challanges… But to say South Africa is going to the dogs, that is a bit much.

I was shocked to my pants to learn that several years after he ensured the demise of apartheid in his home country of South Africa, the name of the world’s number one citizen, Nelson Mandela was still on the terrorist list of the United States. This is more than preposterous if you ask me. A man who spent 27 of his active years behind bars in the fight for freedom for his people deserves much more than to be tagged a terrorist in the first place. How many people living today can do that? The good thing however is that his name has been finally deleted from American terrorist list, even though belatedly. The American govt i think owes him an apology for such act. May God continue to bless and spare MANDELA’S life for some more years, AMEN!

Even though I don’t agree with South Africa placing Nelson Mandela on a “terrorist list”, I do understand their crazy logic, because Mr. Mandela was a threat to their system of apartheid. What I don’t understand and no logic that I can summons allows me to comprehend is how the US aligned itself with the South African government and saw anyone who fought against the racist political system as an enemy of the US?? That would mean that they supported the policies of that country. I’m almost certain that the US State Department will say that the ANC used violence and that’s why they were placed on the list. Well, if they call defending themselves “violence”, then what do they call the atrocities and crimes against humanity that their government perpetrated against the innocent people of South Africa? My question is why wasn’t South African government officials on that list? I guess when you think about it, there really hasn’t been much difference in those that ruled in South Africa and those that have run this nation.

I just remember now, America is the world police and they can do whatever they feel like to anyone and no one should say anything about it.

why is it that a Man like this that has suffered so unfairly in order to right a wrong allowed to stay on a list like this for years without justice being served ? The US has had ample time to just this unjust and yet nothing has been done until now. why?? must not have been any money involved for them like it was in going over to Iraq, once again claiming to have justifiable cause. I quess Africa is not worth the cause !!!
